Around the ‘Hood, All Finished!

Sherri at A Quilting Life, and Sinta at Pink Pincushion are hosting Another Year of Schnibbles, and I have jumped on the bandwagon.  Lord have mercy, I actually finished the January project, which is "Full House", a marvelous Schnibbles pattern by Carrie Nelson.  Signed, sealed, delivered and actually quilted!

I think this is my favorite ever Schnibbles pattern!  The  pattern is called "Full House", but I did a smaller version, called "Around the 'Hood", or "Tiny Town".  Not sure, technically, which of those two patterns my little quilt is, but is does involve smaller blocks and a different setting than the original pattern.  Check out Carrie's blog post on Nov. 9th  for links to the instructions to make this variation of "Full House".

It fits my round kitchen table perfectly, and was so darn fun to make.  The fabrics I used were two charm packs of Blueberry Crumbcake by Blackbird Designs for Moda.   Love, Love, Love that fabric collection.  The best thing is, it goes perfectly with my blue and white theme for January.

What I am really loving about doing Another Year of Schnibbles, is that A) I get a new table topper every month, and B) I can practice my machine quilting skills.

For the center section, I used my tried and true blue painters tape quilting method, which lends itself wonderfully to a grid of tiny squares, such as the 49 block center section of this project. 

Quilting around the houses was trickier, mainly because I am total bone head about planning the best method of quilting around shapes without having to stop and tie off my threads.  Of course when I got to practically the very last tie off, I remembered that I was supposed to sink my knots and thread tails.  So, on the back of my quilt I have a gazillion little knots.  Oh well, practice makes perfect.

I think I may add some additional quilting around the outer border, but for now, all my stencils are still packed, so I decided to leave it undone.  It is just two inches of unquilted border, so that should not be the end of the world even if I never get to it.

This little quilt will be enjoyed for years, and I am so happy to have finished it.

  1. After checking 5 quilt shops, I gave up and ordered Full House online. I can’t wait to make it, probably the way you made it into a neighborhood, and I also think I need that Blueberry Crumbcake fabric! Love it.
    Love me those Schnibbles patterns! I’ve made several and each one becomes my favorite until I make another!

    There is such a learning curve to machine quilting but I’m bound and determined to learn to quilt my own smaller projects. Did you use fusible batting or regular batting and pin, or baste?

  13. Love the table topper Nicole! Question for you though, what do you mean by “sink my knots and thread tails”? When I machine quilt I have knots on the back of my work. I would love a hint on how to make it look neater.

  25. Adorable Nicole! The BB fabric is perfect too. I made this pattern (the little ones) for a housewarming present for my sister with charms of Primitive Gatherings and I could hardly give it up. It is a great pattern for sure. Carrie outdid herself on this one.

  33. I am so sad and jealous! I have tried to get the full house pattern but we have no local quilt shop. I have called the nearest one over 5 hour return trip and they don’t have it either. They have said they would order it but heaven knows when I will get it. Until then I will continue to enjoy everyone else’s on-line and hopefully not get too much drool on the keyboard. Yours looks very cosy on your table with your lovely dishes.

  37. “Around the Hood” looks adorable, especially in your tablescape! I had to giggle imagining it on my table though – it would be splotched with stains and crumbs in no time! I tried to train all the men in my house to be neat and tidy at the table, but I failed! 🙂

  43. So cute, I too tried to make this version and decided I am mentally crazy when it comes to following more than one pattern! I did my houses too big, the squares too small etc etc – I got it done, but now feel like I need to start fresh all over again! I love how yours turned out though!

  47. Your quilt turned out so pretty. I was thinking about quilting mine myself with straight line quilting & wondering how it would look, so thanks for the picture of yours. I wasn’t sure I would do the AYOS this year, but they do get addicting to make & I keep buying charm packs, so it’s a great way to get them used.

  49. Love that Around the ‘Hood! And it goes so well with your blue dishes! You can hardly ever go wrong with a beautiful blue collection. I fondled some of the Blueberry Crumb Cake fabric last week and almost had to buy it! That is, until my budget jumped back in my face.

    Looks like something that might be easy for me to do, although I’m still a bit intimidated by quilting. I don’t have a lot of sewing experience and afraid I wouldn’t be able to do something like this.
    I guess I just need to jump in and give it a go. LOL!

  75. I really love how you did your topper!!! I HAVE to get those fabrics! It does make a great topper! I am excited to read you are doing the Year of Schnibbles and are doing a topper each month! I can’t wait to see what you do – I would love to make some toppers. I love how you took the pillow that Carrie did and made a topper out of it! Brilliant! Thanks for all the help on machine quilting. I am sooo intimidated but I think the cross hatching is a great place to start – and on a topper will be great. Your table looks wonderful and I am inspired!!! Thanks for all you share!!! So glad you are back!
