Excuse the pun, I couldn't resist. My orphan block pile grew a bit more today, but I did decide on a lattice for my Blockheads 1 quilt and have begun to cut it out. I want the blocks to kind of "float" and be separated from one another, so I am going with a
1 1/2 inch lattice with no little cornerstone squares.
Here is the orphan block pile. Reasons for being rejected are mostly for being too dark, too murky looking, being a wonky size, being too simple, too orange or just not fitting in. That Snail's Trail is a good block, but to my eye, it just stood out as not being like the others. I really did not care for the blocks with the super dark backgrounds in particular. I don't mind a few, but I didn't like the murky effect that more of them made.
So here are today's remakes:
This block is called Album. My favorite blocks were the ones that had the brighter tones of Kansas Troubles fabrics. And scrappy makes me happy. This one is from the Summer Moon book.
I re-did Bow Ties with a lighter background and am a lot happier with it.
I found this block pattern in a book of blocks I had on hand. They call it Homespun.
And how adorable is this one? It is actually a Blockheads 2 pattern called Ribbon Star.
I have no idea where to begin looking for a good applique design for the center square. Any ideas of good resources?
Is it a long weekend for some of you? I have Eva on Monday due to Lincoln's birthday holiday, and am thinking of having one of her little pals over for a play date. Maybe we will go see the Doolittle movie. I remember being a teenager and going to a shopping center near my home where they had a petting zoo, featuring a llama. My youngest sister Trish insisted the animal could not possibly be a llama because it did not have two heads.
Have a great weekend everyone.

You have some of the most beautiful quilts in the blog world. I did an 8-point star scrap quilt and set the blocks with lattice and cornerstones. It’s one of my favorite quilts, and I just love it.
I machine quilted an orphan block and use it as a large coffee coaster. I sew mostly with civil war fabrics, and this coaster works well with coffee spills.

For the center applique, Jan Patek has a pattern in her most recent blog post that has a house and tree as the center of a medallion quilt. She has lots of other applique ideas and is one of the Block Head designers.

I was surprised to see you removed Snail’s Trail, but it did draw my eye immediately when it was in your layout yesterday. Good decision, in my opinion! Having Eva invite a friend for the day sounds like a great idea! Enjoy the day whatever you decide to do!

Your final layout looks great. And your new blocks are really nice. That thin lattice is going to be perfect. As for those orphan blocks, I liked someone’s suggestion from yesterday to include them on the back. Have fun searching for an idea for the centre medallion. And have a nice long weekend.

Some of the Blackbird Designs books have good applique designs. Like Garden Club or Country Inn. What ever you do, it’s going to be gorgeous!
