Sewcialites Block 17

Vanessa Goertzen's block 17
This is "Simplicity", Sewcialites Block 17, designed by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique. That is her photo above of the two blocks she made using her gorgeous Love Note fabrics.

I didn't think this block would work in the style of quilt I am planning, so I decided to skip it. I was going to leave it out of my quilt until I saw a couple of variations, which got me thinking about ways I could "lighten up" this block.

I made four hourglass blocks instead of three and made the corner blocks half-square triangles rather than solid squares. My center square is a fussy-cut floral. I am quite happy with my variation and think it will go better with my other blocks, which all have the white background fabric I have used throughout. It just goes to show you that you can use your imagination and make a tweak or two and turn a quilt block into something that suits your taste or needs better. I am grateful to the FaceBook posters in the Sewcialites Lounge group who posted pictures of their variations on this block, which inspired mine.

I hope your weekend was splendid. Our weather was super cold (in the 30s) and we had a lot of sleet/rain/snow at our elevation (1350 feet). It was the perfect weekend to stay inside. I spent Saturday finishing all my Don't Fence Me In blocks (yay!), and Sunday just puttering around looking up recipes and reading book reviews. I hope to have my February book reviews out for you this coming week.

  1. Had to biggie your block to see how you accomplished the same effect with your hourglass blocks, very clever and so-o Nicole. Looking good. I worried about California weather with another storm while we in DFW had plenty of cold to keep us occupied. All’s well that ends well and we are back in the 70’s and my CA family got by. Love that you seem to be busy with quilting again, just one quilt after another. I am making more complex blocks so not turning out so many quilts these days. Still fun working on them.

  4. What a surprise to see the pastel blocks in the first photo! Those are not your usual colors so I’m glad you told us that’s the designer’s picture! I like your variation of the block & it’s more suited to your color palette. Congrats on finishing your Don’t Fence Me In blocks! It sounds like you survived the storms in California that have been in the news! Spring can’t be that far away, right?

  7. Your weather sounds the same as here. We had snow on Saturday for a couple of hours — it was amazing! Of course at my elevation it melted soon after hitting the ground, but still! The local mountains are just covered and beautiful. Such a nice change. Everyone and their mothers was out taking videos to document the event.
