Belle Meade, Bali Pops and Scrap Basket Sensations

003
I know, you think you have seen this picture before.  But you haven't.  This is a picture of 29 completed Belle Meade blocks!  Woo hoo!  My plan is to finish the last 12 tomorrow and start laying out the blocks.  Thelma is ahead of me, but is patiently waiting for me to catch up.

I have not yet decided what fabric to use for the setting triangles.  I have the tan, I have the red, and just in case, I have the blue!  No worries, I will come up with just the right thing, with all those choices.

But look….This came in the mail today, from Kim Brackett, the author herself!!!  Scrap Basket Sensations.

005

If you have not yet ordered this book, you must do so.  And if you don't have her first book Scrap Basket Surprises, you definitely need that as well.  Have a drawer or shelf full of jelly rolls?  Don't have a clue what to do with them?  Well, Kim's two books are the answer you have been waiting for.  Tons of ideas for using those 2 1/2 inch strips.  Kim has a great blog called Magnolia Bay Quilts, and you will enjoy reading her recent posts.  In addition, some bloggers you may be acquainted with made some of the projects in her new book!  Check it out.

I recently picked up a gorgeous Bali Pop (40 coordinated batiks) in a color called Grasshopper, that I think would be amazing done up in one of Kim's quilt patterns.

004
Dreamy, dreamy colors, with just a hint of purple things interesting.

Here are a couple of the patterns in Kim's new book that I think would be fantastic.

006
Over and Under.  Or………..

007
Island Chain.  Actually, I may do Island Chain in a collection of burgundy and pink batiks called Zinfandel.  Wow, it has been a long time since I worked with batiks, and I hear them calling my name!

If you are wondering why Kim sent me a copy of her amazing book, Scrap Basket Sensations, it is because she is planning a blogging event to promote it, and asked me to participate.  I don't have the details yet, but stay tuned for more information.  I will also be doing a give away of the copy of the book that I bought before Kim sent me one (Grin), so if you are interested in getting one, leave a comment to this post and on Friday I will announce the winner!

  9. Thanks for giving away the “spare” book. I will have to look for the first book and create some 2 1/2 strips from scraps.

  11. Hi Nicole, your blocks are looking great and so is the batik fabric you bought. Wish I had bought some Batiks when I was in Bali years ago but I was not yet “into” quilting at the time. I’d love to win the book as the Over and Under quilt looks intriguing.

  13. Hi Nicole,
I’m finally learning how to comment on a blog. Your blocks are beautiful and I just love the Rural Jardin fabric line. I would love a copy of the book because I’m always wondering what to do with the Jelly Rolls I have. I read your blog every morning and I really enjoy it. How’s the baby quilt coming?

  23. I bought Scrap Basket Surprises on a road trip with my quilty friends. We all looked at it on the way home (to Washington DC area) and my friends all bought a copy for themselves when we got home. I would LOVE to win a copy of Kim’s new book, and will watch for the blog event. Thanks for the opportunity!

  25. I loved her first book so I’m sure I will feel the same about this one. I think Bali Pops are so pretty!! I really like the Grasshoper with just a touch of purple. Perfect. I was just admiring Zinfandel when I was at the shop Tuesday. Also would be gorgeous in that pattern.

  27. I have Kim’s first book and it is a beauty. I haven’t decided how to use my jelly rolls of Pure and Allspice Tapestry.Your Belle Meade is coming along quickly. Don’t you tire of doing the same block over and over? Sometimes one just needs a break to dream and plan something else.

  35. One just can’t have too many quilt books, so thank you, Nicole, for the drawing!! I’ve succumbed to the Bali Pops a few times, with no clear plan on using them, so this will be inspiration! I, too, love reading your blog.
    Happy Quilting!!!

  37. I love Kim’s blog (and her helper cat!) I think that the “over and under” would be gorgeous in the greens and purples – very spring-y without being overly sweet or Easter-y
I’ve never worked with Bali Pops or batiks in general, but the colors are so gorgeous!

What a great book! If you can believe it I have never, ever bought a fabric jelly roll. Will have to reconsider!
    Hugs!

  71. Nicole, Grasshopper is so you! I just love how the Bali Pops don’t have those horrible fringed edges like the Moda precuts….hello Moda, are you listening!!
I’m currently over my love for batiks, but am holding on to my limited stash, maybe seeing something new and fresh will get me excited about them again.
29 Belle Meade blocks down, only 12 more to go, great job!

  73. I just finished “bali sea star” from Kim’s previous book – scrap basket surprises. I did not use a jelly roll but instead used a group of fat quarters that a friend gave me that she had no clue what to do with. It turned out great. Can’t wait to do another quilt from one of her books.

I would love to own Kim’s newest … the one quilt you show “Over and Under” would definitely be on the make do list.

  85. My copy of Kim’s new book came in the mail yesterday. I have gone over and over it already. I think I need to take her two books and have one of those lay-open spines placed in them or they will be thumbworn. I am on quilt #7 out of her first book and I’m just so excited about all the possibilities in the second book. Loved your ideas with the Bali pops. They would be lovely in the quilts you suggested. I love the “Nana Girl” quilt. I think I will be quilting for a long time to come. Your Belle Meade will be quite the achievement. I have to go see how Thelma’s is turning out.

  91. Hey Nicole!
I would like to win the book. I was going to go to Kim’s class this Saturday, but our septic tank decided to eat up any extra money, so the free book with class thing has evaporated. I’m really disappointed, but c’est la vie.
Lucky you getting the offer to be in on the blog event!

Have not used jelly rolls yet, but would love to begin experimenting with them. Your Grasshopper looks so ….. ethereal. (It also reminds me of Kane and his master in the TV show… LOL).

  161. My goal for this year is to make 15 lap quilts for all my nieces and nephews for Christmas. Not sure if I’ll make it, but I’ll sure try. I have 2 patterns picked out from Kim’s first book, and from the peak you gave us, I may have to get the second book for a couple more patterns!! Looking forward to see what Kim does with her blogging event! Love your Belle Meade.
