1000 Pyramids

IMG_2949

Over the weekend, I started a quilt for my son Ahren, who lives in Ireland.  He has been wanting a new quilt, and discovered a collection of fabrics in colors he loves:  amber and charcoal.  He was inspired by this photo:

Amber-grey-2

The fabrics in the quilt photographed lighter than the impression they make in person.  I think the Bee Inspired fabric designed by Deb Strain is a really good match for Ahren's vision.  He discovered the fabric line and purchased a fat quarter bundle, plus additional yardage, which he had sent to me.  I cannot tell you how much fun it is to discuss fabrics with my son!

The photo below might be a better representation of the colors.  It also shows how much I accomplished on Saturday and Sunday.  Eight rows, woohoo!

The quilt will have 18 rows of 36 triangles.  648 total pieces.  I am aiming for a finished quilt of about 70 inches.  I guess triangle quilts like this don't typically have borders, but I suppose I could flaunt tradition and put one on and make it bigger.

It is kind of fiddly work, as the pieces for each new row needs to be laid out below the row above it, to reduce the chance of having like fabrics next to each other.  I will tell you tomorrow about the fabrics I am using and the cool triangle ruler I purchased for cutting the shapes.

  4. I love the photograph and the fabrics you are using are a perfect match. You can totlly use a border perhaps a light smallinner border and then a darker wider one for the outside.

  7. The first quilt I ever made was a thousand pyramid quilt. I saw a picture of one in a magazine and I was hooked. The quilt did have a border on it so I put a border on mine. The quilt was also made with scraps, but I knew nothing about quiltmaking so I would just buy 1/8 yard pieces of fabric to hand cut with a scissors – no rotary cutters back in the mid-70’s! The colors you are using a fabulous and they are going make a stunning quilt!

  19. this is a perfect rendition of that photo. When I random piece, I just make sure its not the same as the next one. Then it’s the challenge of putting the rows together. This is fabulous.

  28. What more can I say but stunning! I am travelling for work to that tiny island at the bottom of Australia – Tasmania. Have managed to pop into a coupke of quilt shops along the way, brought some cute fabric to make a couple of baby boy quilts.
