Repeat After Me:

I am not a baker.  I am not a baker.  I am not a baker.

This unbelievable mess is the cheesecake I was making for Christmas dinner.

How could such a thing come to pass?  Well, I'll tell you.  Someone put my spring-form pan back together after it was washed, and got the bottom section in upside down.

And when I was putting it into the 350 degree oven, the bottom of the pan fell right out.  Sploof.

The person who put the pan together wrong spent about an hour and a half cleaning up this colossal mess, while I went to the store on Christmas Eve for more ingredients.  Which also took about an hour and half.

He actually had to *take the oven doors off* to clean up all the goo.  The sugary liquid not only went all over the upper oven, but leaked down into the lower one as well.  When it happened, I just stared at the disaster without a clue how to begin cleaning it up.  If I had been alone, I think I would have picked up my purse, gone out to the car, and driven away from the house, never to be heard from again.  I would have started up a new, baking free life some where in Middle America.

All's well that ends well, though.  Ovens got cleaned, cheesecake (and pumpkin pie, and a cranberry coffee cake) got made.

Lol.  All in all, this was a pretty memorable Christmas!

  1. There are some ‘memorable’ holidays….like the one my MIL put the turkey in the oven and then forgot to turn it on. 25 hungry guests and a raw bird!

  3. and you’re going to be a grandma!!! I had an oven issue myself, I made Pioneer Woman Carmel Apple Cinnamon Buns, and the yummy topping overflowed big time and lesson learned here but instead of cooling oven, scraping mess up I put the oven cleaner on, the smoke was horrible…. but the buns were really good.

  5. Oh! Big hugs! I think I would have burst into tears on the spot! Cheers for the noble clean-up crew of one who stepped up to the plate (or the oven door). I’d leave the spring form pan in obvious pieces for storage so you have to put it together just before use.
May I have the recipe for the cranberry coffee cake please? I have fresh cranberries to use and that sounds delicious. All of your baked goods look delicious. You are a baker after all!
DS1’s quilt arrived safely a week after it was mailed (priority). I cannot tell you how fall-over relieved I am!
    Hugs!

  9. I’ve only ever made one cheesecake… two weeks ago. My mother-in-law gave me the spring form pan years ago and honestly I wouldn’t know if the bottom was in upside down or not.
Sorry to hear about the spill… and excited to hear about the grand!!!!
    Hugs!

  11. I had a kitchen disaster this year too. Threw out the ham because I did not realize it was an uncured fully cooked spiral ham. It was supposed to be cured. Dry, dry, dry with no flavor. Thank goodness for some t-bone steaks in the freezer. Memorable Christmases all around!

  13. Wow, I have a pan that I have only used once. Not sure how it was put back together. I am so glad I have read your post. Wow…. I am glad to hear that all turned out well even though there was a huge mess involved. Have a good week.

  19. Oh, this brings back memories. It was Thanksgiving eve, probably 20 years ago. I was making a pumpkin cheesecake (new recipe, first time making it). I was talking to my brother late at night, time for the cheesecake to come out of the oven. I tried to do it one-handed with the phone half under my chin. Lost control, flipped the cooked cheesecake over, dropped through the rack into the heating element. Ew. Said a bad word. No Cheesecake. Big Mess. You have my sympathy!

  21. In the end, your baking treats looked fabulous though! I know exactly what you are talking about! Plenty of times i’ve just stood there staring at a mess, not knowing where to begin!! LOL! It’s the worst feeling!

  23. I felt your pain!!!! About 20 plus years ago, did the same thing….was my fault……never again! Now, when making cheesecake I always put it on a cookie sheet, then in the oven……just in case! Oh, my spring-form bottom was in right….for some reason it fell out…………… Congratulations on the wonderful news!

  25. We moved when I was 5 away from my parents home town. That year for Thanksgiving was my Mom’s first family dinner, and she had everyone come up. New house, new kitchen. And, she dropped the sweet potatoes as she removed them from the oven. All over the floor, mixed with the pyrex dish shards. Poor Mom. She had help too. Her sisters banded together and helped clean it up.
Ain’t family wonderful! You desserts look delicious!

  27. I was once helping Andy cook a pan of muffins when she was a little girl. I was letting her put the pan into the over and she tipped it over and all the batter dumped out. She ran and hid. I think that’s what spoiled her on cooking. She never had cared for it.

  29. I know I should not be laughing, but I am…that is such a huge mess! Okay, I promise not to laugh again, it’s just when I see a photo like that, it is somehow funny…but I would not have been laughing if it had been me, that’s for sure. And, it so easily could have been me. Love that last photo…everything looks so wonderful, doesn’t it?

  31. I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy a new oven and I think that would have been it:) What a mess! I’m glad it all turned ok in the end. The final result looked yummy.

  33. Oh wow, what a mess! Glad you were able to get it all cleaned up. I used to be the official gravy maker at my brother’s house at the holidays and one time he gave me a glass pot to make it in and the danged thing decided to explode on the stovetop. He didn’t have sealed burners and you talk about a mess!

  35. At least “someone” cleaned up the mess! I think that “someone” should have cheesecake for “his/her” birthday as a remembrance down the road. Hey, that Cranberry Coffeecake looks divine!

  37. Looking at the finished pies and cheesecake I would say you are a baker. Looks delicious. On my second anniversary, I spent hours making the hubby’s favorite lasagna and dropped it on the floor when I took it out of the oven. He just said, “give me a fork.”

  39. Whew what a mess. My most memorable debacle was when I dropped the turkey getting it out out of the oven! I not so calmly picked up the 25 pound slippery escapee and put it on the platter. No gravy of course as it was all over the floor and oven. (yes it was hard to clean)

  41. Note to self: ALWAYS PUT SPRINGFORM PAN ON A COOKIE SHEET BEFORE PUTTING IN OVEN!
Oh Nicole, what a mess, but looks like all got pulled together anyway and your Christmas was wonderful. Especially with the news your daughter shared! Happy New Year!

  43. Oh, Nicole. What a mess. I think I would just leave the scene. I make an eggnog cheesecake for Christmas, but it is no bake and tastes delicious. I’m sure you will not forget this Christmas. In more ways than one. Happy New Year!

  45. I’m actually stunned that you had the presence of mind to take a picture! It looks like one horrible mess. Glad that your wonderful *cleaner-upper-person* had the patience to carefully clean everything up, complete with taking off the oven doors. Thankfully you received such wonderful baby news that evening that all the woes of the afternoon were erased! Looking forward to baby quilt design marathons in 2011.
