Economy Block

Was Sunday not the longest day ever? I swear it felt like that day was 34 hours long instead of 24. When we turn the clocks back, it is always so hard for me to adjust to the time change. In addition, I have come down with a slight cold. Scratchy throat, irritating cough, lots of throat clearing. Hopeful that it will pass quickly.

Economy blocks
I did make the next nine foundation pieced blocks for the Petit Four sew-along. This block is called Economy, and to make it I used the 4" sized foundation papers by Fat Quarter Shop. Economy is a variation of the simple square in a square block, which you may recall gave me fits last week because I didn't have papers or a tool to make it in a one-and-a-half-inch finished size.

In 2020 I made an entire quilt using the Economy block. For these blocks I did not use foundation paper, but rather the Creative Grids Square on a Square ruler, which worked great. It comes in a four, six, or eight-inch size. You use oversized pieces of fabric and trim down to the perfect size. I used brown and red fabrics from my stash for this one. This simple block really does make a spectacular quilt.

Economy quilt on bed
Apparently, I really love the Economy block. This next colorful quilt is called Penny Pincher and is made with Primitive Gatherings fabric. This one I think is particularly beautiful. I love how the gold blocks make your eyes travel over the quilt top. I need to get it quilted. I must have used the Creative Grids trim tool for these blocks as well.

What are you working on this week? Hope it's a good one!

  1. YES, yesterday was a long day and it usually takes me two weeks to adjust— so sorry for your scratchy throat, at least I am not dealing with that. I have finished all 64 of my Summer Memories baskets and am now assembling them into the units of four. Thanks for the inspiration and hoping to have on my bed next summer!

  4. I agree that your Penny Pincher quilt is spectacular. It truly sparkles and makes me want to dig out my repro fabrics or Kansas Troubles that are heavy and dark and brighten them to life.

  7. The time change really threw me off. I didn’t get asleep until after midnight. I finished my economy blocks earlier so now I am trimming 300+ flying geese blocks to make Renee Nanneman’s Midnight Hour quilt. It’s a quilt that I started about 8 years ago and put aside when I was overwhelmed. I pulled it out a month ago and decided it’s time had come.

  10. It’s always difficult for me to adjust to a time change. And our dog is really feeling it! Her dinnertime is 5:00 & yesterday she was begging at 2:45! We gave in & fed her a little after 4:00! I’m doing the program at our fiber arts group meeting today so my weekend was spent pulling that together.

  13. So beautiful. All of them! Do you prefer the foundation papers or ruler for the economy blocks?

  16. Nicole, yes, please get that Penny Pincher quilt top pieced, it needs to be out, seen, loved, used. I’m piecing a leaf block quilt. I’ve pieced nearly 350 quilts and this is my first leaf quilt, guess I was waiting for the perfect pattern!
Yes, yesterday inched by. Are you watching The Gilded Age on HBO? The second season just started, my daughter and I love the clothes, the houses, the stories, everything about it. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a Sunday. We vacationed at Newport, RI last summer to see where all the amazing scenes take place.
Hope your nephew continues to improve, I’m keeping you all in my thoughts.

  19. 1) I was ready for bed at 8:30 last night. I hate time change. it’s very uncivilized.
    2) cold or covid? I didn’t bother to test when we both came down sick at the beginning of October. it was so mild but I couldn’t shake the fatigue and sore throat. I took a nap every single day in October and still fell asleep in the early evening. I went through 2 bags of Ricola.
I love that penny pincher quilt! I remember when you made it….I might have bought the pattern?

  22. I got the scratchy throat bug and tested 3 different times to be sure it was negative. Wore a mask in public. Mine was a good 10 days long and I was so tired! I’m hoping to get my unfinished Christmas quilt out this week. I think the blocks are done and I just have to do the fancy sashing, etc. And I agree, yesterday went on forever!!

  25. Seems to be a flu bug in our area too. I’m working on some Dresden plates. They are so much fun to make. I’m not sure what form will take place but am enjoying a site called southern charm. Good cold weather entertainment since winter is hovering close to us.

  28. Nicole, I just discovered your blog and have subscribed, and am enjoying reading about your quilting journey experiences. I am intrigued by the quilt off to the side in the pic of the beautiful economy block quilt on the bed. Would you be able to share the name of the pattern, and where you sourced it?
