A Few New Purchases

Like RIp Van Winkle, I recently woke up and realized I had missed out on some great fabric collections. I made a valiant effort to acquire some pieces of these fabrics, and this is what I managed. I could not get my hands on the precise cuts that I wanted, but that is what happens when you are asleep at the switch when fabrics are released and you do not purchase them in a timely manner.

The first collection above, is Harvest Road by Lella Boutique. Beautiful blues and greens and tans, in the most innovative and lovely prints. I managed to score a layer cake, a honey bun, and some green print fabric I could use for a backing or border. I really wish I could have found some of the navy print shown on the top of the layer cake, but alas, it seems to be all gone.

This is half of a Bonnie and Camille collection called "At Home". The Camille part of it is beautiful prints in a navy and green colorway. I managed to get a honey bun and some green border fabric. I am challenged to figure out how to use a honey bun, but this fabric is so pretty, I can't wait to come up with something.

And this is Bonnie's version of the same "At Home" collection. This is all done in reds and greens and will make the most delectable Christmas project. I cannot wait to make some kind of table runner or table topper with this group. I was so happy I scored some of the main red print for a border. Again, all I could get was a honey bun, so there is that.

And this is the latest block for the Sewcialites sew-along. I have to say, it completly broke me. I tried for hours to get this block to turn out and I failed. Totally. I suspect there is some problem with the dimensions of that first square in a square unit. I think it is a smidge too big. I could not get the quarter inch seam allowance I needed to attach the outer units. My block was just off and I don't know why. I could not get a final 6.5" block. Believe me, I re-did it umpteen times. I spent hours on it. Nope. Couldn't do it. On FaceBook, people kept saying "you have to do a scant quarter inch seam", but really? I think I will have to come up with another block to substitute in its place. Seriously, I am done with this one.

Hope you all had a nice weekend. I spent mine with my father, and I am so grateful for the time we had together. As I write this, it is Valentine's evening, and my husband and I have had a lovely dinner.  Looking foward to a night sleeping in my own bed!

  4. Love Harvest Road!! I have made one quilt top, using the panel for backing. I also have a layer cake still to use. The At Home fabrics appear quite similar in the blues and greens, but your idea for the reds will be wonderful.

  7. I think it would be pretty easy to find a square in a square paper piecing template online in the right size. And if THAT doesn’t work, then clearly your project needs a different block.

  10. We have similar taste or like similar colors as I also gravitated to both of those fabric lines. In fact, my Harvest Road quilt, done while quarantining, is posted on Primitive Gathering’s FB feed this morning.

  16. If you are up for one more try, you might check out
    catbirdquilts.wordpress.com
I bookmarked it a while ago because it gives a chart to make several sizes
Economy block and step by step pictures.
Deb tucker also has a ruler and technique sheet.
I am not tech savvy but I can send you a picture of the chart if you want it

  19. I understand why they’re almost impossible to find because both fabric lines are beautiful! It will be fun to see how you use what you were able to find. How nice you were able to spend Valentine’s Day with your dad & then your husband! Stay well!

  22. Joanna Figueroa has a pattern that uses a honey bun – I think it’s called Sugar Swirls (I seem to have misplaced my pattern). I’ve made it, and it’s quite striking.

  25. Your fabrics are lovely! Fat Quarter Shop has foundation papers for both Log Cabin blocks and Courthouse Step blocks…both 6″ finished…that use honeybuns. I’m making a Courthouse Steps quilt for my daughter who graduates from law school in May and have found them easy to work with.

  28. I think you can look on Moda Bake shop and search for honey buns and find some ideas. (But you probably know that.) I had a fat quarter bundle of Harvest Road and made a quilt from it but I’ve got some fat quarters left if you are interested. Email me if you are! The designers come out with stuff faster than we can sew them up!

  34. For a 3 1/2″ square in square you need to start with a 2 5/8″ square in the middle. Then 2 3/8″ triangles to surround it.

  37. Craft Warehouse is a store with locationWashington and Portland Oregon areas. I also am a fan of Harvest Road and was at two of their locations (Gresham and Beaverton) and discovered they had put remaining bolts on sale. Each only had a couple patterns, but they were different at each store…so you might try calling them. They also had layer cakes and jelly rolls on sale. Good luck. Still have’t decided what to do with mine but I have been collecting them too.

  40. I love the red and green At Home collection but had resisted buying it. After reading this post I purchased the red flower print for the border and a fat quarter bundle. Fat eighth and fat quarter bundles are still available from several shops on Etsy.

  43. Hey Nicole, I have a fq bundle of that Harvest Road fabric, it’s yours if you want it, the colors are too muted for my taste. It could use a good home.

  46. Love the fabrics – and wonder if your fit to be geese ruler would help you with that block? After all your years raving about it, I finally pulled mine out and have started using it!

  49. I redrafted this block on graph paper and it came out fine. I started out with a 6″ square and drew it as it appears and then added seam allowances and configured HST. It worked. I usually do that with patterns because most of them are too fiddly and have more seams than they really need.
