I spent the end of last week and most of the weekend making tiny little 9 patch blocks. The 9 patches measure 3 1/2", and are used to construct a larger 9 inch block that contains either 4 or five of them. When the larger blocks are combined, they will form a simple Irish Chain type design as shown above. It is a simple old fashioned block, and I am using 1800s reproduction fabrics in blues and browns.
These two blocks are alternated throughout the quilt top to form the chain design. I need 41 blocks with the 5 nine patches in each, and 40 blocks with 4 nine patches in each. 81 large blocks, 365 small nine patch blocks. I will let that sink in a moment.
Here are 200 of them. I have another 100 or so in various stages of completion, and about 60 or 70 more to make. The Double 9 Patch sew along is hosted by The Quilted Moose and is a year long program. I am not dragging it out all that long.
I am doing strip piecing, and have been happily switching off between sewing the strips, ironing the strips, sewing the nine patch blocks and ironing the nine patch blocks. Kind of mindless, Zen sewing. This weekend Craftsy was offering unlimited viewing of any of their instructional videos, so that factored into my sewing plan as well.
Do you all know about Craftsy.com? I thought it was all about sewing and knitting and textile type crafts, but I was wrong. They have all sorts of things you can learn! I spent hours watching quilting, machine appliqué, baking instruction, pasta sauce making, gardening in small containers…The list goes on and on. There were so many subjects to choose from. What a fun opportunity to see what they have to offer. Hope they do it again some time, because the classes are a bit pricey. I have purchased some of their classes in the past, such as Jacqui Gehring's Machine Quilting and it was totally worth it. What a treat to have access to their inventory of classes for free for the weekend.
Did anyone else out there watch any of their classes while they were free? Or have you purchased from them ever? What did you enjoy?

Wow! Your Double 9 Patch is wizard! Well done to make such speedy progress, too.
No, I’ve never used Craftsy but am glad to know more about it.
Hugs!

The 9 patches look great. That quilt is on my list his year to do. I love them. You are way ahead of me! Nope, I will have to try Craftsy. It sounds like a winner.

Since it was such a cold, windy weekend, I watched a few Craftsy classes. I have purchased many machine quilting classes. I have the walking foot classes, a few FMQ classes and one that even has hand/ machine.
I wTched a cooking class and several sewing classes. One was about sewing fleece and another about sewing knits. They had great tips for hemming and sewing. I think cotton is easier! I saw another about making gifted items- small pouches. It’s very interesting to see the different ways that we all sew the same things!

Mindless sewing is great sometimes, heh?? We are getting socked with freezing rain and now snow on top of the ice…no school today here. I’d like to get down to my sewing room today and get some BH sewing done. I think that its been 4 months now since I’ve sewn on that. Time to get it done!!
Have a great week, Nicole.

Your 9 patch quilt is looking great so far. I can see that it could be addictive, making fun combinations of those little blocks. Also, a great way to use up stash (I might have a bit!).
I do know about Craftsy and have purchased a few quilting classes over the years. I thought they were really well done. I watched four more machine quilting classes during the weekend. Always inspiring!

Your 9-patches look great! They’re my favorite block to piece. I’ve heard about Craftsy but have never viewed any of their classes. I’m going to make it a point to check them out soon! Have a good week!

Yes. Enjoyed watching a machine ruler class with Angela Walters so much that I bought it. It is a beginning ruler work class. Like your newest quilt in progress. I love traditional quilting.

Love 9 patches. I signed up for a free Craftsy class a few years ago with Jinny Beyer. The best instruction on hand piecing I could find! There is so much available for free on YouTube, would rather spend my precious dollars on books and fabrics! We drove home from Orem on Saturday and we are so glad to have missed the snowy roads! It’s beautiful to look at from inside a house but not so much from a car.

Love your beautiful new quilt!
I’ve purchased a few Craftsy classed in the past (from Camille Roskelley, Fig Tree, Angela Walters and a few others) and love to watch them. I didn’t purchase one lately though mostly because there are not the designers I would love to have classes from but I really love the ones I have.

I watched a couple of tutorials during the free weekend. I felt inspired to get crafting. I’ve been in a bit of slump when it comes to sewing and crafting. So I felt like it was a good opportunity to get re-inspired.

Dang! I missed the freebie. ;p Yes, I have been really happy with Craftsy classes but they really need to add new classes and new instructors. It was hot when it first started out but designers don’t seem to be working with them anymore.
I love youor tiny 9 patches. There is something wonderful about tiny blocks. ;p

I didn’t know they were offering a free weekend! Little bit of trivia, Craftsy is located here in Denver and that’s where they shoot their videos.

Your little nine patches are wonderful. I like your idea of having them scrappy, but a controlled color palette.

I love Craftsy! Let me recommend Mimi Dietrich’s classes: one on applique and one on finishings. Both excellent. She is a local Baltimore treasure.
