I have been enjoying working with Sweetwater's holiday collection "Holly's Tree Farm". I got in a bit of sewing last week on two different projects. The one I like best of the two is "Paganini", a Schnibbles pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. Paganini is a great pattern with three or four different variations, which are fun to play with. If you look at my header, you can see another layout choice.
What I like about the layout in the photo above is that each block calls for eight different fabrics, along with some white. I think the fabrics are shown up nicely and since the block is wreath shaped, it goes well with the holiday theme of the fabric. The addition of the white fabric corner squares seems to further set off the cuteness of the colored fabrics. I need to make a few more blocks so that the finished project is a total of 16 blocks. Perfect table topper for a square or round table. Of course you could make this three by four blocks for a rectangular table or counter top.
This is the second project that I have used the same fabric collection. This pattern is called Drop, a Little BItes pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. I actually think this little quilt looks like a hot mess. I wish I had added a lattice of white or perhaps used a white fabric in the first round surrounding the center square in each block. To me, this is just a jumble of fabrics, each one calling out to be looked at, and causing the eye a good deal of confusion. "Look at me!" "No, look at me!" "No ME". I want to run away.
I have actually made Drop previously, and wisely used a cream color background for the first round surrounding the center squares, and also separated each block with a lattice of cream. Don't you agree that this makes for a much more cohesive looking finished result? Those pretty French General fabrics are working nicely together and each one can have a turn to be appreciated.
You win some, you lose some. When I finish Paganini, I am going to try Drop again, this time with a Kate Spain holiday collection and some crisp white Bella solid.

Perhaps on the “Drop” you could just take apart, add some sashing and corner squares that were all alike. Great fabrics for the season. Love all the things you make.

Ok I just spent some time looking at it enlarged and I think it is just fine. Busy but fine. We are too hard on ourselves. Look at it as a learning experience. I think a lot of people would love to have it including me!

Yep, your French General Drop is a more sophisticated quilt. Paganini is looking great, tho. Take care!!

I like your little Drop that has no sashing and think of it as the happy pretty jumble that accompanies Christmas despite any and all efforts to be organized. Looks great to me!
Drop with the sashing is calmer and quietly pretty.
Paganini looks like fun to make. In fruit colors it might look like Lifesavers.
I’m on to another table runner binding today.
Hugs!

Love your Paganini and your little Drop, too. Okay, it’s a bit busy but it’s fun and who says that every quilt needs to be sophisticated? Perhaps if you add a calm border your little Drop will be your next most loved quilt:-)

I think both quilts look great! Google Economy Block quilt images and you’ll see a bunch of similar quilts like drop and they look just fine.

You can’t go wrong with Hollys Tree Farm line. I’ve seen so many beautiful quilt tops made from it to include one I made too! Your Drop is busy but honestly would look darling hanging out of a basket for a pop of color. I also think if you want to take apart the blocks adding sashing it may calm it? If that makes sense.

My daughter and I have the same discussion, I like things very busy and hardly ever use white fabric as a sashing. She thinks my quilts are waaay to busy and she would agree with you about resting the eye. I really think it is all a matter of taste and perspective. So I think it’s beautiful and wouldn’t change a thing, I can understand your preference. You are a wonderful quilter!
