How cute is this Spooky and Sweet Halloween project? Fat Quarter Shop offers it as a free pattern and also has YouTube tutorials on how to make it. I did make some modifications to their pattern. Mainly, I added rounded off eyes and rosy cheeks, and used a couple of blocks from the panel that comes with the Hey Boo fabric collection for their "pumpkins". I also rounded off their heads for what I think is a cuter look. Oh, and added those vampire fangs! I didn't come up with these ideas myself, I saw them on @luv2quilt4u Instagram account and just figured out what she did to get this look.
I am thinking of using my project as the center medallion in the Halloween Memories/Moonlight quilt.
I'm not 100% sure if I can make it work because it is a weird size. I've ordered more of the pale pink background fabric to border the medallion and I will play with it to see if it will work. If it doesn't work as a center medallion, I will just use it as a Halloween wall hanging.
In other disappointing news, after a couple of days of medical testing, I have been diagnosed with macular degeneration. This condition runs in families, and my father also had it towards the end of his life. Right now it is just in my left eye, but there are signs of it potentially being an issue in the right as well at some point. This came on quite suddenly for me. At the beginning of August I noticed my vision was rather blurry. It quickly progressed over a couple of weeks, until the vision in my left eye was significantly affected.
Fortunately, I have the type of AMD that is treatable. I got my first injection last Friday. My retina specialist was hopeful that the progress of the disease can be slowed and that I may even experience some improvement in my sight. For now, that hasn't happened, but I am optimistic.
I can still read and sew, but it is a challenge at the moment!
The doctor urged me to share with family and friends that if one notices any change in their vision (blurriness, distortion, dulling of colors) to see an ophthalmologist immediately. He also recommends a macular vitamin supplement called Areds 2 which is available over the counter.
I am still adjusting to the news, but am determined to carry on as I have been.

Sorry to hear the diagnosis. Thank goodness it is treatable, but I’m sure it will take a while to unpack. Hold fast! Xox
I am determined that the adorable spooky and sweet has those Halloween memories blocks around it. I think you can do the math. Oh, I might have to pull mine out and succumb to the Spooky and Sweet fat quarters at last! Have a wonderful week.

For anyone who doesn’t know –
What is ophthalmologist vs optometrist?
“Optometrists examine, diagnose, and treat patients’ eyes. Ophthalmologists are eye doctors who perform medical and surgical treatments for eye conditions.“
I feel very strongly about having an Ophthalmologist as a family eye doctor and getting regular check ups.
My husband and one adult daughter and I (all with eye related issues) are seen once a year. My other two adult kids go every other year (lesser issues).
We too have macular degeneration on my husband’s genetic line. We have migraines on my line. We both have cataract potential. We wear glasses. Etc.
I am so sorry this has impacted you.
I have severe arthritis that started limiting my hands years ago. My advice is prioritize your sewing projects. Prioritize your stash. I passed on tools and fabric and projects to other quilters.
I only work on important things that I want to get done for myself or others. I have a long arm quilter and another lady who does my binding. My husband and one daughter help with pressing and turning.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I have had dry macular degeneration for a couple of years. Eye drops have kept it in check. I noticed some changes the last few months, but attributed them to my cataract, which at my last appointmen the doctor said was starting to change. I saw the doctor again on Wednesday and was referred to a retina specialist the next day. I now have wet macular degeneration and had my first injection to slow its progress. I have noticed some improvement already. I can read several of my favorite blogs again. Let’s hope our treatments do the job so we can continue quilting.

I’m sick for you about your eyes!!!!! I’m always afraid of this disease even though it hasn’t been a problem in my family. One thing my eye doctor told me was to always wear sunglasses when I’m outside. I’m glad to know your situation is treatable and I’m hoping the best for you.

May I join the others and say how sorry I am to hear about your eyes? Our eyesight is so precious. It sounds like you have an excellent opthalmologist. This getting older things isn’t for sissys! Sending hugs and prayers.
Your little spooky goblins are adorable. Fat Quarter Shop will be asking to use yours in their advertising!!😉

I’m so very sorry to hear about your diagnosis 😥 I am thankful for your retina specialist and will pray that your treatment is successful. I so agree with the above comment about prioritizing projects. It’s definitely hard to do but as we get older and encounter health issues, it helps us continue doing what we like when we can.
Love how you have modified the Spooky medallion to make it your own and your idea for using it with the other blocks to make a bigger quilt is such a great one!
Know your bloggers are holding you close and keep pressing on dear one!

I’m thankful that you saw your doctor as soon as you realized you had a problem. As Vicki stated, although there is definitely a place for optometrists, it’s imperative to see an ophthalmologist for medical concerns for eyes. My husband has had macular degeneration in both eyes for 8 years. He receives the injections regularly (one eye at a time) & is able to go four months between. Be sure your kids & Eva are aware of the ‘symptoms’ because it is absolutely genetic. Once you settle into the routine you’ll do well…promise. 💕

Oh, I am so sorry to hear the news about your vision. However, it is good news that this particular version of AMD is treatable. Good for you for going to your ophthalmologist early on, at first sign of issues. Too many people delay getting something checked. Your little ghost and vampire quilt figures are just too cute! I hope you are able to make it work in the quilt as you have planned.

So sorry to hear about your AMD. I was diagnosed with it about 2 years ago, although mine is dry, so I don’t get the shots. So far it hasn’t affected me too much. My father had it and I was on a medication that causes it, so I don’t know which caused mine. For now I just take the Areds vitamins and see my regular eye doctor once a year who tells me when I need to see the opthalmologist. So far I’ve only needed to see him twice because I haven’t had any changes. I’m just waiting for my cataracts to cause problems now. It’s awful getting old!

I’m sorry to hear about your macular degeneration. My grandma had it and she so loved to read. I’m glad yours is treatable and I hope you get some relief from the shots. Your Halloween cute is so darling!

I am so glad to hear that your condition is treatable. I pray that you have improvement in your eyesight. I hope you are able to combine the Spooky and Sweet Halloween project with the Halloween Memories. It will make such an adorable quilt. I will be sewing with my friends tomorrow and Spooky and Sweet is the project I will be working on.

I’m glad you are getting treatment now. I have the dry AMD so no injections. However, mine was discovered early as I had some strange unusual colored “floaters” and was sent from the opthy doc to the retina specialist. I’m doing the AREDS and, as I also have very dry eyes due to my fibromyalgia, I do eye drops several times a day. My AMD progressed some at this past check-up so now going to the retina clinic more often. No history of this in my family.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but glad it is treatable. Losing any sight is a scary thing. I must make an appointment with my eye doc-its been awhile!

thank goodness for science and doctors. I still find it hard to understand how many people have turned their backs on science.
I know that shot was painful but so glad it is available. I’ve taken Occuvite for 10 yrs to slow progression of cataracts.
I’m so ready to be done with this year.

I’m so sorry to hear this! I see a local chain for my eyeglasses but was sent to an ophthalmologist for a picture (like MRI)of the back of my eye. I will see them once a year to monitoring. Getting older is not for the faint of heart! You’ll be in my thoughts and hopes that your treatments are easy.

I also followed the Halloween project, but via Pat Sloan’s sewalong. I never did understand the “pumpkins” as you call them. Yes, they clearly look like pumpkins in your version; some called them “treat bags.” Are the white things at the tops of the handles supposed to be hands?
Anyway, I like your version lots more than most. Your color scheme is intriguing.

Your Spooky and Sweet wall hanging is adorable, I think the changes you made added to its cuteness! I think it would work as a center medallion, just a little creative math to get it to work out. Sorry to hear this diagnosis, scary for sure. So glad that there is an effective treatment for it. Thinking of you, take care. ♥️
