It isn't too early to start dreaming of Halloween and Autumn projects!
Look at this incredibly adorable quilting/embroidery pattern by Crabapple Hill. It is called Which Witch's Boot, and was designed by Meg Hawkey. I took a picture of the quilt when I stopped by Thimble Creek in Concord on my road trip over the past weekend.
The embroidery is enhanced by a technique that is new to me, but catching on fast in my area. It is a technique that uses crayons to softly add in additional color to the embroidery design. You first go over the area to be tinted with a white crayon, then carefully shade in your design area with the colors of your choice (applied on top of the white crayoned areas). The crayon color is then heat set with your iron, and you achieve this lovely water color effect. In the design above, you can see that the pumpkins have been tinted, but so has the boot–ever so subtly.
Isn't it a pretty effect? Once you get the areas colored in, you then proceed with your embroidery. I think this design is so darn cute.
Now tell me, where am I going to find those perfect vintagey Halloween fabrics?

Too cute!! I really enjoy embroidery but wonder if I need yet another Halloween wall hanging? Perhaps I do!
You’re so good a fabric selection, whatever fabrics you choose will make your similar quilt look great. Fret not!
The crayon technique is very interesting!
Hugs!

That is so cute and I think color is more important than print.

Check out Jo Morton’s Carolina fabric line. It has some wonderful orange and blacks that ‘speak’ vintage Halloween to me.

That is darling. You’ll have a great time doing it. And embroidery is great to pick up and just do a few minutes at a time, here and there.

This is really an adorable Halloween project, and I like the subtle effect of the crayon tinting.

I have done a similar technique using colored chalked. Although when using chalk, you doing it after everything else is done, embroidery, piecing, quilting, binding, washing, etc. The item is not washable after chalking. Is is washable after doing this crayon technique? Why do you color it first with the white crayon?

Very cute! I have used crayons on some of my embroidery projects, but I’ve not colored with white first. Does that just make the color lighter?

I love Meg Hawkey’s designs, Nicole – I’ve done quite a few – and the crayon coloring is lots of fun! I know you’ll enjoy sitting and stitching on this while baby granddaughter sleeps quietly next to you ;>)
Cheers!

That is just the cutest pattern. I’m very intrigued by that crayon technique, does it stand the test of time?
Thimble Creek is a great stop.
I have no suggestions for a great vintage halloween fabric, if you find one please share it with us all!

I love that pattern, I almost bought it as I was just as Thimble Creek yesterday! I bought two of Meg’s new patterns (one Halloween of course) and a Christmas one. I have not tried that crayon technique, but I have friends who have done it and love it! Can’t wait to see what you get…Thimble Creek usually has great repro prints and they love Halloween so I’m sure they’ll get something in.

I’m thinking that for vintagey fabric you might like Moda’s “Halloween Night” by Minick & Simpson. It’s from last fall, but there’s still a good selection at Hollyhill Quilt Shoppe or on eBay. It’s dirty oranges, purples, chartreuses and blacks.

The technique you describe is one that has been in my area for at least 7 years so it was really interesting to hear that it is new to your area…it’s weird how slow new ideas travel through the country sometimes. Now, I HAVE to order that boot pattern!!! Thanks for introducing it to us!

Hi Nicole. I’m sure you’re pretty busy answering some of these inquiries. I really really want to know about the color crayon technique. Can you point us in the direction of a website or advice, please?

That is a cute pattern. I have used the crayons to shade embroidery before, but never heard of coloring with a white crayon first. I am going to have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

Wow! This is so cute. Thanks for sharing the process to add the color. I’ve not tried that technique.
