Gypsy Girl

Just got the binding on this little quilt for Eva's room last week.  I've had some requests to show more of it, so here you go.

I made the quilt back in 2009–here is a link to my post on making it with all the pattern information.

I absolutely loved making this quilt.  I used a wonderful pattern called Gypsy Girl by Heather Mulder Peterson, from her book Fat Quarter Five.  The book is out of print, but Heather is selling the pattern on her website:  http://ankastreasures.bigcartel.com/product/gypsy-girl  The fabrics were mostly from a couple of collections by American Jane–Cherries Jubilee and Apple Pie.  Quilt calls for 21 fat quarters and 2 1/4 yards of background fabric. It finishes at a great size for a twin sized bed: 69" by 83".

I finished the quilt, let it sit forever waiting to be quilted, and finally had it quilted awhile back.  I had an idea that it would be a great quilt for Eva once she had a "big girl bed".  Now that I packed away her All Wrapped Up Christmas quilt, it seemed time to get it out.  I climbed up on the step ladder, pulled it down from the high shelf in my closet where it was all folded up, and what do you suppose I discovered?  I hadn't sewn the binding down.  Typical.

I sat down in a chair, put a movie on, and got the binding sewn on New Year's Day, while my husband watched a football game in the other room.  Five years in the making, finally this adorable quilt is on a bed.  Sometimes it just works out that way.

Here is a photo of the blocks in the making.  You can see better how they are constructed.  You make a simple block, cut it into quarters and put a lattice in between the sections.  Great effect.  This is an easy fun quilt to make, and it goes together quickly.  Seriously, you can get so many different looks depending on what kind of fabric you use.  I would definitely make this quilt again (I don't say that very often) and encourage you to to purchase the pattern.

  13. Very cute! She’s sure to love all the fun prints and colors. I love Heather’s designs and have a fat quarter stack of her fabric lingering too long. Living Large is the quilt I want to make!

  16. Very interesting pattern. I love the quilt and yes, I’m sure it would look very different depending on the fabrics used.
My Sailor son asked for a quilt for his rack on the ship. He still owes me dimensions but I do know that it needs to be a bit smaller than a twin. I’m wondering if I could make a slightly smaller version of Gypsy Girl for that purpose.

  19. I just got in from a great retreat & want to say I love your Gypsy Girl! I made it several years ago in pastels & I almost didn’t recognize it in the pretty American Jane fabrics! It looks so sweet on Eva’s big girl bed! I also want to mention a big thanks to Jeanna (comment above) for her son’s service to our country!

  22. Brilliant quilt. I love the look of it. I made one of Heathers patterns that was constructed in basically the same manner, except the block was slice on the diagonal twice and the sashing inserted. It was very difficult to get all the crosses to meet exactly, so I took the seam allowance up to 3/8″ and it seemed to work. The finished quilt looks great, and you can’t tell the crosses are not exactly right. I think this quilt would be much easier, seeing that the block does not need to be cut diagonally. I may just have to get the pattern.
