I don't have a whole lot to show for myself for all the free days I have had this past weekend.  As you see, about half my Message in a Bottle rows are sewn together.  A more tedious process than  making the blocks, so I have slowed down.

Work on Long Road Home has commenced, but I don't have a picture to share just yet.

What I have done in the past week is to scramble to see some of the movies that have been nominated for Oscars.  I saw The Sessions with Helen Hunt and John Hawkes.  Well.  All I can say about that is Helen Hunt has a fabulous body and a complete lack of inhibition.  Good acting for sure, but my word.  I also saw Flight with Denzel Washington, which was a real study in addiction.  That movie had me holding my breath for the first half hour or so!  And lastly, my husband and I saw Silver Linings Playbook with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, and enjoyed it.  Great acting on the part of all the cast.  The dialog must have been crazy to learn, as for most of the scenes everyone is talking on top of one another!  Terrible title for the movie–I could not remember it to save my life when I went to buy my ticket.

Anyone else have some movie reviews?  I missed Lincoln when it was at my local theater, darn it.  I may squeeze in Life of Pi sometime this week if I get a chance.

Happy Monday to everyone.

  1. Not a bad effort in getting caught up on your movies. Of those nominated I watched Les Mis… I call that one a cleansing movie because I cried so much! I also watched The Impossible (best actress nominee) which left me a bit traumatized with the injuries the Mom sustained during the Tsunami. This weekend I watched Life of Pi and it was just as beautiful as I expected it to be. It was also very relaxing. I would love to see Argo but that one is hard to find in theaters. I plan n seeing Lincoln and Silver Linings before the ceremony.

  3. We were a little disappointed in “Lincoln”. The acting was phenomenal for everyone to be sure. But we were expecting more of a biographical story line that included Lincoln’s rise to the White House, Mrs. Lincoln’s mental health issues and on into the Civil War, etc. However, the movie, in it’s entirety was about his fight to get the Thirteenth Amendment passed. So it takes place in Legislation with just a few scenes in the residence and outdoors, but even then the topic is the Bill they are trying to pass. Sally Fields mostly just cried, argued and wailed a lot, but as I said, they didn’t explain her problems. So…though it was interesting, it wasn’t what we expected. IT did however show us that, if it was historically correct, politics hasn’t changed one whit. Hugs…

  5. We went to see Silver linings playbook this weekend too. I thought my husband was going to walk out in the first half, which was VERY slow – but I LOVED the ending!! I’m trying to get out to see some of the other Oscar films too – but not being very successful so far!

  7. We don’t seem to go to movies any more and are happy to wait until they’re on TV. Are we old fuddy-duddies or what?
Love how MiaB is coming along and am sorry it is a bother to put together. Some glorious patterns are like that. MiaB is looking good and you should have some applause. Applause!!!!
Am starting to help AMIL clear out some of FIL’s belongings. We have a bazillion books on all sorts of topics (lots of military) to deal with. We may look into selling then thru Alibris, Powell Books, or Amazon. There are National Geographic magazines dating back to the 1920s, too. Does anyone have a better idea?
    Hugs!

  9. we went to the movies for the first time in years on Sat night. We saw Argo which we enjoyed. Maybe its cause we are Canadians and I remember the news feeds of the event.

  11. I’ve seen Silver linings play book a nd loved it. I’ve also seen Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, The Impossible, and Flight. I’ve liked all of them but The Impossible was very hard to watch. Would you recommend the sessions?

  13. Your quilt is still looking fabulous! You are to the part that I don’t enjoy. I’d rather make blocks. 🙂

  17. We saw Lincoln. I must say that I was not all that impressed with the storyline or the acting.
On another topic, I made your Thai Coconut/Peanut/Chicken Soup with Noodles. It was amazing. We loved it. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  19. Les Mis and Argo. Argo was amazing, even though we all know the outcome, I was sitting on the edge of my seat, palms sweating, holding my breath. Then for some eye candy I went to Top Gun in 3D Imax last night. Good lord that volleyball scene is still great!

  21. The MiaB quilt is beautifully coming together! Thank you very much for your movie reviews. I love Helen Hunt, but I don’t think I’ll go see The Sessions, after what you’ve written. 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be able to see Lincoln, as a government lawyer the subject does interest me maybe a little more as other people.

  23. We are at the same stage. I had my new quilt project laid out, also on the diagonal, and had put together some of the rows – but then had to collect it all up again for night time… my kids sometimes need a different bed to sleep in at night, and that bed is also my ‘design’ bed in the spare bedroom. Hope to reveal my finish this week. Yours looks great – makes me want to do a brown and blue repro quilt!

  25. Pretty quilt! I loved Life of Pi and the cinematography is so stunning that I’d highly recommend seeing it on the big screen. Loved Lincoln, missing seeing Flight but am hoping to see Zero Dark Thirty and Argo yet. Movies come late to my neck of the woods, especially dramas it seems.

  27. I enjoyed Life of Pi…had to look away a couple of times in the beginning! I hope to see Argo, but in Smalltown, America I don’t know if it’s going to make it here!! Your quilt is coming right along! Lovely!!

  29. About those movies. I recently saw The Sessions and loved it. Amazing acting. Yes, some difficult and uncomfortable moments for us as viewers. But such a beautiful, sensitive and non-judgemental treatment of a difficult topic and situation. And a great testament to the human spirit. I also saw Flight. Very tense, very interesting, and, suprisingly (and pleasantly so), not the obvious, easy ending we might have expected. Life of Pi: absolutely do go see it on the big screen. It is stunning, beautiful, and thoroughly engrossing from start to finish.

  31. We have seen Argo, Django Unchained, and Lincoln and enjoyed them all very much. No desire to see Silver Linings Playbook but we are hoping to rent Flight soon and we are hoping Zero Dark Thirty will come to our theatre. Also saw The Fellowship of the Ring, oops, I mean The Hobbit the other night with a friend (so hard to tell the difference) and quite liked it – it felt more like 2 hours instead of 3. Thanks for your own movie reviews!
