Spools All Done

002

Here it is!  My Civil War Reproduction version of Spools!

I was so happy to get this put together this weekend.  I varied the pattern slightly by making some of the "thread" strips thinner, so I could get to use more fabrics from my stash and make things a bit scrappier looking.  The pattern calls for three "thread" strips in each Spool, each measuring 2 1/2 x 6".  I made some of the strips 1 1/2", which finished at 2 1/2'.

I so wanted to complete this before I left on my trip to Ireland, but time just wasn't on my side.  I am also working on a larger version of the Spools quilt, done in Marmalade (and a few other Bonnie & Camille prints), but have decided to put those blocks aside for now.  Come Spring, I will be in the mood to finish up those blocks in their cheerful pink, green, orange, blue and red colors.

Right now, I am anxious to work on my projects from the Buggy Barn classes.  Hill Country Baskets is my first choice, especially after a little birdie told me that Thelma has finished hers already!  That is one gorgeous pattern by Red Crinoline Quilts.

How have the rest of you fared with your Spools projects?  If anyone would like to share their pictures with me, I will be happy to post them here on my blog.

Hope you all had a great weekend.  Me?  I managed to come down with a cold.  Have you noticed how often that happens after an airplane trip?

In other momentous news, Baby E has taken her first steps!  She can walk!  And is she ever practicing.  She went from standing up, to putting one foot out and falling down, to taking three, four or five steps at a time before she falls or sits down.  Of course she managed to fall and conk her head on my coffee table on Saturday.  I suppose there will be more mishaps such as that to come.  She will become more and more proficient by the day though.  Won't be long and I will be chasing after her non stop. I will try to get a picture of her this week to share.

  1. Cheers for those first exciting steps Miss E has accomplished!!!!! Yes, tumbles and the resulting bumps and bruises are par for this course and running is not far behind. I LOVE the site of a diapered bottom in little bitty overalls staggering and sitting suddenly as walking begins.
Love your Spools quilt and applaud your creative idea to cut your “thread” strips more narrow so you could use more fabrics/spool! It’s wonderful not to be slave to pattern instructions when you have an idea that you like more!! More applause!!
    Hugs!

  3. I love the quilt. This one in the civil war prints is my favorite so far of all I’ve seen.
My grandson who is ten months old is really walking now. Such a fun stage. They grow up so fast!

  5. I must admit that this one is my favorite spool quilt. I have seen so many made in modern colors (like your marmalade), it’s refreshing to see one in darker more fall tones. I really like it.
I’m looking forward to the hill Country baskets quilt. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but I love that pattern. I think I’m going to need to buy it. LOL!

  7. Love the Spools in your civil war fabrics! I finished my flimsy too.
I knew it was about time for Baby E to start her first few walking attempts. There’s no stopping her now! How fun!

  9. Love your Spools! Enjoy Baby E’s early steps, and be prepared to be stepping pretty lively yourself as she becomes adept. Take care of that cold.

  11. Love your spools quilt! Poor Baby E 🙁 I used to have those little rubber things on the edges of my coffee table as I had a very accident prone son…seemed to help a little 🙂

  13. Just love your Civil War Spools ! I just got my spools quilt back from the quilter and am almost done with the binding. I made my quilt out of Petite Odile French General fabric.

  15. Hooray for Baby E and for a finished quilt top! No worries – I think it’s a rite of passage for all grandmothers that at least one of your grandchildren bumps his/her head on your coffee table. I bumped mine on one grandmother’s coffee table, and my brother took care of the other grandmother’s coffee table. We both turned out fine!

Oh my, you have a near toddler now to follow around! They don’t steer that well for a while 🙂

  19. Fantastic version of Spools, Nicole! Sorry to hear you caught cold on the place – we did on our trip, too! Too little air being recirculated around the plane! How fun that Baby E is walking! She’ll soon be chasing Grandpa around the porch!
    Cheers!

  21. Love your Spools!! And Baby “E’ walking!!! How can that be, it seems she was just born. Well before you know it, she will be asking for the car keys 😉

  23. I love your spools! I think making some of the ‘threads’ narrower is a great idea. And wonderful that your little granddaughter has started walking. If you needed eyes in the back of your head before, you surely will now! My little one loves stairs and can go up but not down, so that is our nemesis at the mo.
I also really enjoyed your previous post about the woollen mill – what a treat to go and see weaving in action! That orange / red check is just fabulous.
