Time to put the red white and blue away and get out the sunflowers and summery colors. This pretty Schnibbles pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. fits the bill. It is called Jersey Girl and I made it with a fabric collection called Honky Tonk, which somehow seems fitting. The beautiful custom quilting on it is by Mary Flynn of Quilt Hollow.
As I write this, I have Beer Can Chicken roasting in the oven and things feel nice and summery around the house. I bought a nice big cantaloupe at the market this morning and cut it up for dinner as well. I snitched a couple of pieces and it tastes like—-nothing. Nothing at all. How can that be? It is just so wrong. I remember when I was a little girl, Grandma Agnes would buy farm stand local melons and they were so sweet we would have them for dessert with a scoop of ice cream. If I close my eyes I can smell them. Where did all the good melons go?

Nice table topper! I always sniff my rockmelons (as they’re called in Australia) and unless they smell great, it’s not worth buying them!

Those big yellow flowers look lovely with your table topper! I know what you mean about the melons – so disappointing. I find the same thing with strawberries – they look so good in the package, but no flavour

Love that table topper. Watermelon is that way, too. I can’t remember the last time when I had a really good, flavorful watermelon. 🙁

We are having the same issues with melons here in south Florida. The watermelons are not red, they are a weird peachy and yellow color inside and also taste like nothing. Very disappointing.
Maybe try wrapping your cantaloupe in prosciutto…at least there will be a little flavor.

Jersey Girl is wonderfully summery and that custom quilting is lovely! Well done to all!!
We’ve grown Ambrosia Cantaloupe for the last several years and they are delicious, flavorful, and sweet. They’re really easy to grow, too, and one vine gives you several cantaloupe that mature at different times so you’re not overwhelmed with too many melons at once. DH’s grandmother taught us all that a ripe melon’s end should feel like the end of your nose when you push in a little bit.
I’m winding several bobbins this morning and am making a pitcher of iced tea.
Hugs!

P.S. … try to get your fresh watermelons, cantaloupes, and strawberries at a farmer’s market and you’re likely to find better fruit.

Rocky Ford, Colorado — that’s where all of the good melons are — they are world famous. BTW, love the quilt! Sally

Sadly most melons are picked before they are ripe, and the just don’t taste right.
That said, Sally is correct that Rocky Ford, CO melons are very tasty.

Your Jersey Girl Schnibble is so summer-y & pretty!!
I’m going to stop at a farm stand on my way to sewing group tomorrow morning. If history repeats itself, Powell, WY is where you find the.best.cantaloup.ever!!! I’ll let you know! 😎

Love your table topper!
It’s not only melons but generally all fruits. I think it’s because of all the gen-manipulating things they’re doing and the good old fruit varieties just vanished. The’re just a few apple sorts you find in the grocery stores but no more the good old ones … it’s probably the some with melons. Sad but true:-(

We discovered Tuscany cantaloupes at the grocery store. They are wonderful.

We wait for the PA melons to ripen, they are deeply ridged on the outside but I don’t know of their names or varietes. I just look for the ridges (kind of like an acorn squash). My grandfather used to eat melon with vanilla ice cream too!

You need to sniff the “butt” of the cantaloupe to determine if it is ripe. If it doesn’t give off a good cantaloupe smell it isn’t ripe and you haven’t a prayer of it having any taste.
The table topper is a stunner!

I agree with the commenters that the best cantaloupe are at farmer’s markets/farm stands. If you have a local Whole Foods, I have had very good luck there.
Love your summery Jersey Girl and centerpiece. Beautiful!

Jersey Girl is just beautiful and makes me want to find that pattern again in my sewing room.
We get our best local melons in August but I can’t wait, so I’ve been buying watermelon at the store. The seedless watermelons have been pretty good so far but I have no idea where they ship from.

I buy my cantaloupes and let them sit a few days on the counter. When the house smells like cantaloupe it’s time to cut into them. Juicy good!
