Have an Ohana 4th of July

Fullsizeoutput_1a2e

Our national day of independence, the 4th of July is this Saturday.  If you celebrate, I hope you do so safely and with those you love.  We are having a small family barbeque at Eva's daddy's house.  He is a fantastic cook, so whatever we have will be amazing.

Eva is with her mommy this weekend, so it will just be our "ohana" family, consisting of my (ex) son-in-law, his new wife, his new mother-in-law, my husband and me (his former in-laws).  This may seem to be an odd coming together of people unless you are familiar with the Hawaiian term "ohana".  Ohana means family, but not necessarily the family you were born into.  Ohana is a very embracing and extensive use of the term "family", it can mean those you are related to, those you adopt, or those who you intentionally include in your family group.

With Ohana, nobody gets left behind, and all are welcome and loved.  Many blessings upon you and whomever you consider your family.

  1. Ohana – what a beautiful concept. We make our family by surrounding ourselves with people we love, blood-related or not. Here’s hoping you have a happy and safe 4th!

  4. We definitely have an Ohana family. Many exes, second (and third!) marriages, many step- and half- siblings and their families. And both my hubby’s and my families have celebrated together for years. It’s warm and comfortable. We currently celebrate holidays with our nephew and his wife and her family, and my step-sister and her family! Happy 4th to all!

  7. I love that idea of family! I lost my father when I was 7 and though my stepfather was awesome, his family made it clear that I was not welcome. I didn’t really understand. My sons wife and family have tiotally embraced his daughter and I am so thankful. I agree that the term family applies to those you love. What a lucky woman you are. Happy 4 th!

  22. Sounds like a fine time will be had by all in your Ohana family. My parents were both teachers and saw many kids with difficult family lives. We learned early that “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.” It was something they tried to teach their students, that you can have loving and supportive people around you if you choose well, you aren’t limited to those issued to you by birth. Happy 4!
