1000 Pyramids Quilt is Finished!

IMG_3059

The 1000 Pyramids Quilt I have been working on for my son is a finish!  He came up with the color scheme (amber and charcoal) as well as the inspiration fabric.  The focus fabric is a lovely collection by Deb Strain called Bee Inspired, which has, as the name suggests, a bee theme.  Previously she had a similar collection called Bee Creative, and we were able to pick up a few pieces of that to add into the mix.  The rest of the fabrics came from my stash, and a number of the blacks/charcoals came from leftovers from my daughter Sara's Log Cabin quilt that I made a year or so ago.

The quilt measures 73 x 71, and is made up of 378 equilateral triangles.  I used a triangle ruler made by Creative Grids, which made the cutting process pretty easy.  I cut 4 1/2" strips and used the triangle ruler to cut out the triangles along the strip.  Sewing the triangles together in rows took some time, as the color and fabric placement is important with this design.  It makes me crazy if two of the same fabrics are too close together, so I had to lay out the pieces for each row under the already stitched rows to avoid that.  And of course, to get the points to line up, you have to pin, pin, pin.  In spite of my fussiness, the process was enjoyable and I was never bored.  I would definitely make this quilt again.  I think the play of lights and darks is really interesting, and find myself staring at the quilt top for minutes at a time.

Ahren decided that he would like the quilt to have a border, and after making several suggestions to him, this is what he chose:

There will be a narrow solid black containment border, and then a wider border of the gold botanical print from the Bee Inspired line. He isn't wild about butterflies, but says he will tolerate them for the quilt border.  I like the idea of a border, as it will expand the overall size of the quilt and make it more bed-size friendly.

We plan to visit him in Ireland this August (!!!!!!!!), so if my wonderful quilter can work her magic by then, it will go in my suitcase to be delivered in person to him.

I am so completely satisfied with this quilt.  It was such fun to work with my son as far as he chose his color palette, fabrics,  and the quilt design.  He was excited to get progress reports every step of the way, and I am going to be sad that this isn't on my design wall….Tear.

  4. Beutiful and amazing quilt Ahren sure will love it! I’m glad he’s okay with the gold butterfly fabric as border it will add a nice touch to the quilt.
And yeah for visiting Ireland! I was there a few years ago and loved it! If you have a chance visit Dublin it’s such a beautiful city. Visit the castle there you allowed to take picture inside (believe me you will love it) and the National Gallery (and the gift shop there they have great items).

  7. I have watched you make this every step along the way. I salivated over the fabric he sent you and absolutely love the 1000 Pyramids quilt that results. I made a much smaller baby quilt version this past fall. I agree with you about the pinning, but those triangles were surprisingly easy to work with. Well done!
Next up will be salivating over your pictures from Ireland!! To say I am envious would be a major understatement! 😉

  25. This one is just beautiful…you and Ahren should team upon more quilts! I would hate to give it away too, but every time he uses it, he will be wrapped in your love. I think that would be enough for me to give it away…especially if you get to hand it to him personally in Ireland!!!
