I'm making great progress on Petit Four. I had only three more Snail Trail blocks to make, so I dove in yesterday morning to make one before I went off to visit my sister in El Dorado. And guess what? I made it wrong. It is the Snail Trail block on the lower left. You can see the center four patch is oriented wrong.
Gah. There is no fixing that, so I still have three more blocks to make.
I was scared of making the Pineapple blocks, but they were a cinch once I made the first one. They actually went quite fast. While I was watching Kimberly's tutorial on how to make the Snail Trail blocks she must have said ten times that it was the hardest block, but honestly? Again, once I made the first one it was easy. The most difficult thing is making that tiny center four patch, which must be centered exactly straight or the whole block will be off. I used glue to center it, then did a basting stitch down two sides to keep it from shifting. That did the trick. I also worked with 1 1/4" squares, not 1" squares.
So, today I will make those last three blocks and sew the top together. Don't be afraid of foundation piecing, it really isn't that scary.
I had a lovely visit with my sister. It was the first time I got to see her new home, which is just lovely. I also got to hang out with my adorable great-niece, who sweetly asked if she could call me "Aunt Nicki". Aw. I've been feeling deprived of seeing my family and it's been so nice to have two weekends in a row where I was able to get together with them for a visit.

I also made the same mistake on one of my snail trail blocks. I was really frustrated when I started trimming one of the pineapple blocks on the sewing line. Again, there was nothing to do but make a new one. Your quilt in all blues is lovely. I am making a collection of small red and white quilts so you may have inspired me to make another in a single color way.

This is a lovely quilt and blue and white is perfect for after the holidays. So frustrating that a little turn of a block can can derail the process so quickly. It sounds like you had a great visit with your family. I look forward to seeing your finish and what you will be working on next.

I made a snail’s trail early on in my quilting career and I also had trouble with that 4 patch. I did not use paper for it. I designed it and laid the blocks out in a rainbow from corner to corner. I love it and all its’ imperfections and it hangs in the guest room.

Love how it is coming along! Bummer your mistake is in the center because it looks like you could’ve fixed it. Glad you got some family time, that’s always fun!

I belonged and was active in the local quilt guild for years. Then when my kids hit their teenage/college years, and I was busier than when they were babies, I took a long break.
I just started going back to the meetings. I am attending only, mostly to see the program and show/tell, I am not getting pulled into other things. It is interesting to see how much has changed. I am one of only 4 OG’s. About 80-90 people attend each monthly meeting,
One of the activities they are doing this (2024) year is UFO challenge. People had to sign up/commit. I think they paid a $5 fee to add their name to the list. Every other month, they bring a finished UFO to show/tell. It is extremely fun to see the projects and hear the stories of how/when these projects were originally started and how they got waylaid.
