Haunted Halloween Bat block
Time to switch gears and look at something different. Fat Quarter Shop is hosting a free Halloween sew-along, which they have done for a couple of years now. This is called the Haunted Halloween Mystery sew-along, and the first free blocks came out this week, along with a YouTube video tutorial led by Kimberley. Check out the links for the free pattern and fabric requirements and how-to instructions.

There is just something about a Halloween project that I simply cannot resist.

Doug Leko ruler
To get the effect of the bat flying across the harvest moon, you need to do a technique called (among other things) a folded triangle corner. Typically you draw a diagonal line on the square you are attaching to the corner, then trim away 1/4" from your stitching line after sewing.

Mini simple folded corner ruler
I used a special ruler a lot of you have been raving about. It is Doug Leko's Mini Simple Folded Corner Ruler. In this case, you place the ruler so the line runs along the diagonal of the corner square and simply trim it away. Sew 1/4" from the edge and there you go. It actually is a great little tool.

I have to tell you, my sewing room is such a mess it is hardly a pleasure to spend time in it. I am overwhelmed with all the projects I have everywhere in various stages of not being finished. Starting today and going the rest of the week, I plan to finish up a thing or two, clear off the design wall, empty out some project bins, and get that place organized and straightened up. Wish me luck!

  1. I love those flip corner rulers…they have made my piecing for certain things more precise…and I use them often. I like the creative grids version a little better because it doesn’t move, as it has those non-slip ‘dots’ on the back…but whichever one you use, they are such a help!
    Thank you for highlighting them!

  4. And be sure to show us what you finish!
I find I love being in my sewing room when things are neat and tidy. Even a simple run of the sweeper makes the room feel nicer to be in.

  7. Your block is adorable! The folded corner rulers are invaluable for accuracy! I did a ‘big tidy up’ in my sewing room last year & am trying to stick with picking up after a project to keep it that way. Sometimes it works…

  10. I just cleaned up my sewing room yesterday morning and spent the afternoon sewing. I get much more accomplished in a clean room and it just feels nice! Good luck with this week’s sewing endeavors.
