Since my Blueberry Delight fabric arrived, I wasted no time in starching it and assembling my paper piecing supplies. I am very gung ho to get started on this Petit Four project. Supplies: What you need is a glue stick of some kind (I am using a Sewline glue stick, but a kid's school glue stick works fine too), a rotary cutter, an Add a Quarter seam ruler, a seam roller, and a small cutting mat. I also set up my iPad to help me with my fabric selection for the blocks.
For the first eight blocks, I am using the Courthouse Steps foundation paper.
The instructions are great, telling you just how many strips to cut for the block. I cut several fabrics at once, so the cutting went pretty fast.
The sewing is easy too, you just position the fabric carefully and sew on the appropriate line in numerical order. The paper is even shaded so you are sure to place your lights and darks in the right place. Be sure to use a very short stitch when you sew on foundation paper. My machine is set at 1.5 stitch length.
As you go, you flip the fabric strips, trim to a quarter-inch seam allowance, and press flat.
The first block took longer while I was getting up to speed, but the next ones went quickly. I love how perfect paper-pieced blocks turn out!
If you are interested in watching a foundation piecing video tutorial, Kimberly from Fatquarter Shop has several on YouTube. Here is the Courthouse Steps tutorial. She had a rather elaborate routine of creasing her foundation paper on every stitching line, which I did not do as I could not see why it was necessary. Otherwise, I followed her instructions.
Hope you are all having a great week. It's been a very slow week for comments, so I'd love to hear your experience with paper piecing! I'm beginning to wonder if anyone besides Jan, Anita, Sally, Mary, and Ina are reading my blog. Have you tried foundation paper piecing? Do you think it is intimidating?

Hi there! I always read your blog, first thing every day. It’s my favorite quilting blog. Well, it’s my favorite blog, period. I have done a little foundation paper piecing – I started with that foundation paper piecing quilt-along you were involved in a few years ago. I really enjoyed that project, but didn’t care for all the blocks, so I select a few and work on those every few months. I think foundation paper piecing is a lot of fun, but I always set that project aside because I have more pressing projects to attend to. Right now I’m working on an Elizabeth Hartmann quilt, and it is time consuming and meticulous. But lots of fun. When (if) I finish it, I have a couple quilts that have been set aside for quite awhile, which I have told myself will get finished before I take on anything new. I’m so glad that you are enjoying your new project – thanks for sharing it with us, and for all the info about the FQS foundation papers.

I read you blog faithfully but only rarely comment. When I cared for my mom and didn’t have much sewing time, I “sewed” vicariously through you. I always enjoy your take on tools and techniques too. You have me excited for piecing this quilt but alas have too many projects in the works. Looking forward to following your progress on this one!

Hello, I just recently ‘found’ your blog and I so enjoy reading your entries. I have tried paper piecing in the past and, let’s say, it is not for me! I will enjoy watching your project come together and I love your fabric choice!

Still here! Yours is the only blog I still read. I have done foundation paper piecing and love the results. I have too many projects I am in the middle of right now to start another one – ops. LOL. I need to get some finished and that is my goal for the next few months. Maybe one day I will have everything done and only working on one project at a time. Ya, that will never happen. 🙂

I follow your blog everyday. You have such a wonderful style of writing. I haven’t done much paper piecing but, would like to do more. I am currently working on donating baby quilts to the NICU of our hospital.

I read your blog every day. I enjoy reading about your quilting projects and also the recipes you try. I especially like seeing photos of your quilts on display in your home. I have never done any foundation piecing. I remember once a lady who worked in a quilt shop told me “give me five minutes and I’ll show you how” to do it. We recently moved into a condo and I’ve been busy sorting through things and trying to get organized. Downsizing is hard but I am not going to let it affect my fabric stash. I hope to get back to sewing regularly real soon.

I read and enjoy your blog everyday. I love foundation paper piecing! I have worked on several projects and really enjoy how perfect the blocks end up looking. I’ve also tried freezer paper foundation piecing which is nice because there is no paper to remove.

I really like how perfect blocks are with paper piecing. I just started doing it this year. I am doing the same quilt along as you, but using my stash.

I read your blog every day. Often it motivates me to sew my own projects. I have bought and used several items, books and patterns that you use. I have even read some of the books you review. Most of all, I feel inspired by your blog! Keep at it! We are out here!

I love your blog! Not sure I’m the Anita you mentioned, but it sure was fun seeing my name. I was wondering what you have taped down on your sewing machine bed? Thank you so much in advance. And by the way, your pup is adorable!! Be careful he doesn’t steal the show.😉♥️

Hello Nicole, as you can see you have quite a few “lurkers” out there in blog land, and I am one of them. I read you faithfully just haven’t commented more than a few times. I love paper piecing but don’t think I will be doing this quilt along – the pattern just doesn’t call out to me. Of course I might change my mind when I see your progress.

Still here! Paper piecing isn’t my favourite, although I have done some.
I do have issues with your emails because they go to the junk folder every time. I’ve ticked “not junk”, “never block sender”, “never block senders domain and mailing list” – yet still it goes in that file. I’m on it now – I just flip it into the in-box. Yours isn’t the only one that happens to – sometimes my husband’s mail does that. I just have a pernickety in-box, stupid microsoft as it only happened since they changed to making the links go to their own browser instead of and overriding the one I use.
Anyway I do read all your posts, may not comment though. All’s well Archie, you lovely boy!

Nancy reads your blog! 😊 I am not sure why I rarely comment but I love your blog. I have never tried paper piecing but might get brave enough to try it one day.

Discovered your blog a few years ago and have been a faithful reader ever since but have never commented. I will try to do better so you don’t feel like you are talking to yourself all the time. haha I enjoy all the little glimpses into your life, have tried some recipes and keep your book reviews to help me choose my Daughter’s Christmas book. You inspire me with all things quilting as well and though I don’t think paper piecing is my thing I love looking at your progress.

I just bought foundation papers for Wensleydale, which is a Jen Kingwell pattern in her book Quilt Recipes. I’ve done foundation piecing before and it really does help with accuracy. Going to follow your lead and starch all the fabrics before starting!

Good Morning Nicole, I’m still out here, I enjoy your blog posts with my coffee every morning. Thanks for blogging about this sew along, I was not aware of it. I think the pattern would be great for my annual hometown library raffle quilt, they like big quilts and if I use the 12″ papers the quilt will finish at 88″ x 88″, a monster. I’m thinking of using my Minick and Simpson stash for the fabric. I was tempted to go with the Bunny Hill fabric but not sure the blue would appeal to the masses for a raffle quilt. M & S will give me the blues and I can add some tans and reds. I love paper piecing, the blocks always turn out perfect. I have square in a square papers and always use them when piecing those blocks.

I read your blog every day and no I don’t do paper piecing. Right now I’m all about charity quilts as my “kids” don’t want/need more quilts. Trying to sew up my stash which is plenty big.
Love Archie!!

I’m here, I love your blog. Archie is adorable, I love hearing about him and I especially love your book reviews (isn’t it about time for one???? LOL) I have discovered many good books that I wouldn’t have picked for myself by reading your reviews. Thanks for all the great entertainment and info you provide!

I’m one of the lurkers. Occasionally comment on your book reviews. Love those.
I have paper pieced for years. Ever heard of Granniies Nannies. I think they were from early 90s. I rarely use paper now.

I always read your blog faithfully. It’s the only one I do read! It is so interesting and helpful! I had trouble once sending you a comment, so haven’t tried again since. But please know how much I appreciate the time you put into such an informative and fun blog.
I bought the same fat eighth bundle of the blues you posted about yesterday. I’m not doing the paper piecing quilt though. I’m intimidated by it!

The first pattern I pieced was a New York Beauty. It took a while for me to get the hang of it but it’s the only way to go for me to piece that pattern. I find that when I haven’t done it in a while, it takes a bit to get up to speed again but I really like the precision it provides.

Yoo-hoo! Hi! It’s me. I follow you every time you post, honest, I’m just no good at commenting. I’ve done paper piecing a number of times (and will again in the future), but it can be very frustrating. In the end, though, the results are always worth it. You can see my most ambitious project on Instagram if you like. I’m nalderman47. The quilt was pictured on July 25, 2017. I’m not prepared to try anything that complex again, but I’ll go for easier blocks!

I follow a few blogs, but yours is one of my favorites. I am amazed with how much piecing you get done but it is always a motivator for me! Thank you for inviting all of us into your life.

Haven’t been commenting much of late, as life has been a bit overwhelming. But I definitely want you to know that your readers/followers appreciate and value your blog. Thanks, Nicole!

Good Morning Nicole (and fellow Sisters Choice blog readers)! I printed out the directions for the FQS paper piecing Petit Fours project… am not sure if I will follow along with their timing but think I will participate at some point. I have done alot of paper piecing and find it is a fun break from regular piecing. I, like so many others that have commented, read and follow your blog religiously, but rarely comment… and I am wondering why? Nicole, I have been wondering if you or any of your readers know what has happened to Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie’s Quilts. It does not seem that she is writing under Moda Bakeshop any longer and I see no mention of her anywhere. Looking forward to seeing your Petit Fours journey!!

Well, you’ve got your answer this morning, haven’t you? I knew that you must have so many readers who just don’t comment! We appreciate that you share a variety of subjects & admire your many talents! I haven’t learned the art of paper piecing. But I probably should give it a try after seeing how many of your readers enjoy it. Old dogs & new tricks?

Hi, Archie! Love seeing your photos. I also have done paper piecing and enjoy it, although it takes up a lot more fabric than I like. I do fold the papers on the stitch line as I think it makes it easier to peel the paper off afterward. I always take the time to read this blog no matter how busy I am. I like the fun, breezy style and bits of useful information, and the book reviews. Wish we were neighbors!

I read your blog but rarely comment. I love seeing what you are working on and the tips you give. I haven’t done much paper piecing but have some to try. I also bought the new to me Add a Quarter plus which has a tapered edge. A friend told me it makes the paper piecing easier. And of course I love a new gadget. lol. Archie is so cute.

I also read your blog daily, but rarely comment. Your quilting is beautiful and it’s always great to learn your helpful info for tools and techniques.
I have had very good results with paper piecing, but I don’t do it enough to feel really comfortable when I first start a project.
The results always tend to amaze me though!
I love the look of this blue and white quilt and also the little batty table topper/wall hanging you blogged about a few days ago.
Love your blog!

I really enjoy your blog! Been sick this week with a really bad cold (test negative) and haven’t been up to answering anyone. I have done paper piecing but really don’t like it; my brain can’t get around the weird angles! I think FQS papers would help.

Please keep blogging. I’m a quilter and have followed your blog for several years. Your fabric choices are always great and your piecing is fabulous. I have also come to love your book reviews and have found myself reading some great books by following your recommendations.

Yes, I follow your blog and enjoy your content. One of the very first quilt tops I made was paper pieced and did not enjoy it. Maybe I need to try one again. Thank you for all you do.

I’ve been following you since your very early days of blogging! I used to do a lot of quilting back in those days.

I’m not a huge fan of paper piecing but Ihave done it. I really struggled with putting the blocks together after piecing them. I pinned but still got wonky intersections. Now, I just avoid it!
I do admit to piecing really tiny blocks as I love them. I think it’s a great challenge to sew that accurately. I use a Singer 301, a vintage straight stitch machine like the better known Featherweight. I find that those old metal feet give me more accuracy than the newer snap on feet. They seem ver sloppy and floppy to me.

I read your blog when you post – on Feedly. Sorry I don’t comment more. Thank you for sharing. I’ll try to do better

I have read your blog for several years. Don’t look in every day, but every 3 or 4. Foundation papers are a great invention. The first time I bought them I didn’t buy the right size, but soon learned the correct way to us them. I especially enjoy your book reviews and am amazed at how many you do in a month. By the way Archie is adorable.

Hi, Nicole — Been a bit quiet Down Under since I’ve been dealing with a tweaked back, but things are looking up, finally! Also, we are planning our return to Glen Ellen, permanently, toward the end of the year, so busy!
I’m not a big fan of paper-piecing, though I’ve done a bit. I find it fiddly dealing with all the paper bits at the end. But I’m still working on my GFG with all the paper hexes.
Oh, and I have a book recommendation: The Editor, by Stephen Rowley. Good read!

You know what they say ” If you can’t say anything nice…” And that’s how I feel about paper piecing. Not for me. My new obsession is applique.
And I love your book reviews, your suggestions have been keeping very busy reading too. Thank you for the great recommendations!

I have been reading your blog for years. I’m always inspired by your creative posts. I love your honesty about what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been doing paper foundation piecing for years and love the accuracy it produces.

Yes, I’m another one that reads your blog every weekday (during my lunch period), and I try to comment most days. I think I’m the Sally you are referring to! 🙂
Tried paper-piecing a fancy design in a quilting class. While the block turned out fantastic, I just couldn’t wrap my head around the backwards, mirrored fabric placement. I had to have the teacher help me with EVERY step!
Archie is, of course, adorable!

I too look forward to reading your blog every day. I love seeing your beautiful photos, your lovely quilts, your delicious recipes, and your book reviews. While I will never make quilts as lovely as yours or read as many books as you do, you give me so much to aspire to.

It’s been a while since I’ve commented on your blog but I do love to read about all of your projects. You keep busy! I’ve paper pieced a few projects and I don’t mind doing it, I just take it slow and make one block at a time. To me it’s like regular piecing only there is a piece of paper on top. Good luck with your project.

I have followed your blog for over 16 years but seldom comment. I apologize. You produce a wonderful blog, absolutely hands down one of the best quilting blogs going. I love that you reference sources for your content and share so much with your readers. I suspect that you have for more followers than you can imagine.
Timely that you should bring up foundation piecing, my guild had a demo/sewing day yesterday making foundation pieced pumpkins (rather intricate ones with little traditional blocks in the centre). I have done some in the past but typically don’t bother, hand appliqué is my preference. Karen

Hi! I read – and sometimes re-read – all your blog posts, and have been for more than ten years. I don’t normally comment as English isn’t my first language. I have learned so much about quilting from you and have discovered some wonderful books.
Greetings from the Netherlands!

I truly enjoy your blog and wish I could have the time to quilt and keep up with your projects. The introduction of Archie has been fun to read. Enjoy all the enthusiasm that a pup can bring! Eva has also been a joy to read about.

I’m still here and reading every time you post! I found you sometime ~May 2020 when I surely needed more quilty content in my life, and I’ve been a regular reader (and occasional commenter) since then. I like your quilty content, updates about your family, and your food stuff too! I love foundation paper piecing and use the method of Carol Doak that I learned from her books, and I make use of the Add-a-Quarter ruler. I did just switch to the Add-a-Quarter Plus rulers though because they keep my fingers a bit farther from my rotary blade!

Hi, Nicole, I read your blog but my schedule allows me a few blocks of time each week rather than every day so sometimes I’m behind and feel foolish commenting days after the post was made (case in point!). I love your style and constant sewing. Your fabric and pattern choices are so great. I’ve read many books based on your reviews, thank you for those! I appreciate your efforts, don’t stop, please! Have a great weekend!

Lol just saw this and know there is another Anita. I feel I catch up on posts all at once and love reading what you’re up to, your book reviews, new pets, watching Eva grow up and your recipes. Oh and your fabulous quilts always get me motivated to buy the pattern or fabric, so not sure if that is good or not, lol! Please keep posting, love seeing what you’re up to!

Still here and way behind on blog reading. I love to paper piece and just made a cute pillow with paper pieced pumpkins. I think one of the reasons I like it so much is that I learned in a class (from Carol Doak) years ago, so understood the right technique from the start.
