Sunflower Sisters Reveal

149

I am so excited to share with you my Sunflower Sisters quilt!  I made this quilt as a Sew Along with two friends, Thelma of Cupcakes "n' Daisies and Lisa of Stashmaster. We swapped red, gold, black and brown fabrics to give ourselves more variety, and gave each other lots of encouragement as we proceded through the project.  The real name of this pattern is Autumn in My Garden by Buggy Barn, and it is available on the Buggy Barn website.
I opted to make my version of the quilt smaller, as my intention is to use it as a table cloth for summer and fall entertaining.  Ozzie approves, as you can see.
In other posts, I have lamented the issues I had making my quilt, so I won't go over them again, except to say that accuracy was a problem that could have been avoided if I had slowed down and not rushed through the experience.  At last, my quilt top was put together satisfactorily and I laid it out to take a photo for this final reveal.

Hmmm,  do you see what I see?  Top left block?  Excuse me while I go slash my wrists.

I cannot even believe I did that.

But I did.
No matter, it is fixable, but I swear, it is typical of what I went through with this project from start to finish!  Don't get me wrong, there is no problem whatsoever with the pattern instructions.  I just didn't take the time to do more exacting construction techniques when I really should have.  I hurried, and this is what happens when you do that.

Here it is, all fixed.  I showed my family my mistake before I corrected it, and they begged me to leave it in.  "Nobody is perfect", they said, "you should leave it, it's charming".  Uh, no, I don't think so.
Live and learn, slow down and smell the roses, no job is worth doing unless it is done well, insert platitude of your choice here…It is done and I do love it, that is all that matters!

  1. It is very pretty! I can relate, though, to sometimes having one of “those projects” where anything that can do wrong, does. And you are right, it isn’t the pattern, it is me or something going on in my life. I never throw in the towel, though. It seems like the more that goes wrong, the more I get stubborn and keep fixing it. In the end I am exhausted but relieved the quilt is finally “right” and the poor quilt is ready to be finished and not ripped up any more!

  3. My friends would have called that your humility block. 🙂 And I would have fixed it, too. Your version looks awesome!

  5. I love the way this looks. I bought the pattern but will have to wait until I collect more fabrics to make it. I’m glad you fixed the corner block – I would have done that, too.

  7. Oh I can so relate! I had a very complex table runner I was giving to my wonderful sis-in-law for her birthday. I had it quilted and was showing my group and one of the new quilters asked why I turned that one HST different from the others? Arghhhhhhhhh. I ripped it out, fixed it right and them had to rebuilt that section!

  11. It’s the first thing my eye saw – your little boo boo. I’m glad you fixed it. You’ll be much happier with the quilt now.

  15. A lovely finish despite all of the obstacles. I might not have fixed it (although it was an easy one) and would have hated myself for being so lazy every time I looked at it.
Have a lovely weekend admiring your latest creation.

  17. Sunflowers looks lovely on your porch. Don’t beat yourself up over the mistake (now fixed anyway), happens to everyone (well, eveyone who rushes at one time or another). I have a quilt with the mistake quilted in; I didn’t notice the error until the quilt was in use.

  19. Bravo Nicole!! Your fix looks great, the quilt looks right at home in your outdoor spot. We take on this hobby of quilting as an outlet, a comfortable place to be in lives of stress and hurry. On occasion our hobby turns on us and becomes the MONSTER. Lucky, most errors can be licked like we are wonder-woman and put us back in charge of our life (of our quilting, at least).

  21. Such a lovely finish and I feel for your process. I second guess myself often with colour substitutions and what works in my own home versus what the designer intended. It is, after all, your quilt and it is perfect for what you want it to be. Good job! And I would have fixed the boo boo too.

  23. Applause, applause!!!!!!! What a cheerful, delightful quilt, even before the backwards block was turned around! Well done!
I’ve just abandoned a failed project and am on to something else. Will deal with the remnants of the failed project after Christmas.
It’s good to see Ozzie again. How does he like his new home? Is his yard fenced and is it larger?
    Hugs!

  25. This quilt is so much brighter than it looked in the last post: love it. And thanks for sharing your mistake. I am doing that over and over in a Christmas quilt, so much so that I have not made the last block knowing I will make part of it backward, too. But seeing how wonderfully your quilt turned out, I think I will just go make that block, fix it, and have my top done, too.

  27. Despite your set-backs, that quilt turned out perfectly! The size looks just right as a tablecloth on your deck! phhhhhttttttt!!!! ALL of us have had similar mistakes show their faces once we think we’ve finished…and if anyone tells you they haven’t…well, you know…
And, my favorite part of your entry for today? You know that, too!!! Sweet Ozzie!! Thanks for letting him pose for a photo op!!!

  31. Some quilts just invoke the domino effect. I really like the lights you picked for this quilt. It makes a little less bold of a statement.

  35. Thanks for making me laugh, you’re so funny! Love how it turned out 🙂 I had to laugh cause I did a similar thing and luckily noticed it last night while I was laying out a row to be sewn. Funny how you don’t notice things and then it’s like a big neon sign flashing wrong, yeah, not charming 🙂

  37. I think it looks great before and after! I had to laugh when you said you were going to go slash your wrists, not because that would be funny but because I know it is devastating when that happens and because I seem to do that too! Blame it on the eyes. I think its our eyes. It must be our eyes. That’s all it can be! Little Ozzie is looking as cute as ever too! Now, aren’t you glad you’re done with this thing as pretty as it is??? 🙂

  39. Charming my a@@! Who are these people? Would they walk around with their shirts on backwards? Of course you were going to fix it! I’m teasing you of course, I know your family means well and they would have loved it regardless. It came out larger than I was picturing and it is great on your beautiful porch! I have huge porch envy now!

  43. The quilt looks fabulous as a table topper. I have just finished reading a book about Amish quilting and it was telling how each quilt they make should have some small mistake in it to show that they are not perfect and to teach them to be humble.(Part of their faith and beliefs) Personally I don’t think my OCD would let me do that so like you I would have to correct it also.

  45. I love your blog. It’s like visiting a friend. The quilt is beautiful with or without the error! I once bought dishes with the 12 days of Christmas on them. The days were wrong on some of the dishes. Two turtle doves? I don’t think so. Anyway, I didn’t take them back to the store. It’s fun to see if friends notice the errors! Love your quilts!

  49. You quilt looks beautiful. So glad you went with the table top quilt. It looks lovely on your table and will be a great addition to your porch displays. I think you will be much happier with the mistake corrected. I’ve been know to take a quilt apart and redo sections and even take a binding off….LOL Look forward to seeing it all quilted up.

  51. Don’t be so hard on yourself! And do NOT point out your mistakes. I recently made a quilt where I discovered a mistake similar to yours AFTER it was all quilted. C’est la vie! Life is too short. . .

  53. I’m hoping that you can help me. I don’t have a blog but I enjoy reading yours, you have such beautiful items, and one day I hope I can be as good as you. But right now my problem is this: this is my 4th t-shirt quilt and why I did this I’ll never know. on the back side of each t-shirt I put iron on facing, but this time I put heat and bond and it has a backing that you use for appliques, so it kind of has this rubbery feeling….do you know of any way I can get this off? much appreciated, Sharon Williamson
