According to what I read on the Internet, the official Autumnal Equinox is tomorrow, but it feels like fall today. I got the binding on my little Roundabout Schnibbles, and it adds a rather festive accent to the kitchen table. See that bowl in the center? That came all the way from Ireland. My son's girl friend carried it every step of her journey the first time she came to California to visit us. This time she came out, she brought me a silver bracelet, which she laughingly said was far easier to manage.
I finished my stunt sewing project and got it into the hands of my amazing quilter, Debbie from Prairiequeens. Now that I have ticked that off the TO DO list, I have been working on getting my projects ready for the three (yes THREE) classes I am taking with Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Company in Illinois this coming weekend. Tuesday I finished 100 four patch units for one of the projects. I feel compelled to get as much prep work done in advance to for two reasons—1) it reduces the bulk of what I have to pack into my suitcase, and 2) it makes more efficient use of my class time.
Have you ever gone to a quilting class or retreat and had some poor slob in the group be completely unprepared? They spend the first hour picking out fabrics and the next hour cutting, while everyone else is ready to jump in and start sewing. I don't want to be that woman.
I bet you are wondering what I am going to be sewing on while in Illinois at these three quilting classes. Well, I am carrying my Singer Featherweight from 1947 with me on the plane! My sister Kate travels with her Featherweight often and says she never has any issues with airport security. One TSA agent had to ask her what the heck it was, but other than that, she breezes right though.
My machine had not been serviced in some time, so I took it in to a Sewing Center in San Jose for a tune up. Can you imagine schlepping that thing two thousand miles to use in a Miss Rosie class only to have some dumb mechanical issues? I got my machine back, all clean and shiny, quiet and even stitching. But, wait. WTH? What is that that THING stuck to the front of my antique sewing machine?
OMG. Someone slapped a *sticker* on my sewing machine. Now, I don't mean to be unreasonably cranky, but don't you think they might have asked me first if I wanted that tacky sticker on my vintage equipment? I absolutely, definitely would have said "NO!" So, if you ever go to Ray's Sewing Center in San Jose, California, be sure and state your preference in advance regarding the whole sticker thing. Honestly, what nerve.
Oh, here is a link you all have got to check out, speaking of outrages. Just read what happened to Tula Pink, one of my favorite fabric designers. If you design fabric, I doubt it could get much worse than this.

That sticker on such a beautiful machine is akin to a ‘tramp stamp’ for cryin’ out loud and I don’t mean you’re a tramp either. You know what I mean. Gee wiz! I think I’d be a bit pissed off I do believe.

the table topper looks great for fall. And the sticker could have been put on the bottom of the machine.

Read this blog post to see a horrible quilting story regarding crossing the US/Canada border with your quilts: http://daphnegreig.blogspot.com/2010/05/quilt-market-report.html Hope it’s o.k. to refer to this post, but I think it’s worth alerting quilters. Lori

Goo-Gone will help take it off without scratching it! Just be patient when you’re doing it. I’ve had the same thing happen and it’s maddening! Don’t “they” know these are our “babies”? ~Vicki

I love Roundabout in Fall colors!!! I must make mine again…I didn’t like my fabric choice the first time. I hope you ripped that sticker off there, stuck to some paper and mailed it to him with a clear message on defacing antique machines! Give Miss Carrie hugs from all of us :)..I’m so jealous! LOLOL!

Love your autumn Schnibbles quilt!! Applause!!!
Applause for your industry in getting all this sewing done for the secret project and for your classes!
I’m with Shelley in suggesting you remove the stickers that was placed on your sewing machine and mail it back to Ray. Grrrrrrrrr!
Oh, dear! The theft of the Tula Pink designs is awful and I wish Moda would file a suit. Surely Moda has deep pockets.
The story of having to write Sample on quilt is AWFUL! That border agent should be fired immediately. Talk about pinheaded and that’s being kind.
Make a list and check it twice before closing your suitcases!!
Happy trails to you! Hugs!

The kitchen table looks so festive! How nice to see the bowl every time you pass it and know what thoughtfulness there is behind it.
A sticker on your featherweight?! Are they retards? LOL

I love the fall Schnibbles roundabout. The leaves on the mountains here are beginning to turn, and it is my favorite time of year.
It looks like you are well prepared for your retreat. Do you put your sewing machine under your plane seat, or in the overhead compartment? Hard or soft case?
Have fun!

I’m ready for fall decorating, love your table topper. You lucky girl to have 3 full days of classes with Carrie. The bowl has a good story behind it.

I can’t believe he thought it was OK to put a sticker on your featherweight! The nerve! Can you tell us what you have on the bed of the machine? Is it a piecing guide?

Golly gee, maybe *I* will be the poor, unprepared slob at our classes! I hope not.

Goo Gone! That’s the answer to the sticker on your Featherweight. Love your autumn schnibble. Autumns arrives today, I forget what time. Tomorrow is the first FULL day of autumn. But the equinox occurs today.
Happy Autumn, Nicole.

Love the Schnibbles — those fabrics look wonderful. HATE the tramp stamp. How dare they! Underneath the machine, maybe, but on the front? Someone at Rays needs a serious education in sewing machine etiquette.

Your Roundabout is gorgeous! Lovely bowl, too. I remember that story 🙂
That is a great deal of prep work! I can already tell you will be the star student, Nicole!
I read Tula Pink’s post just last night. Un-be-lievable! I hope she does post the manufacturer’s name and gets Wal-Mart to stop selling it. Sick, sick, sick.

Ugh. They put a sticker on the machine? Honestly! I would have been so upset! Like most suggested Goo Gone will remove the unsightly thing but it’s the principal of the matter. It’s not like the machine isn’t obviously an antique!
I love how prepared you are for the class. I wish more people were like you. The last class I took was a scrap piecing class (I have a control issue and take as many scrap quilt classes that I can). The lady next to me brought a suitcase full of fabric but could not find a ‘light’ value among the bunch. I ended up giving her some of my scraps to get her going (I took a small picnic basket with scrappy FQs). I don’t think I have ever sewn my blocks together before getting to the class but I usually cut my fabric before I get there.
I just read that post about passing the quilts through customs and was floored! Can you imagine being forced to write on your quilts! I think I would be sick. I wonder what Da Vinci would have said if forced to write “Sample” over his Mona Lisa.
Anyway. Did you pack your Camera? Some of us need to live vicariously through your posts, so take alot of pictures! LOL!

Regarding the sticker – I would recommend UnDu. Scrapbookers love it. It temporarily neutralizes the adhesive so the sticker just lifts right off (you can even remove duct tape from tissue paper). And it’s archival safe – no worries about your Featherweight (just stay clear of the gold embossing). Let the UnDu do the work, do not pry – just lift.
