In A Dither

Remember Mocha Trails?   I rescued this project from the stash closet, and reminded myself that it deserves finishing.  Mocha Trails is a pattern designed by Denise Sheehan for A Graceful Stitch.

However, my friend Thelma got the idea to make this same quilt pattern using her Maison de Garance fabrics.  That would mean that the blocks would be brown and red.  And maybe some of that caramel tan.  How amazing would that be?

So now I am rethinking the whole color scheme.  The double nine patch block would still be dark brown and cream, but the large rectangles could be red.  And where you see the tan in the star blocks, that could be red as well.  Keep the star points dark brown.  Nice.

Or, wrap your head around this idea.  How about if where you see the tan, I used aqua?  As in this collection by Sweetwater called Pure?

Oh, I do like that idea as well.

Or shall I leave things as is and stay monochromatic?

  1. I really liked the idea of the original color scheme, but I LOVE the idea of using Maison de Garance or substituting the red in! That would be sooooo stunning! Difficult decisions!

  3. I’m a big fan of aqua and red. I wonder how sprinkling in a bit of aqua but using the tan, as well, would look? I’m also a Basic Grey fan…how can you go wrong??? So many choices! Have fun!

  5. I like the brown and red idea. But isn’t that aqua Pure by Sweetwater? That is a very pretty line too. I don’t think you can go wrong any way with those colors and pattern.

  7. I would throw in some color – but for me, I would go with the red – altho that blue is great – one or the other, but definitely some color. I’m not so much a monochromatic sort of gal!

  9. I am all about the color and, as you know, red really does it for me. I don’t know if I could redo the color scheme if I was too far along on a project but if it’s still in it’s early stages I would throw myself at it, ESPECIALLY if it makes an old project new and gives you the motivation to call it done.
Good luck on giving the project new life!

  11. I love monochromatic quilts. Have you made one? If not, I’d stick with the original plan. If you have, I love the aqua!

  13. I think you need to feel committed to the brown monochromatic quilts before they succeed. Evelyn Sloppy has one in her 40 Fabulous Quilts called Mocha Madness. Sadly, I have passed that one by because I prefer the quilts I see with a POP of red. I think your idea of a little red might bring you monochromatic quilt more to your “feel. The aqua?? Love aquas with brown and tan, but I think of the red as a “spark” for what you have already done. Good Luck Nicole.
P.S Your Halloween photos were fun, again.

  15. I’d go with Maison de Garance fabrics. I’ve been thinking about making a quilt with those fabrics. Love the red in there.
Although Pure by Sweetwater is a favorite also. So many choices and you can’t go wrong with either!

  17. I just did a fairly monochromatic quilt, which is not my usual style.I really like it for a change. Maybe stick with that, and choose another quilt to do those beautiful color combos with. Any of it will be beautiful.

  19. I think you cannot go wrong with whatever choice you make. All will make a lovely quilt and it matters only what look you want the most.
Hope if you don’t use the great star blocks you’ve already made you’ll turn them into a wall hanging or a table runner.
Enjoy the imaginative choices you have!
    Hugs!

  21. Why only make one Mocha Trails? It would be beautiful in all three combinations:) The more the merrier!

  25. The red and brown would be great, I think. You can use the blocks you’ve already sewn in a pieced backing. I’m judging the color scheme by other quilts that you’ve shown on your blog.

  27. At least you started yours – LOL! I keep looking at my piles of browns and tans and creams collected just for this quilt. I WILL get to it! I would have never thought it, but Aqua – wow! I think it would be fabulous now that you mention it! That Pure is beautiful!
