Have any of you heard of the Flowering Snowball block? It has been all the rage on Instagram and Flickr. A blogger named Molly Flanders Makerie started up a Sew Along, and you just would not believe how cute those quilts are. Check out the link for her wrap up and see all the beautiful projects folks made. She also has tutorials and all sorts of tips for making the block.
I ordered a plastic template from Baycreek Quilting Templates, and made the block shown above. My girlfriend Lisa gave me some Kafe Fasset yardage, all in pinks, and I thought it would be adorable in the Flowering Snowball pattern. I ordered the 12 inch template set, and it turns out that I didn't have the template going on the straight of grain for the fabric when I cut it out. It wouldn't fit on the straight of grain for the fabric cuts I had.
If you are observant, you will see that I have my fabrics reversed in my block. The shield shaped piece is supposed to be the print, and the smaller template is supposed to be used for the background. I think if you made your quilt with the fabrics reversed, it would still be very pretty, but with a different design element obviously.
I felt I wanted to make the block as intended, so, I went online and ordered the 10 inch template set.
This is how it is supposed to be laid out and cut, and as you see, this 10" size is going to fit just fine. I can't wait to start cutting on this new project, but it is going to have to wait until my next free day!
I am greatly enamoured of curved piecing lately, and found this gentle curve to be a breeze to sew. I did pin, in the middle and on each end of the sections while stitching.

I have this on my to-do list too, after seeing it on Hyacinth Quilt Designs. Not sure what fabric to use, though, and am intrigued by your choice of Kaffe Fassett. I’ll be following your progress.

What a charming block! You may yet inspire me to try this gentle curve piecing.
Love the quilts on Mollie’s blog, too, so thanks for that link.’
Hummmm … if I were to sew curves, my usually sweet DH could no longer tease me about avoiding curves in my sewing. That would be nice!
Hugs!

I think it will be gorgeous with Kaffe Fassett prints. I had a peek at Molly Flanders Makerie and I do prefer the effect of the shield shape being made from the print. Looking forward to seeing yours come together.

Ordering templates NOW, Nicole! You’ve inspired my faltering mojo. I’ve never used templates, so a couple of questions, please? (1) Do you cut with a rotary cutter directly around the template or do you trace the shape and cut it out with scissors? (2) If you cut directly, do you cut one layer at a time or more than one layer? So happy you wrote this post. It is just what I needed . . . .

You are going to love the whole process of making this quilt! I love mine, I made it scrappy and 100 inches square.
Not all of my petals were cut on the straight of grain as I was using scraps and put the template on anyway it would fit and I was just careful not to stretch them and they turned out fine.
Mary at Molly Flanders did a great job of showing how to piece the block.
Have fun Nicole.
