Stop, Drop and Roll

I worked a bit on my Little Bites "Drop" project while the baby took her nap yesterday.  All I have to say about this miniscule little project is…………..

It is absurdly, ridiculously fun.

These teensy little blocks are the end result of quite a bit of trimming at each step of construction, but so worth it.  There you see pictured seven perfect little 3 inch quilt blocks.  Ridiculous.  And thrilling.

The square in a square block is not for sissies.  The first time I made a quilt that called for them, I remember thinking, "Pshaw, Nicole.  You don't need to trim those blocks.  You sewed 'em just fine".  Heh heh heh.  Joke was on me.  I sadly learned that I had to undo all the blocks I had made and do them over, and trim carefully, or the blocks just do not come out to be the correct size.  You have to trim the square in a square block after each "round" to ensure acuracy before you attach the next round of bias edged triangles.  You just do.  So make up your mind and do it.

I am loving this month's Another Year of Schnibbles project (Sherri and Sinta are hosting).  And woo hoo, look at me, I didn't wait til the last minute either.  Such fun.  You better join in, you will be glad you did.

Just wait and see what happens when I get to those silly little one inch squares I showed in yesterday's post.  I may change my tune.  But probably not!

  1. These teeny tiny blocks are so cute Nicole! I liked your post yesterday too – I have never had to cut a 1″ square for a quilt before. This looks like it will be a beautiful little quilt. And I agree about the trimming – that’s a tip I picked up from you too!

  3. Getting on like a house afire are you?! Not that houses stop, drop, and roll of course …. sorry, no coffee yet.
Love the little blocks. I look forward to seeing your final creation!
You are so right about the squaring up. The chevron log cabin blocks I’m making are being trimmed carefully and squared up as I cut them apart from the strip piecing. It does matter immensely to how the blocks go together.
My most insane cutting size was some 3/4″ strips that I sewed together into strip sets, cross cut at 1/2″, and sewed those back together in a 1/4″ one patch that was 5″ square. It is too cute and tooooooo tiny. What was I thinking?
We’re off after breakfast to vote!
    Hugs!

  5. I have had such good luck with the Deb Tucker Square in a Square ruler, but I can’t remember if you can get that little with it! Great job Nicole Those are adorable blocks and I can imagine they are super fun to make once your hands get used to the tiny pieces!

  7. I remember years ago thinking I would “whip up” a little Amish square in a square mini quilt. Squaring up the squares – pshaw! Oh my goodness – let’s just say, that mini never got made!

  9. So cute. They do look tempting. I can’t decide if they would drive me crazy or not. Small quilts have tempted me.

  11. Thanks for all of your great tips! I plan to start mine this weekend. I’ve settled on Dancing in the Rain by Laundry Basket. I hope I have enough contrast, but I guess I’ll find out when I get it all cut up and laid out like you have. I love the French General fabrics, but I need to spread the love!!
