I am just eeeaaasssiiinnnggg back into sewing by making up a little Frivols project. I dived into Frivols #5, because I liked the French General fabrics. Never mind that I haven't done Frivols #1, 2, 3 or 4. I will get to them one of these days.
This is the primary pattern for Frivols #5, which I decided not to make. Each Frivol comes with a little card offering an alternate block that one might consider using the fabric with instead. I liked the look of the block on the card in the photo at the top of the post, which is called Maple Leaf. The little card gives two different block size options as well—4 1/2" finished and 6" finished. I decided to go with the 4 1/2". No setting instructions are given, so I will have to figure that out on my own.
These are the flying geese units required for each block. Right about now I am wishing I had opted to make the 6 " block. Very tiny pieces. After some experimentation, I started pressing all the seams open and that helped quite a bit to achieve more square blocks.
Not sure how many blocks I will make. I started out with nine of them. I think the blocks are cute, and will keep you posted as to how it goes. Baby steps.

I love the blocks you’re making! the frivols pattern looks a bit boring to me I’m not a ‘just squares’ fan.

I wasn’t too enamored of this Frivols pattern but I love the blocks you’re making! I may have to copy yours!

I like the Maple Star block more than the other pattern with all of those squares, too. Oof! Those ARE tiny block parts. Well done!
You know, your 4.5″ blocks could be used for a doll quilt or small wall quilt and you could begin again and make the 6″ blocks. Just a thought.
That Maple star block has similar elements to the Ribbon Star pattern I got from Quilts of Valor and am making 12″ blocks. The side center units are different tho.
Hugs!

Great minds think a like! Yes! I’ve skipped right by the first frivols that I’ve collected & jumped right into using the French General one. Especially like what you are making! Happy New Year!

love that block!!! so pretty! i’ve tried pressing seams open and i got all frustrated. i find it hard to not get my fingers burned by steam and i found pressing seams open requires constant fiddling with the fabric to actually get the iron tip in between the seams. not sure what i’m doing wrong but i gave it up. ;p

Adorable! I am tempted to get that Frivol, and likely will do it anyway, but I am ordering the Fig Tree one this week (and I still have Frivol #1 waiting patiently). I actually like the cover pattern and will probably follow that pattern, but your blocks are turning out super cute! Thanks for continuing to blog. I haven’t had a chance to keep mine up to date.

I’m getting ready to make a quilt with mini flying geese blocks this week-end at retreat. I’m taking my tiniest Fit To Be Geese ruler & hoping for the best! I’ll keep pressing seams open as an option for sure!

Love your new block so much more than the featured one. My Frivol boxes are unwrapped and sitting on a shelf, so I had no idea there was another block option inside that could be used with the included fabric! Now I think I’ll go rip them open and see what my options are! Thanks, again, Nicole!
