Strange Days

I suppose stranger things have happened, but this is one for the books.

I have a nephew who lives with my elderly father.  (Not Grandpa Larry, that is my husband's father).  This arrangement has worked out splendidly for all concerned.  My nephew has a nice place to live and my father has a companion and is able to continue to live in his own home.

So, last weekend, my nephew went camping.  He got up in the dark and managed to step in a hole, fall down and break his ankle in three places.  A really bad break.  He had to be hospitalized and have surgery on the ankle, which involved various pins and plates.  He is going to be laid up for quite some time.

My sister, (nephew's mother) was with him for the surgery.  Late in the evening she returned to our dad's house where she planned to spend the night, as it was closer to the hospital where her son was.  She came in the house and found Dad on the floor.

With a broken leg.

Dad had to be taken to the hospital and was there for a couple of days.  Which is where I have been and the reason for no blog posts.  He has now been released to a rehab center where he will stay for some time.  He had so been looking forward to Thanksgiving, which was also his 90th birthday.

I am not sure what will happen when Dad is released to go home.  With the two men laid up with broken legs and neither able to do much of anything unassisted, we are probably going to have to hire a nurse or take turns staying with them.

I think I will be glad when this year is over.  I want a do-over.

  1. Goodness me! What an unexpected and unwelcome turn of events but am glad that both men are doing well under the circumstances.
How fortunate that your sister went to your father’s house when she did. That is a little miracle in itself and a real cause for thanksgiving.
    Bless everyone’s hearts!
Wishing your Dad a belated Happy 90th Birthday!
    Big hugs!

  4. Geez, you can’t catch a break (no pun intended) this year! Hope all works out for everyone. Speedy recovery for both of them!

  7. So sorry to read about both broken bones! (My mother is 91 and I am taking her to dr this afternoon, a follow-up to a fall.) Sad that your father missed Thanksgiving. Happy Belated Birthday!

  10. What a scary Thanksgiving week your family had! It’s so lucky that your sister went to stay at your Dad’s when she did! I’m sure you’re aware of the alert button necklaces, but does your dad wear one? It might be something to consider when he goes home whether anyone is there with him or not. You can still celebrate his belated milestone 90th birthday along with a ‘welcome home.’ Wishing you a quiet week ahead.

  13. I agree with the other comments, what a lot to deal with. I hope they both recover well. Belated Happy Birthday to your Dad! I hope is he doing all right in rehab. It is very hard to suddenly be somewhere they would really rather not be. Blessings to all of you!

  16. That is very strange news and not good either. I hope they both mend and are able to get back to their living together. Not good news at all. I am so sorry for both of them.

  25. Wow! What a time you have had. I said the same thing about 2014. Both my husband and I were in accidents that totaled our cars and I broke my ankle. I was glad to have that year done. 2015 has been good to us and I hope 2016 will be good for you.

  37. Wow what are the odds of them both having broken legs and missing Thansksgiving. Mine and my sons birthday were on Thanksgiving also and I wish I had a doover as well. Sending happy thoughts, and hugs your way.

  43. What a difficult situation with the recent medical problems. Am concerned we haven’t heard from you on your blog, but understand completely. I know the season is so busy without attendant medical issues. Just thinking about you and hoping you are getting that extra cooking, shopping, done that we all have on our plate this time of year, and that the medical issues are sorting themselves out. In other words, hang in there. Miss you.
