Thanks for all the encouraging comments regarding my gigantic stack of unquilted tops. You are so right, I definitely enjoyed picking out the fabrics and piecing those quilts. Most of them anyway. I am going to start sending the ones that deserve it out to be quilted and give them to my loved ones. As for the ten or more quilts that I know I will never spend the money to quilt, I think I would like to donate them to a guild or other group who would.
Do any of you know of such an organization? I would be donating just the completed quilt top, not the backing or batting. If there is a group who would accept a quilt top and finish it so someone somewhere could use and enjoy it, I will send it to them. Let me know if you have any information. I bet there are lots of us with ten year old quilt tops in a bin who would love to let them go into the universe to be appreciated by someone in need.

I follow a blog Jo’s Country Junction. She takes in tops for quilting and uses them for donations to families in crisis or church missions. Check out her blog. Great idea!

I participate with a group of ladies in the making of prayer quilts. We have one divine lady with a long arm machine and who does a limited number on her machine. The size is generally in the 40- 42 inch wide by 60+inches long. The remainder of the quilts we produce(a lot)are stitched with straight lines.Sometimes a larger top is donated and these are sent out and quilted professionally. These larger tops are used for mission work.
Any you could donate would be appreciated.

I do that all the time Nicole because I am the Comfort Quilt chairman of our quilt guild. I myself donated 10-12 over the past year or two, but people make or bring in quilt tops. I match them up with backing (fabric from guild stash) and make the binding. Several members of our guild are stars at taking the “package” and bringing back a completely finished quilted quilt. Kind of a process. Then I deliver them to our designated charities – a children’s home and The Red Cross. This could be a possibility for you. If there is a quilt shop where you live, they will know of a local quilt guild or two and you could deliver the tops, no mailing or $$$ involved. I promise they will love you forever.

The Austin Modern Quilt Guild is working on supplying quilts to help a new homeless housing community. There are a couple hundred beds that need quilts. We would be able to find people to quilt them!

Your local Quilts of Valor or Project Linus would probably both be able to give you some help. Might be nice to keep them somewhat local. Good for you to get these tops out and hugging somebody!

Bren Riddle of Acorn Quilts and Gifts, who designs for Moda, has begun a charity donation group called Quilted Comfort. She will take finished quilts or quilt tops or fabric or cash donations. She has quilters who will quilt the tops and bind them. Then they have a special label they sew into the binding. The quilts all go to a retirement community where the seniors often come after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or just need assisted living support. The comfort the seniors get from our quilts helps tremendously when they transition from one area of the center to another, and some of the seniors come to live at the center with next to nothing. A quilt is given to them to welcome them and let them know they are loved. You can find information about Quilted Comforts from Bren’s website.

Have you considered Quilts of Valor? They are open to donations and have volunteer Longarmers who will quilt and bind the quilts so they can be presented to veterans.

I am hosting the Quilty Orphan Adoption Event right now on my blog. Maybe you can find a good home for a few there.
I am sure there are lots of organizations that would love to finish those up.

Lake County Quilters Guild in Florida. I was in charge of our charity quilts a couple of years ago. I am now the treasurer. We would be happy to finish up those quilts!

There are many lovely organizations mentioned here, but I’d like to make one more suggestion. Remember your local community in the event of any disaster. When someone’s lost everything they own the comfort of a quilt is unspeakable.

There’s an organization in the Bay Area called Blankies for Grownups that gives quilts to (mostly) adults going through medical issues — I’ve given them a ton of unquilted tops and they have volunteers to quilt and finish. Also East Bay Heritage Quilters has an ongoing charity-quilt program; they accept fabric, tops, or finished quilts and donate them to a wide array of organizations.

I think it’s a great and generous idea to donate the quilt tops. I don’t know about an organization but wish you luck to find the right one.

We, the Hugs Ministry of First Southern Baptist Church of Waterford CA, would love to receive some of your quilt tops. We make quilts, pair them with stuffies, and give them to local fire departments to give to kids in crisis situations. Thank you for considering giving to us. God bless, Cory

Nicole, I think you’ve got more than enough places suggested here to give those tops meaningful homes. I applaud your very kind gesture to offer these beautiful quilts to someone you’ll never meet.

Our Dogwood Quilters donate quilts to each new resident of a long-term care facility which is a part of our local hospital. I have donated several over the years and the very senior residents are just thrilled to receive “their” quilts that are used on their beds and wheelchairs – especially during our snowy winter days. How wonderful of you to be so generous to others by sharing your treasures. May God bless you.

What a great idea! In addition to the groups mentioned who take donations, I’ve heard of quilts being given to each new Habitat for Humanity homeowner whose new home is finished, but I don’t know what group does that.
Hugs!

Its been awhile since I’ve looked at my favorite blogs. How are you?!
I wish I had the stack of quilt tops that you have made…seems all my time is behind the longarm instead of piecing. Right?
Listen, have you considered turning a few of those tops into backings? It is a thought.
Also, I’d love to be able to donate to the cancer center where hubby received his chemo treatments. I’d of course supply the backing/batting and the frosting! *wink* Speaking of…hubby finally gets his chemo port out tomorrow! Woo Hoo! That thing is such a reminder of what all we went through and to finally know it can be gone is awesome!
OK…let me go read your other post to catch up!
