Blissful Blossoms Done

002
Nothing was going to stop me from finishing up this Sweet Little Blossoms quilt this weekend.  The pattern by that name is designed by Margot Languedoc of The Pattern Basket.  It is such a sweet and whimsical design, and perfect for the red, white and aqua nursery Sara is planning for Baby E.

The quilt was super fun to piece, with so many options for making the flower blocks and different flower centers out of Bonnie and Camille's fabulous Bliss fabric collection.  The scalloped border was very easy to piece and I love the effect of it over all.  I think it really plays up and accents the flowers beautifully.

I had hoped to get it in the mail to Linda of The Quilted Pineapple for quilting, but I had a slight miscalculation with my backing.  As do most long arm quilters, Linda prefers that quilt backings be a full four inches wider/longer on each side than the quilt top, for ease in loading it onto the long arm machine.  Somehow my quilt is only two inches wider than the quilt top on the two sides.  The top and bottom are fine, it is just the sides that are short.  I don't know if Linda can work with the backing being smaller than she likes.  I may have to order more backing and redo it.  Bother.

Measure twice, cut once.

Added later:  Linda says she will try to work with my slightly too narrow backing!!!  Woo hoo!  Off it goes to her without delay.  I am so happy!

  1. I am a longarm quilter, too, and have worked out a situation like yours by basting muslin to the sides of the backing that were short. The muslin doesn’t get quilted into the quilt but provides the area I need to grip. Maybe this would work for you?

  5. Just adorable Nicole! This one has to be my absolute favourite of all the baby quilts you’ve made so far – and you even made it in my all-time favourite fabric line! Gorgeous!!

  7. Love the cute baby quilt! But, as Yogi Berra said, “Deja vu all over again!” I feel your pain! I was working on the back for my Scrap Basket Sensations Picnic quilt last week and was unhappy to discover I hadn’t allowed for enough fabric at the top and bottom to make the 4″ for my machine quilter. I finally figured it out the next day, but it was maddening!

  9. The quilt is adorable! Could you add a strip of fabrics from the front into the back to make it the right size? I can’t wait to see it quilted – Linda’s quilting is amazing!
P.S. Those baby clothes are just fabulous!

  11. Just gorgeous, Nicole! I love the border!! The backing is fine!! Honest!! You won’t need to order more fabric. I have a little trick that I can do that makes it a simple fix if I need to. Maybe I’ll be able to blog about it! 🙂

  15. LOVE Sweet Little Blossoms and that scalloped border!!! I see that border on a quilt of mine in the near future! Cheers that Linda can work with your backing fabric size.
I pick up my Single Irish Chain quilt from the quilter later this week and I’m so excited! Yesterday I put a wide sage border on my Roses in Winter UFO so that top is finished – unless it seems to need another border …!
    Hugs!

  17. Adorable, adorable. Lucky Baby E!!!
As in some of the other posted comments, adding the extra needed muslin fabric on the sides does work. I have done it often with some of my quilts going to a long arm quilter. So, get that quilt in the mail and no more fretting!

  25. It’s simply adorable! What a lucky little girl and you’ll have to provide pictures once it’s been quilted.

  27. Sometimes if the backing is just a little too small, but still wider than the top, you can sew strips of muslin on them and then take them off after the quilting is done. It’s adorable!!!

  29. I just knew that Sweet little blossoms pattern would look so cute when done! “Blissful Blossoms” what an absolute perfect name!
Glad that Linda can make it work so that you don’t have to order more fabric. Maybe she’s doing a similar trick like Jean mentioned above with the muslin.

  31. What a cute quilt! That border is so nice and I love you don’t have to applique it to get that scalloped look! Great that things worked out for your backing, woohoo is right!

  33. Oh I just LOVE this quilt! I knew when you first posted a picture of the first blocks you made that I was gona try this one…now I absolutely MUST do this quilt!!! 🙂 I usually do what several of the other gals do..just add a piece of inexpensive muslin all around the edges and then once it is quilted take it off. I attach it with a long basting stitch (#5 on my machine) and it comes off without too much fuss. That way you don’t waste good fabric on all that 4 inch allowance.

  35. Glad to see the update that Linda will work with it – I usually can make it work if the short part is on the sides, but if you get stuck like that again, you could always add a couple inches of muslin to either side to add the extra amount, then cut that off when you get it back (ask me how I learned that ;).
