Slight Detour

My daughter Sara has been strongly urging me to make her a fall table topper.  She is using my old round kitchen table in her home and a square table topper is just the thing to put in the middle of it, along with a seasonal candle or floral arrangement.  You may remember last fall I played around with sewing diamond shapes together and finished off a table runner for myself and one for a friend.  With Sara's request for some fall color for her table, I took a little detour from my Raise the Roof borders.

Diamonds

I used a jelly roll of Sandy Gervais' "Fall Back In Time" to make my diamond shapes, which were cut with a ruler which had a 60 degree line.

After making last September's toppers, I had quite a number of diamond strips left over.  Just enough to make a cute square table topper for Sara.  Since the strips were already pieced it took no time at all to put the table topper together.   I used another piece of Sandy Gervais fabric from another one of her past fall lines to make the pretty gold border on Sara's little quilt.  I love it when the colors in designer's fabric lines work with each other.  I quilted the topper myself, which didn't end up too bad.  It turned out 21 inches square.

One jelly roll resulted in a total of two rectangular table toppers, a third square topper with border, and a zippy bag for cosmetics (you can see the smaller rectangle on the design wall).  For the cosmetics bag, I reduced the size of the diamond shapes as it seemed more in proportion for the smaller finished product.  Here is the tutorial for cutting and piecing the diamond shapes if you are interested:
