Best Audible Books of 2018

Audio

One way I was able to get so many books "read" during 2018 is that a number of them were audio versions of a book.  I belong to Audible.com and have been a member for at least ten years.  When I first joined, they would send you a CD in the mail that you would send back after you listened to the book on your portable CD player!  Now of course everything is downloaded in seconds to your device.  I use my iPhone and little ear buds or play the audio through my car speaker using Bluetooth.  I love to listen to audio books while I sew and sometimes when I take long walks or car trips.  They are a must for long car trips!

Some of the best reads of my year were audio books.  Here are the ones I enjoyed the most.  Click the link for a description of the book and to listen to a sample:

Heft by Liz Moore
Educated by Tara Westover
We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter
Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman
The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain
The Address by Fiona Davis
The Love Letter by Lucinda Riley
The Pearl Sister by Lucinda Riley
Ember Island by Kimberley Freeman
Letters to the Lost by Iona Grey

This past year I read a bit of  "women's fiction" through my Audible.com subscription.  In 2019 I want to listen to more memoirs, as they are often read by the author and have so much more feeling than when read by an actor.

One nice thing about Audible.com is that if you start a book and find that you are not enjoying it, you can return it for a new credit!  I am not kidding, that is just the best service.

In the comments, please do share what audio books you have enjoyed.  We are always on the look out for more good recommendations!

  1. My all-time favorite audio book is ‘The Help’. I listened to it before reading the book or seeing the movie. Whether you know the story or not, I recommend listening! The mesmerizing voices are well worth your time!

  4. I listened to quite a few audio books last year. Through my membership at our local library, I can access Hoopla, a digital service providing books, e-books, audiobooks and movies. It’s great! I, too, listen to books when I’m quilting and also when preparing food in the kitchen.
Uncommon Type, written and read by Tom Hanks(yes, the actor), was an enjoyable collection of short stories. I found A Year of Less, written and read by Cait Flanders, amusing and it gave me food for thought. But probably my favorite audiobook has been Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson.

  7. Okay, confession time I don’t listen to audio books. I’ve I wanna to listen something it’s music and if I wanna read I wanna have a ‘real’ book in my hands. Listen to a book is just not me, sorry.

  10. Audiobooks are a wonderful way to sew and read at the same time. I get most of my books through my public library using Libby (Overdrive) or Hoopla. My favorites for 2018 were “Becoming” by Michelle Obama; “Sing Unburied Sing” and “Salvage the Bones” by Jessmyn Ward (both National Book Award Winners;)
and “Saints for All Occasions” by J.Courtney Sullivan.

  13. Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe – great celeb memoir & he’s a good mimic to boot. His impressions of stars he worked with made me laugh out loud. The Cuckoo’s Calling, by Robert Galbraith. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle MacNamara (unfinished true crime). One of my personal faves was The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

  16. I love Audible and would never get to read as many books as I do (which doesn’t compare to you) without it. I enjoyed “11/22/63” by Stephen King; “East of Eden” and “Grapes of Wrath” by Steinbeck; and “No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and The Homefront During WW II” by Doris Kearns Goodwin along with quite a few others in 2018. It was so fun to read/re-read some greats (the Steinbeck books) that I hadn’t thought about since high school.

  19. oh, hey! I rec’d The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis for xmas. I really enjoyed it. The ending was a bit silly but the characters and story were all really good. I was going to order The Address. Seeing it on your list means I’ll order it today. ;p

  22. I have started listening to a Swedish author, Viveca Sten. Her Sandhamm series. Kind of a police detective drama with several recurring characters. They are keeping me sewing way longer than my bedtime! The audible version has been coming with the kindle unlimited download…

  25. Nice to discover your blog. Remember that you can download audiobooks from your public library’s website **for free**! I review them for Library Journal and I’ve been a judge for the annual Audie awards for 20 years….In 2018 I binge-listened to William Kent Krueger’s Cork Corcoran series. I also really enjoyed Susan Orlean’s The Librayr Book.

  28. Lilian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney has the most unusual sounding gal reading it on the CD. It took me a few tracks to get used to her dialect (?). After I could understand her, it was an “easy listen”! A delightful story.
    Have you read/listened to it?
