Spring Break is Over…

Snow in backyard
"Spring break" is now over, such as it was. We sure didn't have spring-like weather, but it was nice to have unstructured days and no plans. The good news is, things are supposed to warm up this week and I am all on board for that.

Merc blocks 4:7
I did get all caught up with my Mercantile blocks. The latest four (for the last two weeks) are in the photo above.
Mer blocks to date
Here are all the blocks so far. There are five more to go and this top will be a finish! I think I am going to have to buy more of the low-volume backgrounds to make the setting triangles and a narrow outer border. I am pleased with the way the blocks stand out on those backgrounds.

Lori holt stash

One of the main reasons I decided to take on this Mercantile Sew Along was because I wanted to use up my stash of Lori Holt fabrics. As you can see, I have not made the slightest dent in that bin of fabrics. Honestly, I am not buying one more thing until I use up what I already have on hand.

I do have an idea for using up more of that stash, however. Do any of you remember a Moda Bakeshop sew-along from a couple of years ago called Summer in the Country? It featured an adorable line called Back Porch by Me and My Sister.

Summer in the country
I think I have enough Lori Holt reds, dark blues and light blues to give this quilt a good shot. It would be a wonderful summer quilt. Have any of you made this one? The block patterns are all free on the Moda Bakeshops website

Back Porch and LH
I never seem to run out of ideas for new projects. Or fabrics in my stash…

  1. I love how the Mercantile blocks are looking. I always gravitate towards the brighter colors. The red-white-blue one looks adorable too.

  4. Your Mercantile quilt is going to be so cheerful! I’m surprised when I think I’m going to use up my scraps how little is gone from my bin. Maybe there’s a little more room in the bin but not much…🤔 I had to check out ‘Summer in the Country’, I don’t remember seeing it previously. It will be a lovely summer quilt. In regards to Fridays post, I’m definitely a pinner, presser and a trimmer. Jessica does beautiful work and her blocks always look perfect, I don’t think mine would…

  7. Good to see that you’re back in your sewing room with plans for upcoming projects. I like the four blocks that you finished, especially the one with the yellow X at the top. It’s nice to have some time without any deadlines or schedules every now & then!

  10. It looks like you have turned the corner from winter to spring with your quilt blocks. Creative drive will get you there in no time. Pretty blocks on your design wall.

  13. yay! new quilt ideas are so fun and invigorating! chasing shiny things is my jam. I didn’t see that quilt design but I really like it.
um, about not buying new fabric…I have been working so hard for a solid year to only sew from my ginormous stash AND to use up scraps from the scrap bin. I keep getting stuck without enough background fabric. it.is.so.frustrating. 🙁
I had to hunt down some background fabric for my little hearts applique quilt that I’m working on. I have 110 hearts completed but the quilt requires 268. Fortunately for me I found a store selling it. ;0 enjoy the sunshine!

  16. I’m certainly never short of ideas, mostly due to inspiration from my favorite bloggers! Time is another matter. I don’t seem short of fabric stash either; you get much more out of those fat quarter bundles than you think you will. I still have Fig Tree fabric out the wazoo despite all the quilts I’ve made from it.
