Oh man, I have the starch taken right out of me, that is for sure. How many boxes of Kleenex am I going to go through? This one is a doozy. However, unlike the gal in the cartoon above, I haven't had the luxury of lolling around in my bed. I wonder if there will ever be a day when someone doesn't need me to show up and do something?
Just a quick update on Grandpa, if you have been following along the latest drama–He is home from the convalescent hospital and is doing great! He was hospitalized with a bad kidney infection about six weeks ago, and when you are 92, those things take their toll. Truthfully, I didn't think he would be coming home again. But with the miracle of antibiotics, he has shaken off the infection, and due to the help of lots of physical, occupational and speech therapists and other medical professionals, he is now home and doing better each and every day. Needless to say, with my bad cold I am keeping my distance from him for a few days.
That is all my personal news, but I do have something kinda sorta sewing related. Well, it is more shopping related I guess.
I did a bit of shopping on Fatquartershop.com last week. I ordered Heartspun Quilts for Marcus Brothers new collection American Gothic, a lovely group of black and white prints. I surely did deplete my stash of blacks and oranges when I made my Halloween 1904 quilt last fall, so this beautiful range of fabrics will round out that hole in my stash. I also got more rusty oranges as you can see, as well as some sagey greens and fabulous purples. The greens and purples I am hoping to work into my Wild Air quilt. Have I told you about wanting to make Wild Air?
Wild Air is an awesome Miss Rosie pattern that involves 125,000 flying geese units. (I may exaggerate somewhat). A couple of years ago a friend and I shopped together at Life's A Stitch in Janesville, Wisconsin and bought this beautiful red border fabric and the very cool green toile fabric. My friend has finished a quilt using these fabrics and the Wild Air pattern so of course, I want to make one too now. The red print has browns, blacks, purples, greens and tans in it. I have been auditioning fabrics like crazy and still am not quite ready to push forward with cutting. Hopefully some of the greens and purples from my latest online shopping spree will add some pizazz to the mix!
Sometimes I think my absolute favorite aspect of quiltmaking is choosing the fabrics that will be in the quilt. Do you feel like that too?

It usually takes me longer to pick out just the right fabrics than to make the quilt. And when I absolutely love a certain fabric, let’s say the red one, I don’t want to cut it up to use it. Go figure. So far I really like your selections, esp. the red one and the green toile one.

Love your fabrics and will look great in any quilt. Takes me forever to pick out fabrics and then always question if I got the right ones! Good luck….

Choosing fabric is my least favorite part of the process. If I lived near you I would let you choose all the fabric for all my projects. I wonder if you enjoy it so much because you’re so good at it. That’s probably why I don’t enjoy it, I question my choices even after the top is pieced and quilted.

So sorry about the code in your poor nose and that run down/run over feeling that goes with the misery. Hope those tissues with lotion in them will keep your nose comfy while Thera-Flu or some other OTC symptom controlling medicine will help you feel lots better.
Oh! Your fabrics are wonderful and I agree that choosing fabrics is so much fun. I look at quilts I made in the past, sometimes thinking about what I’d do differently now from changing a fabric or two to wishing I’d cut the strips narrower. Don’t you wonder if the makers of the quilts we so admire have those same thoughts?
Love the quilt, but being in the midst of making the last 84 HSTs for this North Wind quilt, are you SURE you want to untake making 100 million flying geese (I exaggerate a lot!)??? If you want to, go for it!
Happy to hear that Grandpa is doing so well once again! Do you suppose the socialization at the hospital was part of the cure?
Hugs!

Sorry to hear that you’ve got a terrible cold…they can certainly knock the energy right out of you. Might be a good time to catch up on good books, movies and re-energize before you starting making a trillion flying geese! Glad to hear that Grandpa is doing better and is home again.

Choosing fabrics. Hmm. I like choosing fabrics to buy. Choosing exactly what to put into a quilt is agonizing. Although once it’s finally, finally, finally, decided, the pain goes away. Glad to hear that Grandpa is doing so much better. Hope you’re feeling better, soon, too.

I enjoy choosing fabrics for future quilts! Especially when they seem to jump off the shelf/laptop screen & beg to go home with me!! Take it easy & try to take some down time (am I seriously thinking you can GET down time?) to recover from your cold! That’s very good news about Grandpa!

The fabric selection process takes me FOREVER, but it’s not because I don’t enjoy it, it’s just because I have to visualize everything to exhaustion. But after I commit, I am happy with my choice and rarely deviate.
I love Thelma’s version of WA. I commented to her that it was difficult to visualize another color layout on that pattern, but she exceled at it because her version was outstanding.
I hope you start feeling better soon!

Bummer you’re not feeling good but yippee that grandpa is. I was sick, as was my family a few weeks ago and it lasted over a week. It was almost like a flu, but runny nose, headache, feverish type. We just drank lots of vitamin c and rested, so hopefully you’ll get a little of that. Love the stash 🙂 hope you feel better soon!

I think my least favorite part of quilting is picking out the fabric. I usually ask for the help of one particular gal at my LQS and my hubby, he is a great help, but I can tell you I know it when I see it, once they’ve picked out material and if I don’t like it, I know that too! That’s why I like kits, why recreate the wheel if I really see something I love, but I do replace some fabric in kits as well. Love your shopping spree, I was looking at the American Gothic fabric too, I might have to break down and buy some. Hope you get to feeling better! I had that stuff about 3 weeks ago, chest, sinus, and I’m now on my second round of antibiotics!

Oh man! Sick??!! That just isn’t fair! So glad grandpa is doing well again. Maybe he can fill in for you for a few days? Just kidding. ;p 125,000 flying geese?! No problem! You’ve got that specialized flying geese ruler! ;p
Love the new fabric and yes, I love picking the fabric too. Get well soon…the world needs you. 🙂

Selecting the fabric is definitely one of my favorite parts of quilting. Possibly because I was born to shop!

So glad to hear Grandpa is doing better. Modern medicine is such a miracle. I agree with about about buying fabric. That’s the artistic part of the process for me. It’s hard to make a quilt for someone else’s color scheme if it just isn’t my cup of tea. Hope you feel better.

I hope you are feeling better now! And I am glad Grandpa is back home and doing better! You know, color choices for me are paralyzing. I do well with the fat quarter bundles – find them all helpful… I have a few kits and I find myself always changing out colors… I love your Wild Air choices!

Yep, choosing colours and fabrics is the best bit! I hope your cold has moved on, and glad to hear that Grandpa is back in his own home. He sounds like a fit old fella beating such serious infections at his age.

I KNEW you were referring to Thelma when I saw this pattern! All those crazy flying geese (not my favorite) but I’m sure yours will wonderful just like Thelma’s.
I have difficulty choosing fabrics sometimes…get frustrated and either put it away or buy a kit /:
