Experimenting

003

The sewing room is pretty much of a disaster right now because I am experimenting with the Kaleidoscope blocks.  I have sure made a number of blocks wrong!  I keep trimming off the corners that I am supposed to attach the corner squares to.  I want my 12 piece blocks with the corner squares to form a X shape with the grey fabric.  If I cut the grey off and attach the corner squares to the other color I end up with kind of an Iron Cross shape with the greys, which I don't want because the grey in the alternate blocks forms the Iron Cross shape.  The block on the left is incorrect, the block on the right is correct.  Is this something I should be worrying about?  Am I wrong to try to insert some order into this project?

The brown and orange block in the background is all wrong in a couple of ways, as are several more you don't see.  I am thinking I will have enough left over "wrong" blocks to make a quilt for Ozzie.  Or maybe a king sized charity quilt.  Or maybe a circus tent.

Here are some blocks I have made that might be working ok.  Check out the fabric that I am playing with though, isn't it cool?  A couple of Denyse Schmidt collections, and Comma by Zen Chic.

Truly, I do not know if this is working for me at all. I feel a bit overwhelmed.  Would it be better to just stick with two colors?  Or keep adding in more?  Someone told me once that if a color doesn't seem to be working in your quilt, just add more of it, and everything will be fine.  Will it be better after I make about 24 more blocks?  Ack.  I don't know about this one.  And the fabrics are so pretty too.  I hope I haven't wasted them.  I am struggling.

Thanks for all your advice regarding the asthma meds/situation yesterday.  I have ordered my meds from Canada in the past, and it is much cheaper, but you sure have to keep on top of ordering in a timely manner because it can take over three weeks to get them, and of course if you run out during that time, you risk an attack.

You know who was super helpful to me?  My pharmacist.  He suggested I research insurance companies, and base my selection on whether they cover my asthma drugs.  I did that, found a company who covers my drugs, has a low deductible, and think I will go with it.  Seems so logical, doesn't it?  Spoke to a rep at the insurance company who was so nice.  After I meet my deductible, the co-pay will be just under $40. How about that?

  1. I say keep going — I think it will work out to be a good quilt. I find there’s always a stage where you doubt that it will come together–just have to work through that.

  4. I agree you should keep going on the Kaleidoscope quilt blocks, adding more colors, setting aside the Oops blocks, and perhaps making a mock-up block of paper or finding an excellent tutorial so you can follow those instructions before cutting fabrics.
Years ago I found a tutorial for joining binding ends and I still get that tutorial on-screen before I cut and sew the ends of binding.
Had to chuckle at the circus tent reference. Methinks you’d make lots of donation quilts before you’d have room to put a whole circus tent together. But when you’re on a roll, it might just happen!
Cheers for helpful and knowledgeable pharmacists!!
    Hugs!

  7. I’m so glad that you found a better solution to the high meds expense problem. Now you can stay healthy and have a bit more of a fabric budget!
Perhaps it would be helpful to sketch the quilt layout on paper and color in the parts to get the look you want. Then you’d have a “plan” to follow when cutting and piecing your blocks. I do love the colors you’ve chosen.

  10. This quilt looks confusing to me. I can understand why you are pulling your hair out. Is that pink and white block on the bottom row correct? I’m trying to understand it. The fabrics are super cute though!

  13. This is an off the subject question.
Did you ever decide on a different lighting system for your sewing machine? I have a Janome 11000 and I am searching for something that would give me more light, (as you are looking at the machine), on my right side.
    Any suggestions.

  16. This is also off subject. I too would like to know how you ended up solving the lighting problem for your machine. I also have a Janome.
So glad you got you are going to be able to deal with your meds in a less expensive fashion. I really rely on my pharmacist for so much information about meds my hubby and I take and on OTC drugs as well.

  19. *giggle* a circus tent? I think they will come together as you make more. Walk away from it for a bit and then come back to it. Maybe make a different little quick project while it ‘simmers’? Have a happy weekend!

  22. I think kaleidoscope implies lots of colour, so I think you should keep going if you can, and add lots of colours with the white. Those Denyse Schmidt fabrics look fabulous together.

  25. Yeah to the new insurance. It’s a lot of work living in the US. You have to research everything and then stay on top of things. In Canada, our choices are limited so it’s much easier in some ways. LOVE your blocks, keep making them and you will have a super fun quilt with great fabrics!

  28. Any more you need a degree in economics and business to figure out the insurance industry! You are fortunate to have a pharmacist that cares.

  34. My vote on this quilt is that you have a gut instinct on this and that you need to listen to that. The fabrics ARE beautiful. Happy sewing and have a great weekend.

  37. Wonderful to read you’ve found some help with lower costs on your medication! That pharmacist is worth his weight in gold (or fabric!!) I agree with Heartsdesire above. ‘Kaleidoscope’ does imply lots of colors so keep going…it WILL come together the more you add!

  46. Hope you are feeling on top of it now with the new medications.
Lovely fabric but not a so happy journey. If you are having problems with this I think those of us way less experienced should avoid the temptation. Had a giggle with the “circus tent” too.
    Good luck with it.
