Three More Blocks

How is your week going? Mine is pretty great. I love making these tiny little paper pieced blocks. I am reading a couple of good books. Homeschooling is going well. I really can't complain.

Regarding the blocks above- The brown and cream one front and center is adorable, and the buzz saw red and brown one on the upper right is pretty cute. But that red one on the left had me reaching for Jack (the Ripper) time and again. It still didn't come out perfect. I may re-do it.

I have a question for you experienced paper piecers. When you assemble your block in sections, how do you handle sewing seams together when you attach one section to another? Do you remove the paper so you can better see where your seam intersections are? Do you pin? With these tiny blocks, putting in a pin can distort things, so I have been avoiding pinning.

I just hate it when the points don't line up (such as with the red and cream block).

Book update:  I think some book reviews may be overdue. I will take a look at what I read in January and put up some reviews soon. Those reviews are labor-intensive, so I just need to drag myself away from those little paper pieced blocks and do something else! The book I am reading at the moment is "The Push" by Ashley Audrain. The book reminds me a lot of "We Need To Talk About Kevin", which I read about 10 years ago. The subject matter is rather unpleasant, but it is so well written I have been completely caught up in the story. Basically, a mother has a child who she feels is not quite right, and she suspects her offspring may actually be doing some things that are downright evil. The author is managing to handle the subject matter in a way that demonstrates all the conflicting feelings one would have as the mother of such a child. I'll finish it in a day or so and give you a full review next week.

Just a reminder, the Sentimental Stitches Little Blocks 365 patterns are still available for $36.50 through 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time today, Feb. 4. It is so much fun, and I think a real deal for 365 block patterns.

  1. When paper piecing, I recently have started removing the paper before sewing parts together. I was struggling as you are, with pins moving things out of position and not being happy with my results. So I press the components and remove the papers and then sew the seams. I found I was much happier with the results and I don’t have to pick paper out of the seam lines.

  4. It is much easier to remove the paper from the seam allowances as you prepare to sew sections together to not only visualize the intersections being sewn but also getting that paper out of the seam allowance is easier before all seams are sewn together…if that makes sense. And yes,I use pins in the intersect to hold sections together as I am assembling but remove as I get close to stitching the intersections.

  7. Glad that your week is going so well. Those little blocks are adorable. So adorable in fact, that I succumbed and signed up too. (And so did a friend!) My plan is to work at it, slow and steady, over a long period. Might be my “lifetime” project! First task — choose fabric/colours. There are a lot of blocks, so it needs to be something I can live with for a long time.
On the book front, I will be very interested to read your review of The Push. It’s getting major publicity as a breakout book for a first-time author.

  10. I do the same thing the other ladies have suggested…remove the paper before sewing sections together. It will save you from getting so frustrated with the tiny blocks. And I finally reached an entirely different decision on what fabrics to use for my Little Blocks. Not batiks or 30’s. I have many great Kim Diehl fabrics/scraps that will hold my interest throughout the year so I won’t get bored with the project. Just couldn’t wrap my head around the entire picture and make a decision. So Kim Diehl fabrics it is!! And now I am excited to get started. I’ve had the patterns since the beginning, as I signed up back in 2020. I am behind, but determined to catch up.

  13. I know how you feel when points don’t line up. I’m no help on the seams, however, because I don’t paper piece. It’s nice when you have a week that just seems to flow right along without any ‘hiccups’! Stay well!

  16. I didn’t think I would be interested in this project, but after taking a look…and seeing what a few books on paper piecing would cost…I thought this would be an excellent and more cost effective way to get a whole bunch of patterns and learn a new skill. I don’t see myself working continuously on this project…but hey, who knows! I may get hooked on those cute little blocks too! I will have to make a decision on what fabrics to use.

  19. Lovely blocks, it would be so easy to succumb and sign up but I am resisting as I have so many projects on the go. I’ll satisfy my urge by following your progress. I am doing a bit of paper piecing by way of two blocks as part of a group project by my Guild (we meet twice a month via Zoom).

  22. I keep the paper on and pin the intersections. I’ve never made a block this small so I don’t know what I will do. Yikes. I guess I’ll try removing the paper and then pinning? ;p

  25. Gosh darn it…I caved! I just couldn’t resist any longer. I signed up, and I’m going to blame you for posting those adorable photos 🙂
I’ve got some catching up to do!

  28. I do remove the paper in the seam allowance and pin the intersections. It helps to get exact matches between the sections.
