I had to work all weekend, and this is as far as I had gotten with my Eventide quilt as of last Friday. Thanks to the miracle of my new design wall, I have had three days to walk past it, sit and contemplate it, and generally let it sink in with me.
And I am not sure I like it. Love my Ohio Star blocks, but the larger star pattern is just so In Your Face Pink and Blue. It is very 80's looking to me. Remember that color scheme? I bet you knew someone who had a blue sofa and pinky mauve carpet. It was an innovative and fun color combination then, but I am not ready to embrace it again just yet. Now that I have made that connection in my mind, I am thinking it is a No Go for my quilt.
Not that this color scheme doesn't work. I am just not sure it is going to work for me, right now. During the mid 80's I had some things going on in my life that were making me very unhappy. There were some very serious and sad conversations that took place on my blue, rose, and cream checked sofa. When I see that particular combination of colors, I have associations, you see.
So, I switched things up. Now the quilt seems more about the Ohio Star blocks and not the big secondary pattern. And of course the Pink and Blue is gone.
What do you think? I am interested in any and all opinions. Please weigh in and let me know your thoughts.

I LOVE your second choice. I thought the same thing when you showed the pink/blue that it took over the quilt and was distracting from the Ohio star blocks – LOVE this second choice, yet you can still see the secondary pattern of the larger stars. How/What did you make your design wall out of? I don’t actually have “design studio”, don’t have the room, so I use a 11 x 12 bedroom, so not a lot of space. To view my blocks I taped a piece of batting to the closet doors (I know not very appealing as my husband said), but it worked, just not a large enough space. Loving the sew along…you’re much further along than I am, going to have to pick up the pace. Thanks

I love the second choice! Besides, a quilt should be a thing that brings us joy, not bad memories. Can’t wait to see it completed.

Yes, yes, yes to your second choice for Eventide!! The first is lovely but the second is perfect.
You are amazing accomplishing so much, and I am feeling hopelessly fustrated. I just spent most of the day trying to make flying geese for Double Duty and only four have turned out and I don’t know why. All my measurements are correct, I also have Monique’s ruler and recut to her measurements but to no avail. Think I will work on the log cabins tomorrow instead. Maybe the elves will make the flying geese overnight for me.

I agree that the 2nd one is definitely better. It blends better and gives it a softer look.

Well Nicole, I liked the first one and my initial reaction was ‘oh no, you can’t change it’ and then I saw what you had done and liked it a whole lot better. The second one is going to be just fabulous!!

Wow! Such a totally different look! I loved the first one until I saw the second one, and now I REALLY want to make this quilt.

Good move! I have to agree with the other readers; #2 is much more pleasing. Amazing how changing that block makes a totally different “feel” to your quilt! Hat’s off to you for getting so much accomplished. I need to rub shoulders with you a bit in hopes your quilting energy will rub off. Keep up the good work!

I like both but the second one definitely “feels” more like your style. Obviously the first color combo would have always made you remember some past unpleasantness and that is not at all the purpose for creating a thing of beauty!

Donate/gift the first quilt to someone who will love it and let it go along with the bad/unpleasant memories. Neither are worth hanging onto as life is too short to make bad quilts or hang onto unpleasant memories.
I L-O-V-E the second choice and it will be your symbol for taking a step forward. Beautiful work. Judy C

LOL — you perfectly described my family room color scheme in my first house that I bought in 1982! teal couch and love seat, mauve carpeting and pale yellow walls. I think you made a good swap in colors. The newer quilt is much softer, more modern, and has the more “blended” look of the original design.

There is nothing wrong with the pink and blue except for the stark consistency in value. That uniformity grabs control of the entire top, and like you say, it dominates the whole piece – no wonder you are uncomfortable with it. The second quilt has a much lighter feel to it, but you have also played around with some variation in the fabrics you have chosen. Much more interesting effect, I say!

2nd version. Once I make a negative association with something it’s over!
LOVE the ohio star blocks
I love your second choice! We all lived through the blue and mauve era one way or another. You always come up with beautiful combinations.

I like the second one better too. But I can’t help but wonder what mixing the two would look like- scrappy. I had a pink, blue, and beige couch too. I finally located a pattern on line last night since my lqs had it backordered. Don’t know if I’ll be able to quilt along or not.

Wow what a difference! I love the second one as it really makes the Ohio Star pop. The blue in the first one was too predominate. This is going to be a beautiful quilt.

Love your second design. I’m using red, blue, brown and tan. I’ll have to make a block or two to make sure my quilt works. Love the blended look of your second. Thanks for sharing!

I like both BUT if number 1 gives you bad memory vibes…ditch it! Go for number 2….I made the mistake of following thru with a certain rug I hooked (no not latch hooking) and every time I walk on it that bad memory come back! So, go for the second choice!!!!!! Nuff said!
I much prefer the second set, with the lighter beige-ish stars; it looks fabulous! I had a chuckle over your reference to blue and mauve interior decorating colors from the 80’s – I remember it well, and also not fondly.

i like the second choice much better – the large blocks are more subtle just like in the original patter picture. i didn’t object to the color combination with the pink and blue, but the large ohio stars over powered the quilt.

I agree that your first picture is very in your face with colors that don’t strike me as “you.” I think your second photo is much prettier and the smaller stars seem to sparkle without having too much color from the larger stars detracting from them.

Here’s what I love about the second choice: You see those Ohio stars and then you start looking around and suddenly in DAWNS on you that there are those bigger stars, too, and oh isn’t that terrific!

Most definately on the 2nd choice… plus the first one looks too literal, obvious – here are large stars & small stars. With the second, the colors are better and the larger stars look like a secondary underlying/supporting role so more complementary & let competitition. Does this make sense?

Love the new version but I didn’t think “80’s” with the old version either.
It’s nice to be able to let it hang and make those changes before putting together the whole quilt.

They both are beautiful, they just emphasize different things. I don’t mind the pink and blue – they really aren’t those country colors – but they do take over the quilt. My favorite is the second.

The second choice is my choice (he, he) hands down. I love Ohio Stars so featuring them is a plus and you reward those who take the time to look a bit closer and longer at the quilt with that subtle cream/tan big background pattern Ohio Star.
P.S. Thanks for enlightening me why I get a little nauseous when I see light blue and pinky mauve. It’s the associations!

I like both.
For the pink/blue one, the borders will make all the difference in playing the pink or blue up or down. If it just doesn’t float your boat for those other reasons, that’s hunky dory!
The second is more calming and is lovely. Methinks some of the Ohio Star colors will need to be somewhere in the borders to give it balance.
Perhaps the large pink/blue Hourglass blocks will be more subtle in a scrappy Hourglass quilt?
I have design-wall envy you know!
Oh! My first two itty bitty quilts are now pictured in the Waiting for Assignment section of http://www.alzquilts.org and I’m so excited. They are quilts 6475 and 6476 and they’re no great shakes design-wise, but they’ll soon be working to find a cure for Alzheimers.
Hugs!

Both choices are beautiful. I’m a blue girl so have a soft spot for the first choice. But the second color scheme is much subtler in overall effect. And of course we don’t want a quilt to bring up sad memories over and over again! You have to go with what “speaks” to you as the right thing.

A much better choice. Until you mentioned the 80’s, I wasn’t sure why I did not like this quilt. And I think the blue and mauve is the answer. Your second choice is much more current!

Okay. Seems a bit redundant but the soft colors of the second quilt is a winner. I think the first one looked very hard (probably like the memories it rekindled) and the new version is just so peaceful. Good catch and great re-design.

I definitely prefer the second version – it’s much more blended which I think suits this beautiful pattern and allows the individual fabrics to sing in harmony with the others rather than individually (hope that makes sense!). Also, the larger stars are more subtle whereas the pink/blue large stars kind of poke you in the eye (which isn’t always a bad thing!) but you plainly don’t like it and I think you should go with your instinct! Good luck, your work is always gorgeous!

I think the second version is so much better. It’s a design and color combination that will look good forever where as the first version look dated. Good call.

Hi Nicole,
I love the second choice and thought that the first choice was a bit stark and to much contrast. Love how you played around with the colors a bit and it seems to flow much more like the pattern. Great job and I’m sure it will be a lot more fun for you. Associations whether good or not so good definitely color how we see things. Good for you that you were able to find that out before completing it.
Life is about flexibility and adapting. I also like how you were able to admit it and show us so that others can learn from it.

Not that I want to pile on or jump on the bandwagon, but the choice really is very simple — No. 2! Definitely No. 2.
Very pretty. Nicely done. 🙂

The second one is amazing! I wouldn’t have thought 80’s with the first, but once you said that it’s all I could see! If you have unpleasant memories associated with those colors…..change them 🙂 You will never be totally happy with that quilt if you don’t. I’m amazed at the difference the color change made! Wow! You are great with colors to be able to make a switch like that 🙂 Maybe I need a design wall!

So, as I was reading your post, I could only see the pink/blue variation and I was all like, “What?! That’s gorgeous! She’s crazy! Design wall = overthinking!” in my head, right? And then I read about your negative associations and I totally “got it”. And THEN I saw your new version….. it’s STUNNING! I don’t quite know how anything could be better than version #1, but then you busted out version #2 and omg, it’s amazing! Way to go!

Oh, I do like the second one much better. I saw the first and was like “Pshaw, she’s overreacting, that’s lovely…” Then I scrolled down and was like “oooooooh! Okay, now THAT is lovely.” So, yes, go with your instincts. In addition I think it helps evoke the soft subtle quality of the background design in the original. Gorgeous!

I love your first version and was sad to read you were unhappy with it and the colour associations. However I scrolled down with some trepidation and was surprised to find I liked version 2 even better!
Go with what makes you happy – you have to live with it!

Nicole, the second choice is the winner. I too had the blue and mauve color combo going on in the early 80’s. We bought a house with federal blue carpeting throughout with mauve in the bedrooms. We couldn’t afford to change it, so it dictated whatever we did. It was a happy day when we ripped it out.
Good work, carry on!

one of my very first quilts was mauve and dusty blues (a log cabin done around 1990) – I so agree with the others that the second one is a much better choice (and a color combo that is timeless!)

The blue and pink were lovely, but if it makes you sad then why bother continuing with that colour choice. Your second choice is perfect. I love the softness of the fabrics and it certainly showcases the stars. Good work!

The pink and blue was making the quilt look very soft and country style to me, but I didn’t have that mauve and blue horrid reaction that you did! Love the more neutral restart, very soothing.

Now this is a Nicole quilt!!!! Much better. I’m glad you change it before you sewed it and then it made you unhappy. Maybe the other blocks can be made into a charity quilt or something.
We all have to go forward and leave the past behind. Me, I had orange shag carpet! What was I thinking!!!

I LOVE the new combination! I like how it really shows off the Ohio Star blocks, but isn’t so subtle that you completely lose the effect of the large stars.

I agree with you 100%. The first one looks very dated and the second is fresh and vintage looking without looking old. Does that make sense?

#2 is gorgeous. I’m a quilter who would sew even if there were no color, and every fabric was a neutral of some sort. Love neutrals. Gorgeous quilts. And yours is going to be perfect!

Like the second! Awesome!

Something was bothering me about the first one and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. You are absolutely right. I didn’t like the pink blue meme first time around and still do not. Love both colors, just not together. Version #2 is much better.
How big are those hourglass blocks? You could probably make a Linus quilt from the pink and blue ones.

Number 2 without a doubt in my mind. I wasn’t keen on number 1. The fabric designs seemed too heavy although I liked the colours.
I hope you are happier with it now. It is going to be another beautiful quilt.

I liked the first choice and really can relate with certain things like fabric bring back memories that I’d rather not have! But when I saw the choice I fell in love with it! It’s wonderful to create new memories!
Have fun

It’s interesting…I looked at your two pictures and formulated my thoughts and then read your post and I too came to the same conclusion. The first colouring is very 1980’s where as your second layout is much more modern…very “Schnibbles” like if you know what I mean.

I just love your second choice!!! So beautiful! And not 80’s!

When I saw the pink and blue the first time, I had the same thoughts as you. I lie the second version a lot more.

The 2nd is moving in the right direction, I might add a little more “weight” to those sections so the Ohio stars are more balanced. Maybe a slightly darker tan, but it is looking great!

Wow, what a transformation! Looove the 2nd combination!!!

The second one is so calming and nurturing. It works much better than the first. I don’t know if anyone is ready for mauve and country blue yet. LOL!

I love the second choice. When I think 80’s ( and early 90’s ) I think “seafoam.” On the whole, I wish I had chosen a brighter color combo for Eventide and not stayed so safe. But I’m not energetic enough to start over!!!!
I’m not sure if I am going to make any Ohio star blocks with half square triangle corners. It seems like the points of the big stars skew off a bit when I add those.

Hi Nicole, I loved your first choice until I saw the second and I love your second choice. It’s rather classy!

I agree that a quilt should be about what’s comforting to you. Your first color choice was fine, but it was a little dated. Really like the second option.

Oh my goodness – number two is awesome! To tell you the truth? I really thought the first version was way outside your color palette, Nicole, but I thought maybe it was just the way my computer was displaying the colors. I like the first one, but #2 really shines!
Cheers!

Definitely love the second choice. It’s looking great!
I had the country blue/mauve/peach color scheme in 1993. It was allllllll the rage. 🙂

I’m with the majority…the second one is awesome! Just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it did 🙂 I say you keep the pink/blue large triangles and use them with your leftover star blocks “on crack”. Then you’ll have two Eventides!

Yep! Country blue and mauve scream the ’80’s!!! Weren’t we all good little “Stepford Wives” to use them in our homes??!!! hahahaha!!! We even had mauve carpet to go with the whole decor thing!! and, now that I really think about it there was a country blue area rug in the family room! Go with the second colorscape for your quilt–much more ‘now’ and way more YOU!!! Jan

Your second choice is much better. I loathe pink and blue together…reminds me too much of my MIL!

The first one really was from the past. The second one is fresh and more sparkling.

I didn’t think the blue & pink of the first one was “in your face” at all. The second is just lovely, though and I wouldn’t mind having that one at all !!. I think the final look of the first quilt could be changed quite a bit based on the selection of border(s) material.

I like them both but the second one is stunning.

I agree with you about the pink and blue… it dates the quilt beyond its time! Love the new color choices!!

I think the large stars are secondary in the pattern. I like them better in the second set because they are more subtle and well, secondary.

While I really liked your beginning on this quilt…I must say I love the changes, it is much more subtle and really makes the stars shine.

I love the softer second choice. Do not use the first if it reminds you of some unhappy times. The second version is wonderful.

Both are beautiful, but I, too like the second best. It’s very soothing and beautiful.
Isn’t strange how certain things can trigger associations and feelings from our past?? Sometimes good and sometimes not. I hate the latter because it can ruin something that would otherwise be wonderful. Go with the second choice because you will always make that association. it’s wonderful! 🙂

I thought the first one was very pretty and then I scrolled down to your second picture. I love the muted shades. I am thinking of doing a ‘beige’ quilt myself. I want muted tones and very low contrast but enough to see the pattern… You have made a great change to this quilt!

I wasn’t sure at first why you were unhappy with your first choice, but actually I have never been into pink and blue. I definately like your second choice better. Good choice!

Please use the second choice. I too remember the blue and rose colors of the 80’s! What were we thinking? Lets not forget about those bunny rabbits! Love your second quilt!

Well, you already have consensus here but still, I’ll weigh in: the first version is really quite nice and the second one makes my heart go ping! LOVE it!!
