Woo Hoo! Kaleidoscope is all sewn together. All that is left is to add a containment border and an outer border. I am so relieved that this quilt came together after all. I had so much fun making it. I will share my thoughts on two methods for making Kaleidoscope blocks later this week.
My big mistake with this project was sewing the corner triangles on wrong. The Kaleidoscope Smart Plate Ruler instructions were clear, there was even a diagram, I just didn't see it. There were like six separate sheets of instructions, and the whole thing confused me, so I egotistically thought I could do my own thing and all would be well. Wrong.
I used the sew a corner square on/flip/trim method of adding those corner triangles, and that was not the way to do it. I was supposed to actually cut triangles and sew them on. All is well, the mistake was completely fixable, the blocks are just a bit smaller than I originally intended. Once the outer border is added, the quilt will be a decent lap size.
I was so worried about potentially wasting all that gorgeous grey and orange Denyse Schmidt fabric, I did a massive internet search and found some more to replenish what I used. Whew. I feel lilke a fabric hoarder.
This was a crazy sewing weekend, I tell you. Look what I started!
Crumbler! More Denyse Schmidt fabric. Florence and Ansonia.
And Deer Valley Plates! Deer Valley is an old Joel Dewberry group. Sure wish I had more of this. I think that spotty plate on the lower right might not make the cut. It troubles my eye with its randomness.
More on all this tomorrow.

It looks GREAT! I love the colors. You more than compensated for the first little “faux pas”.

Hi, I asked you a short while ago about how you had solved your lighting problem. I wanted to share with you what I found. I went to the sewing show in Worcester, MA. last weekend and came across CSCountrysichin booth. They have a small light that you can attach to your machine. It sticks on. I sew on a Janome 11000 and I placed it right where I needed a little extra lighting shining down to the right the he needle. I love it! Their web site is cscountrystitchin.com and it’s call Sew Bright Light. Claire Bolton, Ct

What a save! Kaleidoscope looks good. And what a lot of sewing you did this weekend. I love the crumbler — so simple, and such great colors/fabric. And plates, too. Must have been a wonderful weekend. Carry on!

Wow, it came out great! I’m so glad you figured out how to save it. I am looking forward to your thoughts on making this block because this kind of quilt is in my future.

Oh I am so glad that it worked for you! So sad when you think you have wasted not only your precious fabric, but your time as well! I have been wanting to make one of these. Thanks for working out the bugs for us all! 🙂

I’m so glad you got your blocks to work. The colors are just beautiful. I hate that feeling when you’ve put so much effort into something and it just won’t work. Your persistence has paid off!

You must be so happy you stuck with it. It turned out great even if it is a little smaller than you originally planned. I like the fresh colors in it.

I have been away from blogland for a month and wow what a lot I have missed!!! So glad your Kaleidoscope drama was sorted out – it is a very, very beautiful quilt. So happy that people were able to offer advice on how to fix it – I wouldn’t have had a clue. It is a real gem – can’t wait to see it all quilted up and finished. Beautiful x
