Burp Cloths

006
Since this baby of ours has suddenly become much more Real, I have gotten cracking making some baby related items.  I found the best tutorial for making burp cloths out of prefolded cloth diapers!  I have to share it with you:  Chickpea Sewing Studio.  Check it out.  I will be making these the next time I have a baby shower to go to, that is for sure.

I was so gung ho to get started on these, I plunged right in, first pre-washing my diapers and fat quarter squares for the project.  Diapers do not seem to be of the same quality as the ones I used thirty years ago, I must say.  This is what one looked like after laundering:

Whoa Nelly  That is some wrinkled mess.  The wrinkles did press out nicely and before you know it, I had my first little burp cloth.

005
I was pretty chuffed with myself until I turned it over and discovered this:

What the…  How did that happen?  I had sewn seven or eight Eventide center squares onto the back of my burp cloth.  What did Nicole learn from this experience?  Clean up your work space before you start a new project, you dim bulb.  It was easily repaired, however, and I was on my way stitching up a storm in no time.

I mostly used some new Kaffe Fasset yellow floral prints, but I have to say that cupcake fabric I tossed in has to be my favorite.  It was a fun and fast project and the dozen burp cloths I made in a couple of hours are now in the mail to Sara.

  5. Great gift idea Nicole. My daughters MIL made tons of them and (my) Sarah has really made good use of them.
I’m glad you shared your little oops moment…we all have them I guess…..I wonder where your mind was at!! It’s so exciting isn’t it!

  7. Those are so adorable. Sara will be so excited to see them. Almost too pretty to use! I laughed at the quilt pieces sewn onto the backside…that is so something I would do but would never ever think you would do something like that! I can’t wait to see what is up next for baby accessories…this is such fun!

  9. Love the burp cloths. I have made them by using novelty ribbon accross the bottom (trucks noah’s ark etc ) and lace for special days for girls. I am glad you are having fun.

  11. Precious! Love the cool fabrics, too. You’re in good company with that tricky sewing the squares to the back of your project. I did that once when I was machine quilting. What a pain!

  13. How cute – and useful – these burp cloths are and I ove the happy fabrics!
I’ve also sewn volunteer fabrics to the back of something I intended to sew. Bother, but not catastrophic!
    Hugs!

  15. They are beautiful & you can never have too many! There are 2 types of re-usable diapers- make sure you use the premium ones not the gauzy types.

  17. LOL about the scraps incorporated into the project.
Burp cloths, as in cloths made specifically for burping? Whah in mah day they never had no such newfangled thing. In mah day, we used a diaper all by its lonesome, and we were happy.

  19. Flannel makes a nice center piece for the burp cloths, then there is a really soft place for baby to lay her head.

  23. I’ll have to make some of those burp cloths.
I recently quilted some “extra” fabric onto the back of one of my quilts. No fun taking that out!

  25. The burp cloths are darling! I do have to thank you for the laugh with the little “extras” this morning!! Any of us who have been doing this for a while has done the same thing in one shape or form! It’s nice to know I’m in good company!

  27. Those burp cloths are always a hit with the new moms. I also add a few drool bibs to match and an over sized receiving blanket for swaddling. The fun starts now doesn’t it?

  29. Well, first of all, I laughed out loud when I saw the back. Looks like something I would do. The burp clothes are really cute. Mom to be will love them and use them a lot. Have a good day Nicole.

  31. What a great idea! Everything except sewing the other blocks on the underside! That sounds like a trick I would do! LOL

  33. I used the same tutorial when I made burp cloths! They are fun to look at. And I had the same problem after washing the diapers. What happened to quality? They used to be so thick and sturdy!
Anyway, nice job. I can see you are well on your way to putting quilt making in second place to baby items. That’s what good grandmas do!

  37. LOL! That is hilarious. Good thing it was an easy fix. I’ve occasionally sewn things into seams that did not belong there—worst when it is clothing! Cute burp cloths–I made some from matching receiving blankets for a niece who decorated with a certain theme. Pretty cheap to do!

  39. A ha ha ha! Those volunteer fabric pieces on the back certainly hit close to home! THanks for sharing your learning experience!
Burp cloths are adorable. I made my babies a few fancy ones for church and such…. with a bit of lace or striped edging. These look better!

  49. Those are so fun to make. I’ve been making them for a couple of years for every new baby that I know. I sew coordinating ribbon on top of the fabric sides & then tie 3 together with a ribbon. They really do make a great baby gift. I love the fabrics you use for yours.

  55. Fun! Burp cloths are the most used baby item in our house. And yours are so cute! Just a heads up, there are two different kinds of 6 ply diapers. I’ve found that the ones they sell at my target (Gerber ones that have a bias stripe in the texture) hold up much, much better and don’t get wrinkly. Hope you can track some down!
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again- she’s a lucky baby girl!

  59. There are different quality of diapers. They have a good quality at Wal-Mart. You can also order a good quality from “All About Blanks”, I think they are $16 for 12 diapers…Congratulations on your grandchild.

  61. Well of course I like the cupcake one the best also! I’ve never sewn blocks to the back of another project, I’m still laughing at that picture, but I have accidentally cut some blocks or fabric that were not where they should have been, it’s maddening.

  67. Those are really cute burp cloths. A lot more fun than using a plain diaper as we did back in the day. I’m wondering about the diaper you showed before and after ironing. I’m sure mom’s don’t have time for ironing diapers and burp cloths. (I well remember!) Is there a better quality fabric that would be suitable, perhaps some kind of toweling by the yard? Hmm, I’ll check out the infant and craft areas at Joann/Michael and see what they have. It wouldn’t hurt to have a few of these on hand for gifties.

  69. Congrats on the baby girl that will soon arrive! The burp cloths are my friends favorite gifts that I give, check at Target for the “thick” Gerber cloths. I usually buy a couple packs at a time becuase they don’t always have them in stock.
