I won't say I finished my Bow Tie quilt. A more precise statement would be that I ended it. Those three inch finished blocks were fun to make, but my goodness, there were so many of them. 324 of them in my quilt. And I was done. The finished quilt is about 66 inches square, and will be a great lap quilt. This winter, when the rain is pelting down and the temperatures are low, this will be the quilt to grab when reading, watching tv or just taking a nap.
I got the idea for this quilt from a sew along that Primitive Gatherings Southern California is doing. They are doing two inch finished blocks (or is it one inch?), but I knew I could never muster the courage to tackle that size. I sized up to 3 finished and really did enjoy making the blocks. There are a lot of ways to lay out the blocks, and I chose the fairly simple "Barn Raising" pattern.
If you make a Bow Tie quilt, you know you are going to have a great stash buster quilt on your hands. I used all charm squares for my quilt. I had a wonderful collection of charm squares that I bought from Primitive Gatherings at the Road to California show, and some that were given to me by a friend. Now that the quilt is done, I can see that I need to replenish the browns and the blues in my stash, as they were pretty much used up in this project. Someday in my future there will be another Civil War charm square quilt.
The border fabric I used was in my stash. It was a Thimbleberries print that had clovers in dark green burgundy and gold. It is a great print and it seemed to work just fine as the border for this quilt, really picking up the golds in particular.
What ever happened to Thimbleberries? Years ago, I did enjoy purchasing some of their fabric, but never joined the cult like following they enjoyed back in the day. Were you a Thimbleberries fan? Do you miss them? They had so many people who worshipped them. I have a lot of their books, which have many patterns that are suitable for beginning quilters. Too simplistic? What do you think led to the demise of their company? Did Lynette Jensen just need to retire or had the representative style of the company just seen its day?

Applause!!!! Your wee Bow Tie quilt is a delight and those borders are perfect! What shall you name it?
Thimbleberries is gone? I, too, have many of Lynette Jennings’ books and some fabric but many of those darker fabrics just didn’t float my boat. Since I’ve been mostly living off my stash for 3 years and the LQS shop that carried lots of Thimbleberries fabrics closed 8 months ago, I hadn’t noticed it was gone. I imagine there are still plenty of quilters who still love those Thimbleberries colors.
What’s next for you?
Hugs!

Holy cats, you’re right. Thimbleberries is no more. I found an on-line quilt shop announcement from summer, 2013, that Lynette Jenson has retired. How about that? She’s been there since I was a baby quilter and it’s strange to consider the quilting world without Thimbleberries but it seems I’m late to that party.
More hugs!

Wow! That’s absolutely spectacular! I love the fabrics you used, the setting and of course who doesn’t love bow ties? I don’t know that I’ve seen a bow tie quilt set in the Barn Raising setting, but I love it and will seriously consider it when it comes time for me to piece together my bow tie blocks. I’m unfamiliar with Thimbleberries … but what I’ve seen, the fabrics remind me a bit of Kansas Troubles??

I love your bow tie quilt, and the barn raising layout seems perfect for it. I am so glad you mentioned it, too, because I am putting together a boat load of HSTs in that same layout and I was having a hard time describing it. Haha! I knew there had to be a term for it! 😉
I remember the first Thimbleberries booklet I bought. It was before she unified her books with that “brand” that made her famous. I have tubs full of her fabrics and a shelf full of her books. Whenever I want to make a quilt In a hurry, I go to her patterns. She has the clearest instructions, and they are all so timeless.

Wonderful setting for your bow ties. I liked the Thimbleberries look too and have one book. I think Lynette Jennings is still around but as styles have changed, her homey look has waned in popularity.

Love this quilt. You did a super job. I think I probably bought some fabric in the past but it wasn’t an obsession like my Jo Morton stash. van’t wait to see your next finish!

Fantastic finish!
I liked Thimbleberries fabric, too, and I think I still have a bit of it in my stash. I also love Kansas Troubles because of the deep, rich colors.

Love your bowtie quilt! It inspires me to want to make one. But 3″ blocks? Hmmmm, not sure if I want to tackle that. We’ll see. Thanks for sharing. I love reading your blog!

Very nice bow tie quilt!! I don’t know what happened to Thimbleberries, but I really liked their fabrics, both the colors and the quality of it. It also played nicely with other things I had. I believe I may still have a few pieces of it.

Your bow tie quilt looks fantastic!
Didn’t know that Thmbleberries is gone because the colors are not mine but perhaps it has to do with the fact that there’re a lot of younger quilters and we like lighter and brighter colors a bit more.

Love that Thimbleberries border! I just used it for backing for 2 small quilts for my veterinarian to use. Lynette Jensen retired. Luckily I have tubs and tubs of her fabric. And I agree, her directions are easy to follow.

Great addition in your repretoire of quilts! It is classic and gorgeous Nicole! Even better being so little! I like the setting too. It adds to it’s character.
I only had one Thimbleberries book. But they were a great influence and forerunner in the industry along with Fons and Porter and Ms. Quilt In A Day.

Absolutely gorgeous, if only I did not have such a long list of others (and more time) I would love to make this quilt.

Another awesome quilt Nicole. You are an inspiration! I just sent a quilt to be “frosted” by Mary (first time ever doing that) she did an outstanding job – it is on her instagram – quilted in elegant orange peel – check it out!

Beautiful quilt! I love scrappy quilts with tons of different fabrics. It will be fun to remember making all those blocks while snuggled up in the quilt in cooler weather.

I have a lovely hand pieced bowtie from a family friend. I love it! However it is tied with crochet thread, not quilted. Guess they just wanted their quilts to be done so they could use them! But it is still a treasure. Yours is beautiful and inspiring!
