What Are You Doing NOW?

001

I just can't help it.  With Another Year of Schnibbles on hiatus, I am really missing the nudge from Sinta and Sherri to make another Schnibbles table topper.  Besides, I need small projects on which to keep practicing my machine quilting so I don't get rusty.  I have a feeling machine quilting is not like riding a bike.  You must keep up using your skills so you don't fall on your face.

I recently acquired some of the collection "Little Black Dress" by Basic Grey for Moda.  Such lovely gentle neutral tones, in black, grey, cream, and gold.  Love it.  My dining room table has been asking nicely for a new runner, so I thought I would comply with its request.  My choice of pattern was the Schnibble "Joy Luck", designed by the fabulous Miss Carrie Nelson, genius creator of many super patterns for small and large quilts.

The pattern gives instructions for a square quilt, and normally that works for me on my kitchen table.  However, the dining room table is a long oval, so I needed to change things up a bit.  Instead of five rows of twelve units, I made three rows of fifteen.

I got the long side borders on and then realized that my shorter side borders didn't fit.  I have no clue why not.  Some mathematical calculation that is beyond my comprehension I suppose.  It was late afternoon on Sunday, and I knew I had folks expecting some sort of dinner, so I left the project on the floor of the studio, as you see it.

My plan is to remove one strip of fabric from somewhere near the middle of each side and see if it fits then.  If not, maybe I will need to remove two strips from each side.  I am going to make this work!

This is going to look elegant with my black and yellow dishes, and lots of crystal on the table.  Yellow daffodils or tulips, for sure.  Just you wait.

  1. You must have flown to have this so nearly finished all in what seems like one go. Wow!! Love it!
Do you suppose that one of your border squares on the left wasn’t trimmed to size and there in lies your problem with the fit? I’ve done that in the past and when I measured each border block, my error was easy to find. How I missed trimming one side of my block is still a mystery but it was also an easy fix. Put on your Nancy Drew hat and have a think!
    Hugs!

  3. Wow…there are alot of chain sewing pieces there and it really is coming out nice. Sometimes it is nice to have a longer runner.

  5. I love the way the center of this pattern showcases the beautiful collection of little black dress. I’ve made a quilt from this fabric and I just love it! It will be a fabulous backdrop for yellow or red. Can’t wait to see it all set up!

  7. Can you add a second dark border onto the white border? That would fill in some space, but it looks like only two sides dont fit, so adding a border might not work.

  9. Ok, new thought…just divide the difference that you need between the two middle white sashings and make them both bigger. Of course that means ripping it all apart 🙂

  11. I really like this and it will look smashing with your yellow dishes! I’m no help with the borders because my math really sucks!

  13. I was so excited to see your first photo! I have two charm packs of Little Black Dress burning a hole in my pocket! I need to prep a project for an upcoming retreat so I ordered the yardage to make Carrie’s “Dimestore” Schnibble! I, too, find I’m missing the monthly ‘parade’ & that’s one I didn’t get to last year. Love your LBD table runner!

  15. It is looking great. I have a feeling that the issue with the border is somewhere in the sashing, or lack of additional sashing in the main part of the quilt. I think that removing a piece from the border will probably fix it! I love how it is turning out. I missed having a Schnibble to do in February, too, and now in March as well.

  19. So pretty! By the way, I do think machine quilting is a little like riding a bike. If you take a break, you may be a little shaky at first, but it will all come back to you quickly.

  21. That looks so nice! I miss having a deadline for AYOS. It made me get the Schnibbles projects finished! Enjoy your week 🙂

  23. It’s going to be super elegant and very unusual Nicole. I love that colour combo too, but it isn’t one you see very often. I can’t wait to see the finished tabletopper!

  25. Speedy Gonzales! I felt pretty darn productive yesterday, but I didn’t get a whole quilt top put together or anything. Your babies must have left you alone for a bit! Happy sewing this week!

  27. It is going to be really nice!
I think your idea of removing one strip from each side, for starters, is a good one. From the centre would be good, but you might also consider the light horizontal strip on each side that is just above the bottom block of vertical strips. Then if that’s not enough, what about bringing in a seam or two just a touch — enough to make the difference, but not enough to see with the naked eye.
Good luck. I know you’ll finish it in fine style.
