This Week’s Piecing the Past Blocks and Wedding Plans

I am continuing to piece the weekly blocks for the Piecing the Past "Comfort and Joy" sew-along.  This week's blocks were really good.  The one at the top in the photo above is called "Lilies" and is one of my favorites for sure.  I reduced the size from 9" to 6".  I had a bit of operator error, but I erred in the direction of too large and could trim down with no ill effects.  It was challenging, with the smallest squares measuring in at 3/4" finished.  I love the effect of the two different reds.

Such a pretty block.  But I'm glad I only had the one to make!

I have to share this with you.  My niece Emily has been planning her June wedding for the past year or more.  She has not had the easiest time of it over the last few years, with her younger sister and her mother (my sister and my niece) both passing away from cancer within a year of one another.  She is a strong young woman, and with the love of her father and brother has come out of the ghastly ordeal, battered, but not broken.  Her wedding was something our entire family has been greatly anticipating.  It is about time she had some happiness and joy come her way and we were all on board for a fabulous celebration.

And then we got Covid-19.   This has put a real monkey wrench on the plans.  I know, I know.  People suffered during WW2, Vietnam, and the Depression.  Times have been hard for folks in the past.  At least we didn't die from the coronavirus and lot of people have it worse.  The bottom line is that this is rotten luck for a lovely young woman who deserves better.  She rose to the occasion though and sent out this announcement:

With humor and good grace, she and her fiancé postponed their celebration until next year.

  1. You’re blocks look great. 3/4″ finished is crazy talk at my house, but you make it look easy.
What a bummer for your niece, but a wise and thoughtful decision. I hope it makes next year’s celebration all the sweeter.

  4. Your blocks look good. And Lilies is gorgeous — beautiful colour choices and great piecing. Love the block.
Your niece made a great but difficult choice. Wishing her all the best, and a most joyful celebration, when it happens.

  7. “In light of current circumstances…”, so sorry to E&E for the postponement. I’m still avoiding everywhere, including a haircut appointment. God forbid there’s a second round. I do go to my son’s and they come here, thank goodness. My grandson is very fond of “sleepovers” and I am very happy to be with him. Your blocks are coming along great. Aren’t we lucky to have a hobby that we love? I’ve started yet another quilt because fabric ordering is slow for the previous 1-2 in the works. Is Eva done with school or is school work on the menu for summertime?

  10. That’s so grown-up & mature, but so disappointing at the same time. They’ll get through it together with great family support, but my heart hurts for them. Stay well.

  13. As soon as I saw that first picture of the 3 blocks, I thought “I like that block on the top” – the Lilies block. It’s very striking with the two tones of red.
I think your niece made the right decision and it will be a less stressful occasion next year. I love her announcement for postponing – a little bit of humour and a lot of thoughtfulness.

  16. Probably the best decision all around but certainly disappointing for the family looking forward to a celebration after all the bad. My nephew is engaged but they haven’t set a date yet.

  19. My heart hurts for her and all of you. 🙁 She has experienced so much loss in her young life. I hope next year is better for all of us.

  22. I am so sorry for your nieces timing. I hope they can be making memories and the wedding in a year will be sweeter for it. That said this sucks. My heart goes out to you all.

  25. How funny, I have a niece Emily who was getting married 6/13. They decided to get married anyway and have a bbq at the home afterwards with a reception next year. The bummer (besides them having to reschedule) is there are already 40 plus people going to the bbq, including her 87 year old grandma! They’re a bunch of nurses in the family so I’m hoping they’re thinking this through. Just sounds dangerous to me 😳
