New Pressing Tool

New seam pressing tool
I wanted to share a new pressing tool that I got recently that has revolutionized my open-seam pressing game. This is called the 12" Wooly Pressing Bar, and so far, to me, it is worth the $30 price tag.

Inside of wooly pressing bar
This is the inside anatomy of the pressing bar. It is a curved piece of wood covered in wool that has been attached to a wooden base. The curved shape of it is perfect for pressing seams open. Honestly, it works so much better than pressing on a flat surface.

Pressing 12 inch block
12" is about the largest size block I typically make, and this pressing bar easily accommodates that size. Here I am pressing the 12" Designer Mystery 2012 Block 5. These longer seams have always been a challenge for me to press nicely, and this pressing bar makes it easy. My blocks turn out so flat.

Pressing smaller block
Here I am pressing a 7 1/2" block. Something about the curve of the bar makes the seam cooperate and open up and press nice and flat.

Flip and press top side
I like to flip it over and press the right side as well. See how flat and nice the seam lies?

DM 12 block 5
I love how my blocks are turning out.

I've been working on my little Vampire ghost for the Spooky and Sweet Halloween wall hanging. I've had some challenges trying to adapt the block the way I want it to look, but I'm getting there. Hope to show you my completed project in my next post. My plan is to use it as a center medallion for a larger quilt I am making. Hopefully I can make that work.

Thanks for your encouraging words yesterday regarding my medical issues. I am having some vision problems and hope to get some answers soon.

Have a great weekend everyone. To those of you in the US, it's Labor Day weekend, so may your barbeques be fabulous!

  1. Nicole, I’m so sorry its vision. Nothing healthwise is easy, but as a working musician and needleworker, I worry about the day I can’t see to play anymore. Your quilting sure doesn’t show any indication that is the problem! Beautiful as always. Prayers they get to the bottom of it!

  4. The other really good thing about that pressing bar, is after you press your seam open, then use the wood side to flatten the seam even further!

  7. Love my pressing bar! I agree with Audrey’s comment, using the wood side helps keep that seam flat. I used it on a quilt with a million hsts, and it really helped keep those blocks flat.
Sorry about your health problems and hope treatment goes well. Your blog is one of the few I read, so fun and informative. Thank you for all the work and love you put into it!

  10. And here I thought they couldn’t invent another quilting gadget I didn’t already have. I love the idea of it. I don’t press seams open because it’s such a hassle. Where did you get it??
Good luck with your eyes. They are such a precious commodity.

  16. So sorry to hear about your health issues Nicole. I’m glad you have some good medical facilities near you. Hope they are resolved quickly for you. Thanks for introducing us to that pressing tool. I have been pressing all my seams open for a while and sometimes they just aren’t flat enough. This tool looks really slick!

  19. Nicole, I pray that your vision problems are not anything serious and are resolved quickly. Your fall decor is beautiful. I’ve always been on the fence about the wool pressing bar, but after your review I may have to give it a try. Have a wonderful weekend.

  22. I’ve had a pressing tool similar to this for many years. I saw it demoed at a quilt show and of course was sold on it. The additional height and the woolly surface to press on are great improvements. Some tools are definitely worth the price. Hope all goes well with your appointments.

  25. Love your nicely pressed block! Hope your eyes get better soon, maybe rest them more if you can. Keeping fingers crossed it’s nothing serious. I do notice when I eat certain foods my hair and eyes are just better, lol. Not sure if it’s coincidence or not. Love the fall decor too!

  28. I cannot wait to see the finished quilt with the little goblins. Adorable! Where did you get your ironing board cover? It seems to me you made a post about it one time. It’s really beautiful.
