Now that I have moved away from civilization and live out in the boonies, I find that I purchase most of my fabric online. I do try to order from brick and mortar stores that also do online business. One place that I have often bought from is Fatquartershop, who I have praised many times for their customer service, promptness and the attractive way that they package your purchase.
Fabric prices have gone way up, as I am sure many of you have noticed. I don't have much of a discretionary income, now that I am not working full time, so whatever money I budget for fabric purchases is very dear to me. It is so lovely to receive those packages that I have been waiting for with such great anticipation. It is doubly lovely when the vendor has taken the time to package the fabric with some sort of care and attention.
This is how a recent package from Shabby Fabrics arrived:
Notice how they stacked the fatquarters so a smidgen of each one shows? See how amazing they all look together? That fabric looks like it is WORTH something. And they even labeled the collection for me so in the future when I get to use it, I will be reminded of what the group is. I spent $55 on this fabric, and when it arrived, I was pleased and felt my money had been very well spent. I felt like I got my money's worth. Presentation. Worth it's weight in gold.
I ordered some fabric from another online vendor last week. And spent $93 on it. This is how it arrived:
Stacked sloppily and tied with a sad little string. How completely uncerimonious and joyless.
Deplorable. I am NOT a happy camper. That does not look like almost $100 worth of fabric.
I did call the company to express my disappointment, and got an immediate call back from the owner. She was very gracious, and very concerned with my dissatisfaction, which I appreciated. Her excuse for the sloppy packaging was that they make every effort to get orders shipped out the same day as the order, that they are a small company, two new girls in shipping, etc etc. Truly I thought it was fantastic that she responded so promtly and with such sincere concern for my complaint. I told her I would send her an email with a photo of the Shabby Fabrics package compared to a photo of her company's package. She immediately emailed me back saying, "I see what you mean".
Whether anything will change on their end I can't say. Maybe it will. I think my voice was heard. I will probably order from them again mainly because the owner was so genuine in her distress that I was unhappy. I am convinced she would bend over backwards to address the issue and try to make me stay on as her customer. However, if I have $50 to spend on fabric, and Shabby Fabrics or Fatquartershop carries the same thing, I would be inclined to go with them because it is way more fun to open their packages.
Am I unreasonable?

I have found some very nicely packaged bundles on ebay. I tend to shop where I can find the best price for the same product. I use quiltshops.com for that. I don’t mind if the fat quarters have been cut in the shop- not beautifully packaged if I get the same fabric at a better price. I think Fat Quarter Shop does a nice job, but their prices are typically higher. I like to buy books from Connecting Threads because they are cheaper.

Not unreasonable at all! I live in a large metropolitan area but also order the majority of my fabric online. So many of the local quilt shops seem uninspiring and the inventory seems stale. My faves also are Fat Quarter Shop , Shabby Fabrics, and Hollyhill Quilt shop. All three do an excellent job of presentation and their selection is incomparable. Additionally , their shipping is with lightning speed. When I receive a package from any of these three, I feel as if I have received a Christmas package in the mail!
So you are not alone!

I’m with you, the majority of my fabric comes from an online shop so the big thrill is getting the fabric in the mail. The nicer the presentation the happier I am. The folks with the best packaging I’ve ever experienced is the Country Sampler in Spring Green, Wisconsin. They wrap everything in beautiful paper and tie it all up with fancy bows, even the patterns! It’s a little present each time a box arrives at my doorstep.

I don’t think so – presentation IS important. Shabby Fabrics makes it fun to open their packages. I mean, you know what you’ve ordered, so it’s not like it’s a big surprise, but it’s nice to have it prettily presented, isn’t it? It shows that they think you’re worth the extra effort of pretty packaging, and that counts.

While I do like a pretty package, customer service is far more important to me. I feel it’s something we lose a bit of every day so when you find a retailer like that, so willing to make things right. . . well my money’s on her. Now having said that I think Kim from Fat Quarter is just like that. Her service is excellent as well. She’s always been helpful with questions I’ve had or gone out of her way to assist with something I want. I haven’t ordered from Shabby so maybe I need to 🙂

You’ve definitely struck a chord here! Fabric, especially quilting fabric, is no longer a generic commodity. At the prices we’re currently paying for “designer” quilting fabric, I do expect to receive my fabric in excellent condition and not in a wrinkled mess! I have done business with several online stores and generally find their service and packaging to be excellent. However, there is one large, discount site that just slaps poorly cut fabric pieces in a shipping envelope and the fabric invariably arrives needing ironing. I can overlook some of that since I usually only purchase there because of the discount, but still…

I don’t think it’s unreasonable. Being quilters/sewists/fibre artists, we are very visual people. We also don’t have unlimited funds and want to spend in a way that makes us feel good.

Not at all unreasonable. Presentation always has an impact on us. Any good retailer should know that.

That kind of things means something to me too. Given a choice between the two, I would easily have picked the Shabby Fabrics package. However, your speaking up may make a huge difference to the other company. I guess I’d give them one more chance a few weeks down the road to see if anything has changed. Otherwise, stick with the tried and true.
And I love the pinks and reds you picked out!

Are you being unreasonable? OK, I don’t do tact very well, so this is going to be blunt. Yeah, actually I think you are. The owner responded, in your words very graciously, which you appreciated, yet you still won’t let this go. Please, Nicole, there are more important things in life than the way fabric is folded.

Unreasonable? I should think not! If it arrives sloppy I tend to think everything is sloppy. I’m glad to know the owner of the shop was so attentive and, like you, I would definitely *consider* doing business with them again. That said, all things being equal – I’m going with the clean and pretty presentation. Seriously. It does make a difference. All things being equal. That’s competition. Besides, I love FQS. They’re just top rate. I like top rate. 😉

I agree with you, Nicole – presentation is everything especially with the prices these days. I too order a lot on line because my local shops don’t carry these wonderful lines. They seem to be stuck with the “safe, traditional” fabric. In sorting my fabric, I see alot of that kind of fabric but I’m more drawn to the “modern” fabric at this moment in time. Mostly, that’s because of what I see on your blog and others. The fabric seems like a precious commodity at these prices and the effort to present it well is a bonus.

I have ordered fabric from Equilter several times and it arrives wrapped in tissue paper and has a small thank you note attached. It’s like receiving a gift. I think your $100 purchase deserved better than butcher’s twine and raw edges showing!

I don’t have any complaint with your complaint, Nicole. As long as presentation doesn’t increase the price, I think the vendor should go for it! I recently trolled the internet to look at the price of a particular fabric I needed and found it ranging from $8.70 per yard all the way to $11.95 per yard and had it in two days with a progress report email on the intervening day! So this internet fabric shopping is quite the adventure and there are many things to consider: price, of course, and presentation, but also communication, shipping charges, and promptness. I agree that Fat Quarter Shop is superb on all fronts, and recommend Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA for price of fabric, communication, and haste of delivery. And now am off to investigate Shabby Fabrics . . . .

I think your point is right on the mark. When time and care is taken to add creativity and/or beauty to the item, it does make a positive difference. I’ve gotten fabric orders in tissue paper tied with a ribbon, and, on the other end of the spectrum, in a plastic bag (sometimes with a closure, sometimes closed with tape). It’s no surprise I like the shops that package my order as if they’re a gift!
Just imagine if your order had been tied with ribbon rather than sad string. What a wonderful improvement that would have been.
Love your new fabrics, by the way! I do believe those red ones are at play in your delightful Granny squares.
Hugs!

Hi Nicole.
Nope your not unreasonable.Money is hard to come by so you want the most out of it.I love folding my fabric and putting it in order, this is not an unpleasent job,a little time consuming may be but is bound to get repeat orders in at a time when retailers need to look after their customers.

Nicole, I agree. Green Fairy Quilts include a pen with their name on it, and most shops take the time for a handwritten note on the invoice. I appreciate a personal touch as well as a nice package.

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable and presentation does matter. That said, for me, I take into consideration how much I paid for the fabric. I don’t mind sacrificing presentation if I’m getting a good deal, as long as the fabric is in perfect condition.
Lately, I usually find myself shopping at online vendors which offer discounts (such as Burgundy Buttons and Green Fairy) even though I love and have shopped with FQS and SF. Since fabric prices keep going up and up (rather quickly, too!) I’m more than willing to give up the ribbons, bows, and frills if it means I’m getting 20-30% off retail. In fact, I’d rather do without the presentation for a better price.
If, however, I’m paying full retail, then of course the packaging and presentation matters and I will go with whoever wows me the most.

No you’re not unreasonable at all! With fabric being over $10 a yard you expect the best when you spend your hard earned money. Another shop that prices are fairly reasonable and she always packages them very nice is Intrepid Thread, give her a try some time.

I totally agree, Nicole…the little bit of extra effort shows respect for the customer, who is, after all, an artist!;-) I also appreciate when I am thanked for my purchase, as I do have many options on the internet. And now I am going to go back and appreciate that pretty stack of PamKittyMorning fabric…love it.

I’ll be interested to read what your readers have to say about this. Of course it’s always nice to get a pleasing package in the mail – one shop always includes a personal note when I order. On the other hand, fabric prices are getting so high, not so pretty packaging wouldn’t prevent me from ordering again, especially if the price was right.

I totally agree. I think any quilter would prefer the more attractively packaged fabric and would tend to reorder from that shop before the other one.
I have bought several quilt kits from Country Sampler in Spring Green, WI and they are almost too pretty to open. My LQS just stacks the fabrics and puts their kits in ziplock bags and writes the name on the outside with a permanent marker. The two just don’t compare and of course I’d prefer to buy an attractive kit. When I took one of the Country Sampler kits in to show the owner of the LQS she just didn’t understand why a customer would care! It’s just another example of how much presentation can matter.

Nicole, I have found that Shabby Fabrics makes each and every customer feel as if they were their only client. They have become my favorite online shop. I also love the Fat Quarter Shop, they treat everyone excellent and their packaging is also wonderful! I too would have been disappointed and a little angry with the careless way second batch you ordered was packaged, it causes more fraying and is in my way of thinking, uncalled for. I don’t have to have beautiful ribbons and tissue paper to be pleased with my purchases, but come on…at least stack it neatly and put it in plastic!!! Hugs…

you absolutely are NOT unreasonable !! . . . I also order from the Fat Quarter Shop and love them too . . .
I’ve also ordered fabric from Susan Branch and they do a lovely job with their shipments too . . . I’ve ordered tons of other things from there too . . . same lovely shipments . . .
I will now look at Shabby Fabrics on your recommendation . . . thanks for the info . . .

I recently told a friend I am every advertising person’s best friend. I am all about packaging.
When I spend a lot of money, I like it to look like it’s valued by someone besides just me. If I’m buying discount, the presentation isn’t nearly as big a deal. Shallow? Perhaps. But that’s how I am. How’s that for a long way of saying I agree with you?

Nope, not unreasonable at all. When we spend our money we like to get some pleasure out of it and let’s face it – presentation is IMPORTANT. My favourite clothing shop here in my small town takes the time to properly fold and wrap all their purchases in tissue paper (no matter how much you’ve spent)rather than just throwing the item into a bag.
I agree that prices have gone way up – we pay a lot more in Canada than you do. At times I order from the US and even with the shipping it costs less than what I would pay here. I’ve just heard that one of the rest quilt shops in this area is closing – how sad.

I hear you on this situation and guess what’s important to each of us is different. It takes me a whole bunch to decide say something to a company if I’d like to see an improvement on their site or shipping package. “Pick your pony, take your ride” type thing. However I did recently write a quilting design place (paper/digitized patterns for quilting) because their pictures on their site were small in size, light in color and some would enlarge and some not. I tried to be ever so nice to tell her and let her know I wasn’t complaining but I would like to see things more clear before purchasing and thinking that others would as well. I never heard from her and the last time I looked they were the same.
So I say your company that answered is wonderful just to answer. I’m sure if they make the effort to answer they will make the effort to package prettier too.

How long would it have taken to package the fabrics nicer? 1-2 minutes? It is a little thing, but means a lot. It sure looks nicer too!!

I totally agree, Nicole. I always make it a point to show beautiful presentations on my blog and credit the shop. I will sometimes just leave the package as is on my shelf for awhile to admire it. I’ve also been amazed at the little gifts that some shops include in your order (even when your order is not a lot of $$$). I love the handwritten notes. It all makes me feel special. I’ve also gotten my fabric order wrinkled, haphazardly folded and stuffed into a bag from other shops. Does not make me feel special, so that fabric better have been a really great deal! o:)

I have ordered from on-line shops and brick & mortar shops over the internet because I, too, live in the ‘boonies’ (by choice)! I searched for Carrie Nelson’s Nine Dots line and finally found it in an on-line shop I hadn’t used before. But, I.wanted.that.fabric. I ordered A LOT of it and waited. It arrived and I was so happy–until I opened the yardages and found they had torn it rather than use a rotary cutter or scissors. The edges are not straight for some reason and I’ve had quite a bit of waste trying to square it up. Fat Quarter Shop and others may have set the standard high, but tearing expensive fabric? I have read that people do that but never really thought much about it. Who knew?

I know there are a few online dealers that give a good price on shipping all they can fit into a flat rate pkg./envelope. If the shipping was a really good deal I could get over the presentation. I prewash my fabrics so they get tossed in the washer before they hit my sewing room.

Looks like you’ve struck a chord with many folks out there including me. I totally agree with you and its not just limited to fabric. V. Secret is one of the worst. You pay a small fortune for a bra and it comes in a pathetic envelope and plastic bag!!! Always burns me up. I have two gift cards from there, one from last year Christmas that I have yet to spend because their packaging irritates me so bad. 🙂

I think this discussion understates ALL of our purchasing activity these days. At the mall, there are discount everything shops and then there are swell department stores that show creativity, interest in the customer, and well kept surroundings. Shows that retailers, brick and morter or on-line really do need to compete for the shopper’s dollar. You did well to speak up Nicole.

I ordered 6 yards of fabric and when I finally got the package, it had a piece that was 18″. But the invoice said 6 yards and the human who packaged it stuck a sticker on it that said 6 yards. So I phoned and was told that it was sold out and on back order, but to keep the 1/2 yd and they would send me the 6. A month later, I got the six yards. The only reason I stuck with this was because I was using up a credit from a previous purchase that they screwed up on. I now need more than the 6 yards so I went to my LQS. Although she doesn’t have it in stock, and she knows I only need 3 more yards, she immediately ordered a bolt…SO, I’m lucky to have a great LQS and I go there first before ordering online. Without shops, we don’t have a place to meet for groups/classes and the money stays in my county when I shop local!

Definately not unreasonable! How many times have you walked out of a store because of cleanliness or lack of good customer service? If the way the material is packaged is sloppy then how is it cut, or better how is it stored, treated, cared for before I buy it? I recently bought fabric that came smelling as if it had been sprayed with scent of some sort. Will it wash out, is it masking something else? The way you product is sent represents you and your business, it should look beautiful.

I absolutely love Shabby Fabrics and their customer service. They always go above and beyond.
I have stopped going to some brick and mortar stores because I don’t feel they take the care that they should when I am dropping my hard earned dollars. I don’t appreciate sloppy cutting and just throwing my fabric in a bag. I wouldn’t do business that way!
I applaud the owner of the other store for calling you and getting your feedback. I bet you see a change there :-)and I applaud you for taking the time to let her know. If she isn’t told, how is she going to make a change?

You are certainly not being unreasonable. She needed to know how you felt. Changes can not be made to improve customer satisfaction unless they hear about it. I went to a quilt shop last fall and received such rude and dismal service that I emailed the owner. She was crushed and had no idea it was going on. In this economy, letting the owner know if you are unhappy can mean a business staying open or not.

Great post! I also order from Shabby Fabrics and The Fat Quarter Shop (just got a package yesterday). They are so much fun to open and see your beautiful fabrics packaged so neatly! I love that they both have prompt delivery on their packages! Especially if I am wanting to finish a project … I want my fabric quickly. I would give the other company (wish I knew you it was) another try just because the lady did return your call!
Happy quilting!
Hugs,
Donna

I think, if you are paying top dollar, a nice presentation should be expected. However, if you are looking for the best price and find a low one and the packaging isn’t fancy…let it go. I wouldn’t write off a shop that has low prices because they don’t have a fancy presentation. I do appreciate fabric that is in plastic because the outer packing often gets damaged, and I do love the little “extras” – but if I get a real good price on my fabric, I’m not going to stop using that shop just because they don’t wrap fancy…unless stuff arrives in complete mess. Fortunately that hasn’t happened to me yet.

Presentation is so important. It makes the fabric all that more lovely when presented attractively! We need to feel that our dollars are well spent.

O.K. I am the odd man out. My biggest concern in getting a package of fabric is that it makes it unscathed to my front door…no ripped envelopes, no crushed cartons, no soiled goods. The pretty packaging is nice, but it goes in the garbage…just let me at what is inside!
Large online shops have the advantage of bulk discount purchasing as well as large volume sales, while smaller online shops must watch every dime.
I kind of like the fabric stacks tied with string…it hearkens back to the old days of purchasing fabric in the mercantile!

Honestly, though I admit it’s wonderful to receive a prettily presented package, as long as I receive the fabric I ordered in the correct quantity and in perfect condition, I’m happy. After all, it’s the fabulous fabric I’m paying for – anything else is simply an unexpected surprise and not something that would affect my choice of vendor. 🙂

Before Christmas I ordered some FQs from a UK ebay company. I was very upset about the way they came. They hadn’t been rotary cut, they had been hacked at with scissors, they looked like they had been cut by a child. I did complain because they asked for feedback. They must waste loads of fabric this way because they had to make sure each FQ was they size it was suposed to be. I will only order from them again if I’m desperate.

I like seeing a very pretty presented package. However with that being said we must realize that time is money. I don’t want my money being spent on their time to package pretty. If I can save $1 or more on a yard of fabric for them to just fold it up and mail it…great! Heck…once we untie the pretty package and get it in our own stash…would we really know the difference? Please don’t get me wrong…it is just that things do cost so much now and I want a deal!!

Just this week I ordered from two different vendors online, and I’m eagerly awaiting to see how my fabric arrives. I already have experienced the high quality of Fat Quarter Shop, but they didn’t have the older fabric I needed so I needed to branch out. I should have checked Shabby Fabrics! No, you weren’t unreasonable.

In this day and age we deserve to get what we pay for as well as having it presented nicely! There is so much competition out there for what little discretionary dollars folks have to spend anymore that those who please are those who get repeat business! It’s great that you called the other fabric dealer and voiced your complaint – sounds like she is willing to take heed! I think you did her an immense favor, Nicole and she is certain to reap the benfits from it!
Cheers!

I have to admit I don’t care how my fabric is packaged as long as it arrives! I am so happy to get it that I just rip open the envelope and immeidately spread it all out so I can enjoy it’s fabricy goodness. I am too busy patting it and fondling it and dreaming of how it will look in a quilt to even notice how it is packaged!

I can see both sides… but when it comes to “discretionary ” income I understand. When I spend for fabric– it’s a soulful experience. Choosing it waiting for it to come in and the pretty tissue paper it’s wrapped in is all part of it….Just as much as using and cutting up the pieces. I know how you feel.

Depends on the price I think. If I’m paying 2-3 less per yard, I’m less concerned about pretty, especially when the pretty is costing me money. The time and materials that go into pretty are put back in the fabric price.
Having said that, you know what you want and how much you are willing to pay for it.
I enjoy getting shipments from FQS, especially with the little envelope etc. Makes it seem less a purchase and more a gift I paid for 😉

No, not wrong, Nicole, just p’o’d. I know how you feel. You’ve been through so many frustrations and disappointments in your life lately that this was just the last straw. I know. I want beautiful fabrics to just take me away from my troubles and there it sits like a slug, jammed into a package, wrinkled and not a fricking bow in site. Hell, that sure wouldn’t brighten my day. I’m so glad that you contacted the company and said (I hope) — “Hell, I’m Nicole. I have a blog and I will crush you”!

Oh, so people like you are why I keep getting ridiculously over-packed packages. The sense of inefficiency and wasted effort makes me uneasy, and I’d really rather they didn’t.

Many start up online shops fail to realize the importance of merchandising then sit and wonder why they don’t get repeat business. Your pictures are worth a thousands words. My BF who has an online shop and I were just discussing this issue as I am getting ready to start one. She thought I was wasting my time carefully planning my kit packaging and merchandising themes. Working in Retail I learned good merchandising practices along with good CS reaps sells.

I hear what you are saying. I have ordered from Shabby Fabrics (won a $100 GC from them a few months back..woohoo) and from FQShoppe. Love the packaging & appreciate the time put into my order. However, with the price of fabrics today, if the fabric is of same quality and shipping is reasonable & prompt, I don’t care that much about the packaging. I’m eventually going to open it up & cut into it anyway. I think those who don’t have the fancy packaging are charging a lower price because they are not paying someone to wrap up my fabric extra special. It all boils down to what I can afford.

Perhaps not unreasonable, but it is good you contacted the other retailer and pointed out your unhappiness, rather than just complain to others – which plenty do. I always think if you have a grievance with a company, let them know. It sounds like you have had excellent customer service from the second shop and most small businesses would want to know how they can improve. Price means more to some, packaging to others, but it still is the overall experience, so yes it all counts.

I do a lot of online shopping for similar reasons and feel the same way. Often it takes a couple of weeks for packages arrive and I want to feel like I’m getting a present to myself, lol. It’s great when honest feedback is taken seriously and it sounds like it could end up being positive for the seller in the second instance.

I’m kind of surprised by how may people are saying that it’s NOT unreasonable. I think it is. I can see how one is more aesthetically pleasing, but unless the other fabric was actually damaged rather than just tied with “a sad string” then I don’t see being upset enough to actually complain.

I know this is an older entry but I am so far behind. Seriously? I can see your point to an extent, I love a pretty package, but your fabric stash must be in a whole lot better shape then mine. I really don’t mind what the fabric looks like when it arrives as long as it’s not wet, ripped or written on. I always have to refold fabrics to my liking when I get a delivery whether it looks pretty upon arrival or isn’t even tied with anything. I have more important things to worry about like cancer then how my fabric looks when it arrives 🙂 Glad you brought it to the attention of the shop owner, perhaps she will give it more thought next time.

Wow, that is a sad looking stack of fabric. I’m with you all the way…presentation is important. Some people have a natural knack for it…others don’t.
I LOVE Fat Quarter Shop, too! They have the BEST sales. ;p

I’m not one for fabric looking good wrapped up in nice paper and ribbon, I’m more concerned with my fabric arriving and nothing missing.
As I live in Australia and I tend to buy alot of fabric from the US my only requirement is for my fabrics to be sealed in zip lock bags, as the Priority Envelopes are always a little battered and torn on arrival.
I think a handwritten Thank You is nice from the shop and I make a point of emailing them and thanking them for the gesture.

Not unreasonable at all. Presentation is very important. If I went out for a meal I would expect a lovely presentation of my meal…I expect the same care taken for anything else!

I appreciate it when the vendor takes a bit of extra time to package the fabrics with an eye for visual appeal. I would prefer to receive the first bundle you showed.
