My summer days with Eva are drawing to a close, with the start of school looming next week. Today I thought we would take a drive to our county's main library. Our town library is pretty pathetic, but the library at the county seat is rather impressive. Definitely up to my university town standards.
Eva was thrilled with the computers that were available for her to use. She immediately sat down and listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. After hearing the story, she was able to put together a sequence of images that detailed the main points of the story. What happened first? The old man offering to trade a magic bean for Jack's cow, or the beanstalk growing up out of the ground towards the sky? Eva loved it and went on to create her own version of the story, complete with her original illustrations. Ah, the magic of the computer age.
Then, she made a fun art project in the arts and crafts area.
And then a boy appeared. "Hi", he said. "What are you doing?" "I'm making something", said Miss Eva, without making eye contact.
"That's nice. But I am doing something way more fun over there at the Lego table", declared the boy.
She rolled her eyes at me, as if to say "Boys. Honestly, they are so full of themselves". She continued to make her art creation, then after a few minutes, casually said to me "Why don't we go check out the other area over there?" So we did.
And there was Michael. They played side by side with the Legos for awhile, chatting like they had known each other for years. At one point he leaned over to her and said "Would you like to be my forever friend?". She winked and gave him a thumbs up and said "Sure!" (I am not kidding here, this was the actual dialog).
He proceeded to ask "Can you come back tomorrow?". She played hard to get and said that would not be possible, but she might be able to return on Friday. "Great", he said. "I'll tell my mom".
So, we came home with three library books, a toilet paper tube she had decorated with feathers, and a date. I'm not sure if we will see Michael again, but does this give you single gals out there any ideas of the possibilities of your local library?

Ah, the sweet innocence of childhood! Great chat up line, too!
Our local library doesn’t have any play areas like this, but the mail library has been closed for updates, is due to reopen soon, and may be as wonderful as the library you and Eva went to. Hope so!
Hugs!

What a lovely, sweet story. A chance meeting at the library & a new forever friend. We could learn a lot from kids acceptance of one another. Thanks for sharing this.

I would be laughing out loud, truly, if I wasn’t sitting at my desk in the middle of an office of people. I completely believe that this was the conversation. I have heard similar ones with my kids. I love that when my daughter goes somewhere new, she is always on the lookout for new friends to meet. Me, I try to avoid eye contact so I can be left alone. So glad she is not me.

I just read this aloud to my husband, barely able to contain the giggles. This is a great story and I hope you save it for Eva to read when she is older – a graduation gift or some other milestone. Sweet as can be. π

Lol that’s so funny! My forever friend! Wouldn’t it be fun if they did end up being bffs for ever? You’ll have to keep us posted, and meet up with him, you can’t break his little heart.
