Urban Winter aka “Piece of Cake”

IMG_1222

Since I was frustrated with my progress on Metro Hoops, I decided to try a simpler pattern, without any corner triangles to line up.  I pulled some pretty lavender blues from my stash and started cutting pieces for the Urban Winter pattern, also by Sew Kind of Wonderful, using the Quick Curve Ruler.

Oh.my.goodness.  Did this pattern ever go together quickly and accurately!  This is definitely something a beginner to curved piecing could tackle with success.  I started this project on Thursday, and got most of my pieces cut out.  I sewed quite a bit on Friday and Saturday, and have finished all my blocks and have started sewing my rows together.

Now that is instant gratification!

If you are new to curved piecing, and are interested in trying out the Quick Curve Ruler, this may be a great pattern choice to start out with.  I had no issues with these units whatsoever.  There is nothing to line up, no fiddling with seams, and everything goes together like a cinch.  I tell you, by the time I had finished half these curved units, I was a total pro at it.  Out of 60 blocks, only one of them turned out too wonky to use.

Can't you imagine some custom quilting in those large cream colored squares?

How are the rest of you doing with your Quick Curve Ruler projects?  Chime in and let us know how things are going.

  1. It looks wonderful, I haven’t made Urban Winter yet-will have to–instant gratification is always a plus!
Custom quilting would be fabulous, but even just close straight lines would be cool too!

  4. It doesn’t look that easy. Very pretty and great quilting spots. I love your determination not to let that ruler win!

  10. The lavender blues are really beautiful but I can imagine this in a number of monochromatic colorways or scrappy–modern or traditional. What a versatile pattern! How fun to know that it comes together so easily. When I am ready to attempt curves, this is the one I will start with! Wondering if all the square blocks are the same fabric?

  13. Love it! Boy you’re fast even with the injured finger! I’m thinking how pretty that would look with some scrappy modern prints, or the darker background like in the picture. Must try it out, if I do will send you a pic 🙂
