A Year of Quilts

2010 was a pretty good year for quilts, I guess.  I realize now that I had a major dry spell during part of the year when we were getting our house ready to sell and when we had it listed for sale.  Even though I didn't accomplish as much as I would have liked,  I thought a good way to say goodbye to 2010 would be to show you some of my accomplishments in 2010.

January:

002
The Red and White Snowball challenge quilt, organized by Allyson of Fat Cat Quilts.  This was a great project and a number of lovely people joined in.

001
I can't really say that this was a "favorite".  It was a Web Sampler BOM from a couple of years ago.  Terrible finishing instructions, so I put it away and nearly never finished it.  Now that it is finished, I have little desire to pay for having it quilted.  Those borders left a very bad taste in my mouth.  Time will tell if it ever truly gets finished.

February:

001
Toulouse.  This was a sew along with Lisa and Thelma, and I have to say, I LOVE this quilt.  Can you believe it isn't quilted yet?  I must do something about that.

March:

003
The Love Quilt.  Ahren took this to Ireland to live with his girlfriend Mary Ann.

001
This was a stunt sewing project for Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.  It is a pattern called Shortline.  There are two versions of this quilt.  This was the easy one.   Isn't that quilting beautiful?

003
This is a close up of the trickier version.  The strips are 1 1/2" wide!  Amazing quilting!

April:

6a00d8341cdb3f53ef01348562be54970c-500wi

Oooh La La.  This was a graduation gift for my sweet niece Camille.  I finished it in April and sent it off for quilting.  Got it back in time to give it to her in June.  Love this quilt, and it couldn't have gone to a more deserving young lady.

002
Flowers for Clara.  I got this back from my quilter in April, but actually finished the quilt earlier in the year.  I have to say this is my second favorite quilt of 2010.

May:

001

Madeline.  My third favorite quilt of 2010.  I enlarged a Schnibble pattern (Miss Rosie's Quilt Co) of the same name, and used the wonderful Rouenneries fabric by French General.

006

Elizabeth.  My number one favorite quilt of 2010.  By a Miss Rosie pattern of the same name and also made with the Rouenneries collection by French General.  They look so different, don't they?  Both Madeline and Elizabeth are quilted and being lovingly used.

June:

001
Just a little table topper for my niece's shower.  A Schnibbles pattern called State Fair, by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.

003
Got this back from the quilter this month.  Prairie Paisley. Fabric by Minick and Simpson for Moda, pattern in a magazine.

005
Moor is Moor.  Pattern is Summerwinds by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.  Fabric is Wuthering Heights by 3 Sisters for Moda.

001
Stargazer.  Various Fig Tree fabrics, and a pattern from a magazine.  I loved this so much I made a second version in another color way.

001

July:

I finished no quilts in July.  July will be remembered as the month we did not sell our house.  July will also be remembered as the month I discovered Marshalls and Home Goods and compulsively bought dishes.

August:

001
Roundabout.  A Schnibble pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Co.  Saltbox Harvest fabric–Deb Strain for Moda.

Not much to show for August.  Also to be remembered as the month we did not sell our house.

September:

Another month in which our house did not sell.  When your house is for sale, you cannot have quilting projects spread out all over the place.  I did travel to Illinois this month with my friends Lisa and Thelma, met up with Carrie and Monique and did some serious shopping.  Oh, and I re-discovered embroidery!

October:

Do you see a trend developing here?

November:

Ummmm?

December:

Back in the game.

002
Route 44.  A Miss Rosie pattern that brought me to my knees.  Whimper.  This occupied most of November.

004
Blueberry Mocha Trails, a super fun sew along with Thelma.  Pattern by A Graceful Stitch.

Aside from these two finished quilt tops, December is to be remembered as the month of the Zippy Bags.

004

Lesson learned?  Don't let anything (like trying to sell your house) get in the way of your quilting!  Sew everyday and try to finish something every month.  So, there you have it, my resolution for 2011, to be known as The Year of the Baby.

Happy New Year, dear Friends!

  1. Wow Nicole what a year of accomplishments! I know it’s frustrating when life gets in the way of quilting…as it did way too often for me in 2010. I’m hoping to get back to accomplishing at least one quilt a month in 2011.

  3. Gorgeous quilts, I tried to pick a favorite, thought about it carefully, looked at them all several times, and this is my favorite: ALL OF THEM. Sorry, can’t choose just one. I am so looking forward to the Year of the Baby!! Happy New Years to you and yours from me and mine!

  5. I am very, very impressed! Thank you for showing all of your lovely quilts. Every year in January, I write a list called “Quilt Goals” and I check off my completions. With a very demanding full time job, I do the best I can, but no where near your finishes. I loved your zippy bags also! You are so talented and inspiring. I am looking forward to seeing your baby quilts in the coming year! Thanks for a great blog. Wishing you peace, love and lots of time to sew in 2011!

  7. In 2011 I aspire to accomplish half of what you accomplished in 2010 – although I have to admit to being much more productive when my kids were younger. You would think it would be the other way around. Anyway, beautiful quilts! I loved them all – even the ones that challenged you. I have a quilt, not quite finished, like the one February one you have. I got it back from the quilter’s, didn’t like the quilting, and have never finished it – it’s been 10 years. I’ve even though of picking out the quilting – a truly insane thought! Happy New Year!

  9. I love everything that you completed this year. Fabulous fabulous stuff there. I too had a dryspell during the same months this year. I wasn’t selling a house, but I was…well…I don’t have an excuse. But thankfully, I too am back in the sewing room again and loving every second!

  11. They are all beautiful, but the Miss Rosie patterns and the reds really stand out for me. I finished Elizabeth after seeing yours, and it’s on my bed right now. Oh, and plan for the month of the baby to be minus any quilting- much better than selling a house.

  15. How fun to revisit your gorgeous quilts!!
Why not plan on giving away the quilt you struggled with and don’t like that much. Or get it quilted and when you need a wedding gift you’ll have one ready to go!!

  19. Thanks for sharing these pictures again, Nicole! My favorite is still the Snowball quilt which inspired me to purchase Evelyn Sloppy’s book. I still haven’t made my snowball quilt, but maybe it will get done in 2011. . .

  21. LOVED seeing the quilts. They are all beautiful. I am wondering about the Star Gazer pattern, do you remember the magazine it was in? I probably have the magazine, if you could just point me in the right direction. Thanks for sharing all the pictures once again and I LOVE your resolution for 2011. Can’t wait to hear more about that baby…

  23. You are Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company’s best advertisement…I can certainly see why she uses you for her ‘stunt’ sewing. Love your work…those of us that quilt vicariously thru your blog are amazed over all that you did finish this year. Here’s to a happy, and productive new year.

  25. I am just in awe of how many quilts you finished! I feel like I’ve really accomplished something if I get one completed, though I did make several zippy strippy bags for Christmas gifts. Red is my favorite color and it looks like it’s one of yours also. You inspire me to get moving and try to sew something at least once a week! Your quilts are all absolutely gorgeous!!

  27. What a great way to start my last day in this decade–with a lovely quilt show of your quilts.
I wish I had some of your energy, even with the interruption of selling a house, for you seem to get so much more done that the average Jane. It’s inspiration!
Thanks for posting all of these, and Happy New Year to you and your family!

  37. You had several months off and accomplished much more than I. Your quilts are beautiful. It was hard to pick favorites, but I still clearly remember the first post on your snowball quilt and fell in love with it immediately. It’s still fabulous.

  39. Wow! If I could only do half as much as you I would be a happy girl. My sewing room is in quite a mess. My husband got me a new tv for the wall and then decided he couldn’t put it up till he painted. Yikes! I have been moving stuff out and when I went to dinner with friends he just pulled everything out to the middle of the floor. Who knows when it will get back to normal. I guess this will be a good chance to clean things out. But I would rather be sewing. lol

Thanks for making 2010 such a special one for me, Nicole! Your new friendship is a cherished one! A very Happy New Year to you and your family. I have a good feeling 2011 is going to be one you’ll never forget, Grandma!

I love the Elizabeth quilt too!

  49. Amazing that you can make that many full size quilts. I’ll never be able to do that! My favorite? Toulouse! But then again there is Madeline….Elizabeth….Prairie Paisley…..
If you need room storing them, I’ll be glad to help out, nice person that I am! LOL!
Have a Happy New Year getting ready for that little bundle.

  51. Nice work! I just discovered your blog this year and have enjoyed reading it – finishing months and non-finishing months alike. I crochet and I did not finish anything this year. This was the year of the “frustrated crafter.” I did, however, read 35 books.

  53. Well, you are amazingly prolific in comparison to me and I did not have house-sellling thing going on. That job does get in the way though (LOL). I still love your Madeline quilt.

  57. I think that “web sampler” is just gorgeous! I would maybe put one more border on it – a red print of some kind. I hope it gets quilted someday.
You’ve been much more prolific than I could even hope to be this past year – all of them beauties!

I love star quilts! Thanks for always sharing your projects with us all. Very inspiring. Happy New Year!

Nicole, have a wonderful 2011. So much is in store for your family with Ahren’s lovely girlfriend and your new little grandbaby coming. What a great year this will be. Lots to remember! Start planning those wedding and baby quilts.

  73. Wow Nicole, Congratulations on so many beautiful finishes in 2010. It was wonderful to see you accomplishments for the year. I, on the other hand, finished only one quilt…no, two, one very large and the other very small, then a few table toppers. Rough year with health issues and not having a sewing room so everything was spread throughout the house and I was always playing search and find when I needed quilting or stitching supplies. I did start trying to re-teach my hands the tricks of very simple embroidery stitches cause I fell in love with quilts that include stitchery blocks, AND…while I recuperated from surgery and banned from my sewing machine for over 4 months, I had to do something creative or go crazy. My stitches aren’t as straight and lovely as they once were and probably never will be but at least I am stitching! Now about the second quilt you show in your finishes…you say you just don’t like it and I can’t think why! I adore it! The colors and pattern bring to mind the Native American designs that I love so much. (I actually have a small collection of Native American items that sit atop our entertainment center that my hubby calls the ‘Sacred Burial Ground’, LOL. Anyway, I really believe (as I already said) that the fabric collection you used along with the pattern, especially those borders you dislike so much, give it that Native American appearance that I love so much. I do hope you have it quilted one day and find that you are over the moon delighted with it. Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt parade, I really enjoyed it and think they are all beautiful. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. Of course, I see some baby quilts in your future for 2011!!! *and since I have a new sewing room all set up (finally) I hope to do lots more sewing in 2011* Happy New Year and Big Hugs…

  75. Okay Nicole, warning – long comment.
First off – congratulations on your new status as Grandma-to-be. And what a cool way you were told. I had a very hard time getting pregnant and told my parents by slipping the ultrasound in with some pictures from my Grandpa’s house and showed my parents…my mom didn’t get it right away. How exciting for you and your family.
Secondly, thank you for the inspiration you have shared with me (and other followers, I’m sure). I started following your blog about March and boy, have you made my “wish list” of fabrics and quilt patterns grow!
Thanks for the chuckle about your customers this week – I know there’s a big reason I don’t work retail.
Hope your new year was very happy! May 2011 bring you much joy, peace and happiness. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you this year, through your blog, and I look forward to reading on in 2011!!

  77. Oh my goodness! How much you have accomplished in 1 year. I don’t think I have accomplished that much in the 30 years I have been quilting (off and on). What wonderfully, beautiful quilts. I am most partial to any of them that have stars. but my favorite would have to be–OH GOOD LORD–who am I kidding, I can’t choose just one. Kind of like eating Ruffles potatoe chips–bet you can’t choose just one!
What a wonderful year you have had. Hope you have a most productive 2011. Now I must go off and do something. I need to catch up!!

  91. Considering all the empty months you had, you had a very successful year in my opinion. Your quilts are a treat to see. Thanks for sharing.
