Lesson Learned

Asthma inhalers

Oh dear.  I have been down for the count the past couple of days for sure.  Are any of you familiar with the objects pictured above?  They are commonly prescribed asthma drugs.  The round one on the left is called Advair.  There are no generic versions available (there used to be, but the FDA took away their approval).  It costs $300 a  month.  Yes, you read that right.  The object on the right is called Proventil (or albuterol). It costs around $100 a  month.  Most insurance companies will cover the Proventil, which is "an emergency inhaler".  Meaning you take it when you are wheezing and can't get a breath.  My co-pay is around $40 once I hit my deductible.  Which takes a long time to hit.

The Advair is a powdery steroid that keeps the lungs and bronchial tubes dialated so you can breathe.  You are supposed to take it twice a day.  Without fail.  It keeps the tubes open, the air flowing and it helps keep the asthma attacks down to a minimum.  Most insurance companies do not cover this drug.  If you find one that does, the co-pay is around $100.  Better, but whew, still kinda steep.

Do you see where I am going with this?

I have a hard time paying $400 for asthma meds every month.   I used to have a great insurance plan that covered everything.  No more.  I have insurance, of course, but it is a stretch to meet that deductible and pay full price for those meds until I do.  I hate spending my limited discretionary funds on medicine.

So, I haven't been taking the $300 Advair.  You may recall I chose to buy around $250 worth of happy fabrics this month with my disposable income.  Umm hmm.  I know.

And I ended up in the hospital emergency room yesterday morning with one of the worst asthma attacks I have ever had.  I couldn't breathe, thought I was going to pass out, could not talk, was clutching my chest, wheezing so loud I could be heard three rooms away.  Very dramatic.  The staff in the ER was quite impressed.

I try to keep things somewhat real here on this blog, and this is obviously bordering on Too Much Information.  I am very human and occasionally make errors in judgment.  This was one of those errors.  Don't lecture me, I get it.  I'm an idiot.  Don't be like me.

So, I am mending my ways, doing the sensible thing, paying the piper and taking those darn asthma meds as prescribed.

  1. Nicole, we all make judgment errors at some stage. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You are right though, your meds must come first and our health really needs to take priority. Hope you are feeling much better now.

  4. Hi Nicole – don’t be too hard on yourself! I hope you’re feeling better and come up with some workable strategies for keeping your asthma under control. I’m a nurse, but I hate taking medication, so I would probably be guilty of some similar errors in judgement. And for what it’s worth, the days of really good insurance appear to be over. We’re all paying more in premiums and more in deductibles and co-pays, so you’re not alone!

  13. I hope you are feeling better. Try contacting the drug manufacturer for help getting the Advair. My mom and my aunt have been able to get their meds for free or discounted through programs set up by the manufacturers.

  19. I hope you’re feeling better today, that’s really scary! My son suffers with asthma yet refuses to take the preventive inhaler and only the emergency one when absolutely necessary, which is just madness…boys, what can you do? Originally from England and now living in Canada, I appreciate the luxury I used to enjoy with the NHS, but there are commercials here which say ‘if you are having problems affording your medication, please contact the manufacturer, they may be able to help you’ it might be worth a try? I hope today is a better day for you. The sun is finally out here and the snow is slowly disappearing. Oh to live in California …… 🙂

  22. Sad state of affairs. medical insurance is out of control. I am so sorry this went south for you but lesson learned. Both of my granddaughters are using inhalers and peak flow meters. This is a bad year I guess. I have one more year until I go on Medicare and stop paying ridiculous monthly premiums. My blood pressure goes up when I think about it. I guess I don’t even have to tell you to take care of yourself but I certainly do Hope you feel better.

  25. Oh, I hope you’re doing better! When you’re well it is hard to remember ever being sick. When you’re sick it’s hard to remember ever being well. So I think it’s easy to rationalize not taking meds.

  28. I don’t have the excuse that I can’t afford it (great insurance). I just hate taking the preventive. I am suppose to take Dulera twice a day and then Ventilin as my emergency inhaler. I always forget the preventive and remember after I have my makeup on and I’m ready to leave for work… since I have to brush my teeth after the treatment (you can develop some weird fungal thing if you don’t), I tend to skip it. Then at night I remember after I’m in bed! So, I never take it and just walk around with the emergency one.
Your experience is definitely a wake up call. Hope you feel better. I know how scary it feels to be unable to breath.

  31. OH DEAR!!! How scary is it not to be able to breathe? I’m glad all is well and that you have your proper inhalers now.
The Proventyl should have helped you quickly as it’s an emergency inhaler. The Advair is a daily inhaler to keep things open in normal circumstances. AMIL is on similar inhalers.
In case you’re unaware of it, asthma attacks can be set off by smoke, air pollution, fear, running, and other such stressors on your body or the air you breathe. Last year AMIL ended up at her asthma doctor’s office for an emergency appt. because she burned a pan, then stayed in the smokey house. She should have stayed outside.
Yes, the price of prescription medicine is criminal as is the cost of medical insurance. Has anyone seen that one medical insurance option costs over $6000/month??????? Who can afford that?
Hope using your glorious stash will keep you happily quilting. That’s what I’m doing.
    Big hugs!!!!

  34. Hi Nicole, what a scary experience. I hope you recover quickly.
If there is a Costco near you, you might want to price the Advair. They tend to be lower than the chain pharmacies, at least here in the Midwest.

  37. I am sure glad that you are still among the living (if not exactly breathing!). I think that I remember a similar incident years ago? Where you were skimping on meds because of the high costs and had a major attack? I know people EVERYWHERE are doing this now (and probably have been since at least 2008). You are not alone.
We love you. Breathe deeply amidst your quilty goodness…

  40. Yikes! My son is on both of these meds. But in Canada the Advair is $75 and the albuteral is $15 a month. Send me your prescriptions!!! Now I know why I hear of busses filled with people coming to Canada from the states to fill their prescriptions. Anyways, get better and take care.

  43. I’m so glad you’re home & recovering after that scare! The high cost of insurance & crazy deductibles are causing so many people to try to conserve or go without medications completely! I agree with commenters above…why not check with the pharmaceutical companies to see if they can provide lower cost or free medications for you! If you don’t ask; you won’t know. In the meantime, take good care!

  46. Tsk! Tsk! No judgement here. I may not have spent medicine money on fabric, but I have done similar with other “important” designated funds. But the fabric was soooo pretty! Hey – if you can’t breathe – you can’t quilt!

  49. Wow, hope you’re feeling better today. When it comes to our health, we really have to ante up. Not sure what the coverage is here in Canada. Luckily, I don’t have asthma, and hopefully I won’t have to find out.

  52. Nicki!! I will lecture you because I love you. I have a friend whose sister died due to an asthma attack. Please don’t be foolish. You are very precious to many people who would be devestated to lose you. You know you need the advair. And your loved ones need you!

  55. Hi Nicole,
First, I hope you are feeling much better with the meds.
Second, don’t suffer sticker shock when you see the emergency room bill. I had to go to the ER 2 weeks ago for an expected abdominal blockage and just saw the bill. . . $18,000 for a bed in the hallway for many 6 hours!
The cheapest thing. . . the morphine shots for the pain. They were a bargain at $8.00.
Of course, after the insurance company negotiations the amount came way down. . . but my portion is still going to put a crimp in my budget.
Glad you were able to get your meds.

  64. By the number of comments I can tell that I am not the only one like you who went from a great health plan to a high deductible situation with expensive meds. Someone has share on an allergy site a website that searches lowest cash price in your area for a particular med. If those meds are not in your insurance formulary should be something comparable and if not perhaps your doctor can write an exception request for them to be covered once you hit your deductible? Feel better soon.

I have a proair inhaler and keep it handy – none of that is cheap. You take care and don’t skip the meds – how can you quilt if you’re having an asthma attack? 🙂

I take another med that is very expensive through my insurance, so am going to get it from Canada Drug…yes it is illegal, but have done it for years, through the mail. Worth investigating, maybe.

  94. Oh how awful! Thanks for sharing this experience with us. There are important lessons to be learned. Besides the obvious, the only other lesson is to make sure you sew up every single scrap of that fabric you purchased so it was worth it!! Feel better and take good care.

  97. Have you tried calling the Pharma company that makes the drugs? Sometimes they will off coupons or assistance to help you stay on the meds. I also second the comment on Costco – they have the lowest prices around and you don’t have to be a member to use their pharmacy.

  100. Oh, Nicole, I am so glad you are ok! My niece has asthma and has been in the ER three times this winter. We were wondering if the weather was a contributing factor this year. I hope that’s the last visit you have to make to the ER! That is so frightening. My sister was scared to death every time she took my niece to the hospital.

  103. Would your doctor be willing to give you a sample sometimes to ease the burden? I don’t have asthma but when I get a bad respiratory bug that settles in my chest, my doctor gives me an Advair sample to use.

  106. Hi Nicole, I am on Advair 250/50 and I am doing great. yes it is expensive, I too stopped it and wound up in the hospital then tried several other meds but nothing worked like this I have an inhaler on me at all times but do not think I have had to use it more than once in 3-4 months that is a great thing. So yes please pay the piper we like having you in our lives. I smoked for many years and this is some of the problem. hope you get better quickly and stay healthy friend.
The world is a better place with you in it and than with you gone. Hugs

  109. I am so glad I live in Australia!!! If a drug is on the PBS we pay $36 per script usually a months supply maximum. Both those drugs are on the PBS here. that said your insurance is being short sighted. Not funding a preventer (the one on the left) would have to cost more in the long run. And why shouldn’t you spend money on fabric???? its called mental health.

  112. Asthma is such a terrible thing to live with! I am so sorry that you wound up in the hospital with the attack! Goodness… who wouldn’t want to try to get away with paying less for the medication? When my hubby had one Rx that was 1,200 for an 82 day supply. Insane! I started getting the same Rx from Canada at 1/3 the cost. It had to be done.

  115. I hear your pain – I too use Advair – right now I have insurance so it “only” costs $50 a month. Frankly, I think this is a complete rip off by the drug companies and totally outrageous. Just be careful – not having the proper meds can be a huge problem. Also, check with your doctor to see if you can get a nebulizer – they help me in a pinch. I really can’t dole out $500 for an emergency room visit, so I try to avoid them. The nebulizer helps a lot!

  118. Gosh it sounds like an awfully scary time. Glad you are okay. I can’t believe your medical support system is so bad in the USA. In Australia preventers are on our equivalent of the FDA approved scheme so it would cost about $36 a month. Maybe you should move here!

  121. Yeouch! I hear you! I am asthmatic also — two hospitalizations in the past 6 months. I got in with a respiratory specialist who has worked me with to find the best fit (within financial reach). I am lucky to have benefits here in Canada, though once I retire it will be a different story. Never have I had problems before and I didn’t pay attention and stopped taking my meds (’cause I felt fine don’tcha know!) … fast forward, almost died. Glad that you are here to talk about it and wishing you the best to find a reasonable alternative! Advair is costly here as well .. thus I changed to Zenhale. It has worked so well that they have cut the dosage in half. I have been a pain in his ass, but he’s been very happy with the results and thanked me for being brutally honest with him! “Hey Doc, I know you think this works great, but it’s not great for me on my income!” Feel free to email me if you need someone to vent to. I know what it’ like! So happy you are here since your crisis!
