Rhubarb Crisp a Finish

IMG_4319

This sweet little quilt is called Rhubarb Crisp, and is a Jo Morton design.  I found it in a book called The Big Book of Table Toppers.  I made mine one set of stars shorter, because I want to use it on my hall table, and that is a better fit for me.

I really enjoyed making the quilt, and found that the pieces went together pretty perfectly, mostly due to my employment of the Bloc Loc Flying Geese trim tool in the 1 x 2" size.  Those little guys all came out square and flat as can be, and when sewn together lined up straight as arrows.

I am stuck at this point though, because my Janome just isn't up to the task of machine quilting.  That little machine is fairly good, but it doesn't want to do much more than sew two pieces of cotton fabric together.  Every now and then the foot pedal stopped working and I had to use the manual button to sew.  Then it would start up again, causing me great alarm.  Many of you commented that you had heard that foot pedal issues are common with the Janome Gem.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I won't be without my Bernina for more than a week longer.

So, guess how I have been occupying myself while my machine is in the shop?  Hmmm hmmm?   Online shopping of course.  I got the new Kansas Troubles Harvest Hill fat eighth bundle, which I will use for the Moda BlockHeads project.  And something quite came over me, and I found  myself buying a fair amount of Kim Diehl fabric from her Welcome Wagon and Katie's Cupboard collections.  Some online quilt shops (Quilt Expressions) will sell a fat quarter rather than the more common half yard cut, so I took advantage of that.

I have also spent a fair amount of time on Pinterest, and these projects are partly what inspired me to get more Kim Diehl fabric:

  4. Rhubarb twist is really pretty. Looks like fall for sure. great job. I love Kim Diehl stuff all the way around. Almost as much as Jo stuff. I have a hint for you. Fat Quarter Shoppe sells fat eighth bundles which are really nice. You get a taste of everything and at my house I am actually using them instead of adding them to my stash mess. Easier to justify in my little head! Have a nice weekend Nicole.

  16. Darn! I hope your machine is home and humming soon. I hate to say it but you need a solid back-up machine. 🙁
Maybe you can get a used machine for a decent price? Lots of people trade in when they buy new. I have 2 machines plus a 1950s Featherweight. Just a thought….

  22. Love your tabletopper! I just discovered Kim Diehls fabrics last year and feel like I need to catch up on some of her previous collections as well as get her new ones. They have a nice variety to them and definitely play well together. You’ll need to show some stash pictures 😁
