All Wrapped Up!

007
I swear, this quilt  made itself.  I LOVE this quilt.

It is from a pattern by Artichoke Collection called All Wrapped Up.  Not sure if you if you can find the pattern any more.  I was told the partners who were Artichoke Collection split up.  🙁

The applique was super simple, but for some reason (probably because I do applique so infrequently) I always feel as if I am reinventing the wheel whenever I do it.  I used to use a fabulous tutorial by Barbara Brandeburg of Cabbage Rose, but she lost all her old blog posts and it is gone gone gone.  I had my Steam A Seam Lite, and a marking pen and knew I had to use my reverse foot number 1 on the Bernina.  I set the machine to the blanket stitch and was good to go.

I did kind of mess up my iron with the fusible web.  It was too late by the time I remembered that I had bought an Applique Pressing Sheet at PIQF last October.  Oh dear.  Well, I did get the pressing sheet out and it does work marvelously.  You place it over the applique pieces and press, thereby not letting any residue get on your iron.  It is made of some sort of space age material that things don't stick to and it can withstand high heat.

There are other things you can do with the sheet that sound pretty wonderful.  Supposedly you can lay out all your applique pieces and fuse them onto the Pressing Sheet so they all stick together just the way you want them to for your final design.  You can then lift the whole thing off the sheet an position the applique pieces in their entirety on your background fabric.  I am not that advanced yet, so you will have to read up on how to do it!  There is at least one good tutorial on You Tube if you search for Applique Pressing Sheet tutorials.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Hope your St. Patrick's Day was fun.  Did any of you try the Corned Beef recipe?  Hope that went well for you if you did~  Kathy didn't have such a good result.  She covered the pan when she put it in the oven with the Jack Daniels glaze all over the roast.  The lid blew off the pan, the over door blew open and her sweater was still smoldering when her husband ran in to see what had happened.  Those alcohol fumes are potent, friends.  Lordy, never cover the pan!  Poor Kathy.  She says she will live to quilt again, but this could have been a disaster!

  1. What are the dimensions of All Wrapped Up? It’s darling.
I have the pressing sheet – I think I’ve had it for about 15 years, and when I infrequently do applique, it is indeed a wonderful thing to have.

  9. The quilt turned out just darling!!!!! I took anapplique class and did what you said, put everything on top of the pressing sheet and fused it together, then put it on the background fabric. It worked wonderfully! Anne Sutton of Bunny Hills design has a very good tutorial on her blog on applique in case anyone needs one.

  11. That quilt is a-dor-a-ble!!!!! And, if you Google Dritz Iron-off Hot Iron Cleaner you’ll be able to get the gunk off your iron. It’s a 1 oz. tube and not expensive. A friend let me use a dab of her’s and it really works!! Have a great week-end!

  15. I made the corned beef recipe. FABULOUS! Hubby said it was the best he’s ever had and our company raved about it. I didn’t had any Jack Daniels so used Crown Royal. I will never make corned beef any other way now, thanks for the recipe.

  17. Someone needs to tell Kathy that the ‘incident’ was a SIGN that she shouldn’t be cooking….she should be SEWING! Sheesh, she should at least say she’s too afraid to cook for a week or two. PTCD(post traumatic cooking disorder).
I’ll sign her ‘absence’ slip for her. ;0
Nicole, to get the gunk off of your iron get out a couple of unused dryer sheets. Turn iron on to cotton and iron the sheets. It’s an old trick but it works for me.

  21. A tip for sticky gunk removal off of your iron’s sole plate… a fresh dryer sheet! With a hot iron, iron on the dryer sheet. Removes the gunk! Oh. And I see someone else had commented about the same tip! I did see in a quilt shop “special” sheets to do the same thing. 5 sheets for $6.00. Upon closer inspection, I realized they were dryer sheets! I can get a whole box for that price!

  23. Just a note ladies, to say that I survived the corned beef incident…the corned beef did too, but the sweater and t-shirt I was wearing did not. Ina, I like your style…I think a good case of PTCD is definitely in order. Thanks for the idea!
Nicole…I use the dryer sheets, too, to clean my iron. Works great!

  27. Yeah, but Kathy, how did the corned beef turn out? Just kidding.. So glad to hear you are okay! If you if ever get the nerve up to try the recipe again, try bringing the glaze just to a boil after whisking together. This helps to burn off the alcohol. I think it makes the glaze taste a little smoother.

  31. @Kate….the corned beef was wonderful…I will happily (and more knowledgably) make it again. Thanks for the suggestion of boiling the glaze first; that sounds like a wise idea!
